I'm not sure beyond these processors what Apple can change on their machines.
The new chip-sets will better support the Core 2 Duo mobile processors. They will allow more memory to be installed. The have the option for a much more powerful integrated graphics system (used by Mac Mini and Mac Book). Systems using the new mobile chipsets will be a nice update from existing versions (note iMac uses the same mobile chipset).

With that said the nothing revolutionary but still nice.

Also Apple may be able to reduce prices given processor price drops that are coming.

Can you back that up? Or, is it just venting?

You may be right, they may not have always known, but I would bet that they've known ever since that Digitimes report came out saying it was delayed until Oct and they DENIED it. Give me a ****ing break. They could have just came clean then, but instead they LIED to us.

Now that was a vent.

I still love :apple: though. :D

Actually it likely would have been cleaner PR wise to just say Leopard was being delayed to give more time for developer testing, etc. then involve the iPhone in the statement... In other words it is more likely that Apple is being honest then not.

OR, they can't think straight. :D

I just think it's very Apple to meld things together like this.

I'm not sure beyond these processors what Apple can change on their machines. Perhaps an extra USB port on all portable models? Improved graphics on the MBP?
Intel's about to drop a whole slew of new processors and chipsets onto the market starting in May. They are updating chipsets across all three lines and CPUs in at least two (notebook and desktop). There are important improvements across the board that have been reported on ad nauseam around the Internet.

I'm not sure beyond these processors what Apple can change on their machines. Perhaps an extra USB port on all portable models? Improved graphics on the MBP? Card reader? More memory, (unlikely for lower models to differentiate from higher end and for higher end too expensive)? Bigger Hard Drives? Better resolutions, (especially iMacs)? iWork 06 as standard? HSDPA?

Even typing these have been a struggle so far. Realistically, I have been thinking about what similar priced machines have and suggested that's what Apple should update, but if Apple don't update those, there's very little they can do between now and October.

Flash storage and LED backlights :)

We don't know that and we don't know how significant of a change it would be to replace the threading model in Tiger. It might be trivial, it might not be.
It isn't trivial but they can take a baby step on Tiger that would improve efficiency on system with a high core count. It is in the realm of being feasible. Personally however I bet it will wait till Leopard.

Either way I believe the exact same people who could do that are the exact people working frantically to get Leopard complete so a fix that only helps one machine for certain applications shouldn't be taken as a given.
Actually I doubt kernel level folks (at least scheduler folks) are the key personnel being asked to work on the iPhone. It is more likely it is Cocoa framework, etc. folks.

Let it be known now that I am an Apple enthusiast—not an Apple apologist.

Apple's hubris has again come back to bite it in the bum. The hubris of the Mac/PC ads, the hypocrisy of the ads that smashed Intel and then the ad showing how wonderful Intel was now that it's in a Mac, and now all the digs at Vista only to delay Leopard.

Even in their press release, they said they're sure they made the right decision! More hubris! It was mismanagement pure and simple. As a company grows you add infrastructure and employees! You don't pull people off a project you KNOW is going to sell (how could a Mac OS upgrade not be a good seller?)!

It's time to hold Apple's feet to the fire!

What fantasy world is Apple living in that we would understand their mismanagement as being some sort of genius "balance"? Good Lord!

My dad was just asking me about Leopard today and I assured him it was coming out in June. I even said something like they must be working awfully hard since it's still so buggy! Instead they were apparently working on a still non-existent phone!

Apple better stop making claims of being holier than thou until they get back on track! I say they pull all the Mac/PC ads because until they get this news out of the media the Mac/PC ads are only going to make Apple look like the weak whiny kid trying to deflect criticism.

And, let's make sure there are no hypocrites here. Everyone that have MS crap about Vista being delayed should now do the same for Apple.

Right. Because there is no difference at all between a few months and several YEARS.

This is actually fantastic news, because now we'll get 10.4.10 and beyond...my guess is that the last version will be 10.4.12. AND THEN THE IDIOTS WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS SIMPLE VERSIONING SYSTEM WILL HAVE TO FINALLY SHUT UP! Yay!

I'm sure that someone else has said it by now but the Tiger that everyone is using on their Intel iMacs couldn't have been that easy to do.
Yes, they still said Spring but the fact that they shipped out a fully functioning model for a whole new line of PCs is pretty good.

I'm still very upset of course because now I want to wait until Penryn!

boooo!

I was looking forward to upgrading too. Ah well! I hope the delay adds more features or improves it in any way other than it being just a blank delay.

In other news my pops ordering the first Mac for the house tomorrow :D the switch has begun.

i vote that we start a campaign for mac owners to boycott the iphone so that apple gets back on the ball with its computers.

:D i'm kind of joking... but not really

For those of us with Apple stock, it's gonna be murder on our portfolios.

Those with one or two shares won't be hurt, but with my several hundred it's not gonna be pretty. :(

Aaaaaggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!

I've been bashed before for slipping up and calling Apple "MAC.":apple:... my bad...

But perhaps a good PR move is for Apple to split-up thier divisions and call their computer division "MAC." :)

Perhaps all the news and posts about the iphone, ipod, and Apple TV should go into a separate place, so we don't have to see it anymore. Hey, call it "AppleRumors." ;) This is still MACRUMORS, correct?

Hey Apple, why not give everybody a free upgrade to OS X 10.5 if they buy the iphone?:D

Here are my thoughts

Everyone is feeling disappointed, that was to be expected, but what you have to remember is that Apple didn't think it was ready due to borrowing devs for the iPhone. Yes, they could of hired more people and such but what you forget is Apple may have the money to do so but maybe they were thinking that instead of hiring more people, they could do one of two things. Keep the money and instead, delay leopard giving them more time to make the system as stable as possible, or, keep the money to use it on something "more worth while" then time, such as research into product updates etc.

Now, most of you have Macs with Tiger, Tiger is an amazing operating system and shouldn't be knocked over for a future release. For now, it is the present that is important and I am sure Tiger does what it was designed to do right? So, all you are really is disappointed and as I said that is to be expected but just enjoy your Mac while you wait and get on with life :). Remember, people like myself do not yet have Macs who wish to purchase one. This does come as a blow because as with everyone people want the most "bang for their buck". And, in this case that would of been saving money on Leopard/New hardware.

For those people like myself you have a few choices. You can wait until the Leopard release. Buy a Mac now and enjoy it with Tiger and buy Leopard in October. Wait for new hardware to be released (shouldn't be too long, maybe before Leopard). Or, get a (new) PC-Which is maybe the craziest option but still and option.

So what I am saying is, Apple isn't ready to launch Leopard and atleast they told us now then say, a week before WWDC.

So just take a deep breath, go grab a drink and make a movie, listen to music, write up that report or do something else. It isn't worth complaining and bitching about it :). What has happened, happened and no amount of complaining will change it.

I am sure Apple has a plan and I am sure it is what they feel the best route. At the end of the day it is an OS, it may make your life easier but remember life is too short :).

Please Somebody is it worth it.

I'm a PC user and was about to buy my first Mac. The New OSX has been delayed again and to be honest I'm losing interest. As much as I hate Vista it's here and now!!! Apple Inc. seems to have lost interest in there Computers also. The Suspense is gone now I'm just mad. I mean First appletv, Then iPhone, Next ibegone! Someone please talk me into staying the course.
