OS delayed

it may be disappointing but it's not life threatening! Yes we want something new to play with, complain and brag about but... hey!! nothing wrong for the next 6 months with the present OS. Give us PhotoShop, Dreamweaver and a few other Intel/mac based programs and we will get by.

Don't worry.. be Happy! it could be worth... you could be dying.

.The stupidest thing about this is that Jobs should just make things right, and let us know when we can expect hardware updates.

I'm beginning to fear that they will delay Santa Rosa, etc., until September 2007 too???

To hell with waiting until October! As much of a bummer as Leopard's delay is, I think I'll be buying a computer this June anyway (Mac or PC).

Mac upgrades? I think for sure. Apple simply must upgrade all consumer Macs well before September/October. Not to do so would bring Mac sales down to a virtual trickle. Apple won't allow that to happen.

i really would like upgrades to the mac pro such as blue ray drives slower models of the 8 core models graphic cards HD etc. by WWDC

Why do you think we are going to see anything at WWDC? Because Apple said so?
Why do you think Leopard is coming out in October? Because Apple said so?
Oh.. i see. They REALLY REALLY mean it this time.
+1 for blowing things out of proportion :D

Apple is no longer a computer company

Hmm. Apple removes the word computer from their corporate name and they become like Microsoft. They too can't deliver a revision to the operating system on-time. The company is falling in love with gadgets which bring high profit margins. The scenario........ Leopard...Deny iPhone...Allow
computers....Deny Apple TV....Deny...oops...no allow a little late.

Big Stuff

Yeah...you posted the same post a page ago....please don't bump up the type just to get noticed. Your opinion is no more important that anyone else's...no reason it should be 3 times bigger.

We're all busying being on the/over the edge and venting now...so you're post might not get a direct reply to it...but you'll have until June to raise your opinions. Just don't expect many comments here...this is the anger thread.

LOL of all of the OS delay Apple has suffered from this is one of the smallest delays... I guess folks have selective memories.

First scheduled to ship in 2003, it was delayed several times in creeping intervals until 2004, when it was delayed to "end of 2006" with two-thirds of the major new features removed. It was then delayed to 2007, rescheduled back to 2006, and finally released in early 2007 to consumers.

Leopard was scheduled to ship by June 2007. It will now be shipping in October.

When Apple announces a two-year delay and then announces that it's gutting the OS entirely to meet that deadline (and then fails to accomplish even that), then we can talk vaporware.

An Apple Announcement:
Meet OS X Leopard (sorry, we had to cut features)
Features cut:
  1. Sound support - use your iPod if you want to play music
  2. Video playback - see #1
  3. Firewall - no one wants to make viruses for Mac anyway
  4. CD-Burning - burn DVDs instead
  5. DVD burning - oops.
  6. Aqua - command line is so much better anyway

On a side note, it will support CoreAnimation. Letters and numbers will zoom across your command-line display like never before! HTML <blink> tags will show up better than ever before (in the new build-in browser Safari Lynx, successor to Safari RSS)

Actually - if the announcement made today about the delayed OS was written by a great writer (the writer of Steve's speeches - who might be Steve himself) then they may have been able to pass it off as "a new feature they absolutely had to add". How would anyone else know it wasn't one of the already present "Top Secret" features?

Great, so for a phone we here in Australia won't even see until mid next year possibly we also have to wait longer for Leopard..

Oh well that's just brought the purchase of my new MBP forward to next month so there is a silver lining :D

Wait, did Apple announce they're abandoning support of all previous versions of Mac OS X and postponing development of Leopard indefinitely or is there just a 4 month delay? Maybe I read the story wrong.
Again, its not the delay, its the clear signals being sent. So far Apple has done nothing to prove otherwise. Signals are:
- Macworld with no mention whatsoever of Mac anything during the keynote. Thats supremely wierd.
- Apple Computer name change to Apple Inc.
- Leopard delayed not because of its own fault, but because Apple announces that the iPhone is more important to release.
- No updates to Mac computers for an extended period of time which is not acceptable in the Intel world.

Last year Apple delivered more than they promised. They released a whole series of products months ahead of the promised time. They delivered products that were powerful for very competitive prices. That generated lots of goodwill and a very good impression for new Apple customers and switchers.

Now they're squandering that reputation at the worst time. Vista launch has provided them a perfect opportunity to take marketshare. Again, my issue isn't with the Leopard delay, that can be understood. Its with the statements which say Apple computers and Mac OS X are not a high priority for Apple.

If Apple were to release updated Mac hardware, I'd stop complaining. That would show Apple still cares about computers. But given this delay, I don't have any expectations of significant updates until well after Santa Rosa, probably in the October timeframe as well. That is simply too long to be competitive.

The new chip-sets will better support the Core 2 Duo mobile processors. They will allow more memory to be installed. The have the option for a much more powerful integrated graphics system (used by Mac Mini and Mac Book). Systems using the new mobile chipsets will be a nice update from existing versions (note iMac uses the same mobile chipset).

With that said the nothing revolutionary but still nice.

Also Apple may be able to reduce prices given processor price drops that are coming.

Intel's about to drop a whole slew of new processors and chipsets onto the market starting in May. They are updating chipsets across all three lines and CPUs in at least two (notebook and desktop). There are important improvements across the board that have been reported on ad nauseam around the Internet.

Flash storage and LED backlights :)

Okay then, how about nothing much beyond processors that wouldn't bump the prices up significantly. I can't see Apple slimming margins, so even if the machine supports more memory, Apple won't add much more without charging more too.

If Apple is quick with upgrading processors after Intel price drops in May I will forgive them :)

I guess if there's no updates to MBP this summer, my money will go to HP.

I absolutely need a new laptop for university and I was planning on getting a brand new MBP. If there's no update, I don't see the point of buying something outdated that will be updated 1-2 months after.

Apple definitely need to get some new consumer PCs updates this summer.

WOW Guys calm down.....

Have we forgotten why we all love to use the Macintosh, other than the cool design. Speaking from the point of a farely recent switcher (1 yr and some months) i have yet to even begin to wrap my brain around Tiger's operating system. Being that i came from a dell using xp only to come back to my dorm one day to see a blue screen of death and losing all my info, the seemless efficiency of running Mac OSX is of the most importance. I feel like i have lived in the dark not using a Macintosh when i started college. Now that i am finish and am not writing papers everyday it will take me that much longer to dig deep into Tiger.

The iphone will sell out the door. Why? Because people buy phones because they look cool. I would guess atleast half the people that buy smart phone regardless of the price tag actually use half its features. Eventually they just buy the next new smartphone and again never use its full potential. I for one only use smart phones. The thought of having a phone seemlessly work with my macintosh is a dream. Smart phones arent that easy to use. If apple's iphone lives up to its image of seemless integration and just "it plain works" they are going to make a dent in the market.

I would rather have a stable operating system that hackers have a hard time with than to have something rushed and come home to a blue screen of death. That would force me to use Linux or something like that, which was the operating system on the 400,000 NMR machine that i couldn't figure out how to use.

I tend to agree with you, the only rub is they made comments about MS doing it. it's a bit, hypocritical, and it's a little hard to defend a company when they do that.
Folks can't separate marketing from reality? Folks need to keep context and relative scale in their heads...
