Apple Delays Leopard Release

Yea, where they holding back hardware releases because they thought leopard would be ready? Maybe we will see a bunch of hardware released in the next month or two. mac minis, imacs and MBPs are all about due.

No they primarily have been waiting for new chipsets and improved processors from Intel. Those are about to be released by Intel.

Anything that CAN be said HAD been said in 20 pages... but scraping for some kind of silver lining, maybe Apple, PR-savvy as they are, have timed this announcement as carefully as any other. Maybe this bad news means something good is coming soon to distract us :)

(Subnotebook please!)

Kinda weak. I wanted to get a new laptop before I start grad school. I still have to buy one, but now I have to upgrade and BUY 10.5 instead of 10.5 being pre-installed.

Now that I think about it, I really hope Apple stops holding back product releases because of Leopard. I want this tuesday to be HD Mac Pros, next tuesday to be new Mac Minis, tuesday after that to be new iPods, you get the picture.

If you are gonna delay leopard, at least push the product releases forward.

Original post:
1. I guess I will not be buying that new MBP any time soon
2. Proves that Apple is becoming more of CE company than computer company
3. Time to short Apple stock
4. I don't believe iPhone will be a major success in the first few incarnations
5. Proves Apple is not really that much better than Microsoft in terms of project/resource scheduling (OK it's not 2 yr delay but it's a delay)
6. Makes me look at those Apple Mac/PC ads even more unfavourably

Reply:

1. Why? Today or tomorrow's MBP will run 10.4.9 and Leopard, and are better than what you have now if you were considering an upgrade.
2. Really? The Mac is a key part of Apple's digital hub strategy and half their revenue. Trust me, Apple has an interest in growing HALF of their entire revenue.
3. Time to buy Apple's stock at a sub-$90 value. You should have shorted it BEFORE this news. That's how it works.
4. You don't believe the most hyped Apple product in the history of the company will meet their 1% market share predictions? You should do your market research.
5. You're ironically comparing apples to oranges here (or Microsofts). Vista was delayed for YEARS. This is delayed a few months because Apple believes in quality.
6. I'm sorry for your loss.

Clarification:

  1. I was hoping to save $150 for Leopard upgrade, I like Apple better but equation changed from $500 more this spring (compared to a nice Linux laptop) to $ 650 more and Octobar (if then).
  2. iPhone is obviously a higher priority than Macs. When was the last major update of the product line?
  3. Shorting the stock was a cynical joke. However, I still think that even at $ 90 it's overpriced as many other companies at the moment
  4. Compared to what's there already, locked and overpriced iPhone is not in my plans and believe me I purchased very expensive phones before
  5. I said it's not years delay but it's still delay. But will it be October or even later?
  6. Me too, really. I like Apple, using Mac for 4 years now and iPod for 5. But somehow I have this feeling that Apple is more hype than substance in the last year or so.

But Apple can now even compare delays in the next pc vs. Mac ad campain. PC: 4 years, Mac 4 months.
This 4 years vs. 4 months comparison is misleading. Microsoft never announced a 4 year delay, it kept creeping. Apple so far has announced a 4 month delay for an operating system they will have anounced in August of 2006. It will be a year and several months after original announce. Sounds like Microsoft vaporware to me.

crap. this is horrible news. i really don't care about the stupid phone - i sort of hope it flops so that apple gets focused on computers again.

i've been a mac owner for a few months, and overall i've liked the experience. this whole 'delay' thing is why i left windows machines... maybe it wasn't worth the switch.

I may be a bit disappointed with the delay but I understand how it is necessary. However, maybe an apology just to make us feel better is in order (just kidding of course). In actuality, they should really say what the secret features are before June's WWDC, it would be nice of them considering the delay

So much for the whole "The first thirty years were just the beginning." Well I guess the beginning and the end. I was really planning on getting a Macbook with Leopard for college. Looks like I am going to be dissiapointed. This really sucks. It sucks even more because the iPhone to me, even though it is cool, shouldn't hinder the progress of the companies main focus, or what we thought to be their main focus.

The new schedule

OK, so the schedule will be that they announce Leopard's secret features at WWDC and give everybody a beta copy including the secret features that people will be happy to find is very usable indeed. They just needed some final fixes and QA testing. They will also show the final iPhone at WWDC and start taking orders immediately for delivery in late June. Leopard will be released in September. They could have delayed it 2 months instead of 3 but wanted to be conservative because the iPhone will get some nice tweaks and updates very soon after release, those updates coming to all phones automatically over the air for free of course.

no

i refuse to believe this....

i was going to buy a 17-inch MBP the day leopard came out....

longest 6 months of my life...

