I like how they start off the release with...Hey, the iPhone is great, and oh, by the way, OS X is delayed.

And, let's make sure there are no hypocrites here. Everyone that have MS crap about Vista being delayed should now do the same for Apple.

Or, let's here the complaining about how the Mac is being abandoned.

Hypocrites? Apple has delayed Leopard 4 months, Microsoft delayed Vista over 3 years. No hypocrites here.

Ah but the delay is to help make it NOT the next Newton. All new products have risk and Apple is doing the right thing to reduce that risk and give the product the best chance at a good start.

I agree... they should hire more people if they plan on diverging from their core abilities to develop the other stuff and reduce the risk. But a company should not divert resources from their core development.

No. No. I don't believe it.

My Santa Rosa MBP won't come with Leopard???
They'd better not delay that too...

Ah well. One more reason to join ADC. Maybe Apple will send me a copy of Leopard in October?

Grrrr this move has annoyed me so much. iPhone won't even become availible to international customers for ages let alone next year in Australia!

This sounds all about me, but I never cared for a dumb phone that does everything in 2.5g. I hope it fails.

*annoyed*

Wow Apple plans to expand the Apple name but doesn't want to hire enough developers!

Wow.. we will be on 10.4.9 revision for 6 months! Lol..

Hmm, I can see both sides as a new Mac user.

I can see why people would think they are neglecting the Mac based on this but the PR mess that would happen if the iPhone was delayed would be huge. The wow factor for the iPhone is huge, and if they were to delay it to October.. that sorta goes away.

This just makes it easier for me to wait for the iMac redesign.

Yup. I knew they were working hard on the iPhone and wanted to make it amazing but I didnt think they'd go as far as taking resources away from the development of Leopard to get the iPhone out and then delaying OS 10.5 in the process. Grrrr!

Bah, I'm a student and wanted to buy macbook with Leopard. No money to buy Leopard when it is going to be released later...

Probably. No reason to hold back new hardware just because of an OS. Tiger still works fine, and will work fine even after Leopard is released. And besides, now that the release date has been announced, doesn't Apple usually offer a free OS upgrade to those who buy new hardware now?

Nah, i think they'll honor the discount or free upgrade only after the official street date has been announced.

"Leopard being released October 32nd"

They are hiring lots of folks. Apple's engineering group has grown a lot over the last few years... however no matter how hard you try sometimes you can't grow fast enough and you can't clone key individuals.

I know I work at a company who is growing VERY rapidly and we are having a hard time finding qualified software engineers, etc. The US is starved of engineers.

You obvious don't follow Apple very closely...

Can't read this whole thread, but my thoughts were: if Steve Jobs was dead I'd say he must be spinning in his grave. Fact is, he's still at the helm.

I guarantee you if it was announced now that Steve Jobs were dead, after the initial posts sounding sympathy and shock, someone would ask "What does this mean to the Leopard release? Are we going to see it before Christmas?"

I'm disappointed, but it means the money for my iMac stays in my account longer and earns me more interest. The £1200 I put aside from last months annual bonus payment should earn me about will earn me a decent amount. My MBP will still be in warranty by Leopard's release, so I should still be using this machine then.

I might have even changed jobs by then and might be earning more, so could afford more. If anyone in the UK has a journalism position available, preferably technical based, I'd certainly be interested and that'll help my iMac funds greatly too.

integrity intact

First of all let me say I'm afraid I haven't found the time to read 440 comments before posting. I apologise if others have already said what I'm about to say -- I'd be surprised if they hadn't.

It strikes me that it is a good thng that Apple is not happy releasing substandard products. I'm sure we can all think of multiple cases of companies rushing premature products and services to market, driven by motives other than quality.

Despite the overwhelming 'negative' votes for this post I voted positive. I know it is disappointing but I don't think it's overwhelmingly negative.

On a side note: where are the new Mac minis?

But hey it will be Spring in Australia right, see the Steve did not lie. Now when does spring start down there? (that's a rhetorical question BTW)

I'll be waiting to replace my PowerBook until Leopard comes out. Do you know how much revenue my delayed purchase will cost you, Mr. Jobs? A lot, I tell you, a helluva lot!

As for the justification. Bullcrap. Apple has been working on the iPhone for years. This is simply Apple arrogance. they don't want to admit they are hitting snags.

My thoughts too. I really, really doubt Leopards delay has anything to do with the iPhone. They basically used a Leopard delay cos of issues in development of Leopard to keep the iPhone media fire burning with a big ad for the iPhone; on top of an OS delay announcement. This might be good overall but it's sure to p*** a lot of people off who: have no intention of getting the iPhone, think Apple is slowly turning into a gadgets company etc, and they like Apple mainly for the Mac / OS.

Bastards! Sorry its the only word for it and how I feel.

There goes my birthday present as well (Birthday in July) :(

Actually it likely would have been cleaner PR wise to just say Leopard was being delayed to give more time for developer testing, etc. then involve the iPhone in the statement... In other words it is more likely that Apple is being honest then not.

Thats funny the thread about 2 threads below this one says "Leopard on track for spring 2007"

Yea, where they holding back hardware releases because they thought leopard would be ready? Maybe we will see a bunch of hardware released in the next month or two. mac minis, imacs and MBPs are all about due.

True, the US has sadly not been creating software engineers nearly as much as they should be. I didn't know they were growing so rapidly. I was talking with an Apple engineer in Malta (for a Bluetooth interop conference) and it was good to see the advances to the core OS he showed me.

Hopefully the Bush admin will be gone soon and we can all smarten up.

How do people rate this as a positive thing? Common people, overall how could this be positive. This iPhone thing is driving me insane. I'm am well over the initial hype. It sure seems like apple hasn't done anything for a while. It seems like they stopped all production and productivity over a phone. How many people does it take to build an iphone? Everyone at apple? It seems as though apple has changed its focus from computers to iTunes, iPod and the iPhone. I am sick of all the advertisements about how apple got another contract to sell _______ movies. So whats the good news so far for apple this year? No DRM (oh wait thats in May), the iPhone back in January (but not until June), Leopard spring 07 (oh wait thats not until october). Here is an idea for apple, release a product, don't show it or talk about it being released in the future. Not good, not good at all!!!!

This person is wise and tells the truth!

Personally this is the worst news I've heard so far.

I don't give a rats ass about the iPhone, and pulling developers from an operating system that A LOT of people are eagerly waiting for and holding on to for their upcomming hardware purchase, to work on a phone.
Give me a break. </3