No they primarily have been waiting for new chipsets and improved processors from Intel. Those are about to be released by Intel.

I'm not sure beyond these processors what Apple can change on their machines. Perhaps an extra USB port on all portable models? Improved graphics on the MBP? Card reader? More memory, (unlikely for lower models to differentiate from higher end and for higher end too expensive)? Bigger Hard Drives? Better resolutions, (especially iMacs)? iWork 06 as standard? HSDPA?

Even typing these have been a struggle so far. Realistically, I have been thinking about what similar priced machines have and suggested that's what Apple should update, but if Apple don't update those, there's very little they can do between now and October.

How about a glad I didnt wait post

I bought my MBP in february and was thinking about waiting until leopard was released. then there was talk of a march/april release. Now im sure glad i didnt wait because these two months with my MBP have been special:)

I too am disappointed. I'm not really looking forward to the iphone, and i need a new apple product to keep me wanting more, more, more. So hopefully they come out with something cool (besides the iphone) to hold me over until leopard. I guess maybe ill have to start saving money for an even newer laptop by then and somehow talk my girlfriend into believing it is worthwhile to spend another $2500 on a laptop in another year.

I think apple has given me blue balls.

********

This is whitewash. Leopard was never ready for a june release. they know. iphone will be the greatest scapegoat.

be upfront with your fans and skip the ********.

Bah, I'm a student and wanted to buy macbook with Leopard. No money to buy Leopard when it is going to be released later...

You are thinking of MS products. The max retail price will likely be around $129.00. Not sure what the student discount is, but it is not insignificant. I pay $199 for 5 Macs. That is < $40 each. I cannot fill my gas tank for that.

I think Apple will be able to turn this highly negative news around.
They are Apple, after all. They will probably lure us with a few new or updated products , both soft and hardware, if not before, it will be at WWDC.
Then when Leopard is finally released, all will be forgiven, as it will be one of the most important OSX releases in Apple's history. This will be the one, that has to prove once and for all that it is miles ahead of MS, and has the potential to gain Apple so many more customers. (especially with the link to the iPhone and iPod).
I stand by my signature, as I'd rather not wait, but if it means I get something even better and matured in return, I'll have peace with it.

True, the US has sadly not been creating software engineers nearly as much as they should be. I didn't know they were growing so rapidly. I was talking with an Apple engineer in Malta (for a Bluetooth interop conference) and it was good to see the advances to the core OS he showed me.
As an additional point this year the pool of available H-1B Visas was consumed in a single DAY. Last year I believe it took around 3 months and think this years pool was larger. That shows how desperate companies in the US are for engineers.

I remember laughing at the Vista delay jokes being made at wwdc last year, all of a sudden they don't seem so funny.

What is funny is when people say they are jumping ship and buying a Dell or something over this, Tiger is great. I just hope they aren't going to be holding off any planned hardware changes as a result of this delay, a 12" notebook would fit in real nice.

I was very careful to say 10.4.9.x, therefore we can expect YA update.
We don't know that and we don't know how significant of a change it would be to replace the threading model in Tiger. It might be trivial, it might not be. We don't know what kind of corners were cut in Tiger since I think almost everyone expected Leopard would be out before the quad core CPUs arrived (this is a case where Apple's later than normal and Intel's earlier than expected). Either way I believe the exact same people who could do that are the exact people working frantically to get Leopard complete so a fix that only helps one machine for certain applications shouldn't be taken as a given.

This 4 years vs. 4 months comparison is misleading. Microsoft never announced a 4 year delay, it keep creaping.
First scheduled to ship in 2003, it was delayed several times in creeping intervals until 2004, when it was delayed to "end of 2006" with two-thirds of the major new features removed. It was then delayed to 2007, rescheduled back to 2006, and finally released in early 2007 to consumers.

Leopard was scheduled to ship by June 2007. It will now be shipping in October.

When Apple announces a two-year delay and then announces that it's gutting the OS entirely to meet that deadline (and then fails to accomplish even that), then we can talk vaporware.

Can you back that up? Or, is it just venting?
