I think Apple really blew an opportunity to gain market share.

Many people are in the middle of transitioning from XP to Vista. Many are on the fence and wanted to see the latest offering from Apple. They have been with XP for so long they are getting tired of it and MS kept promising this great OS that was constantly delayed.

The ipod, iphone, and appletv hype pulled in inquisitive buyers.

Apple had the opportunity to either beat Vista to market with a new OS, release at about the same time, or slightly after Vista.

Now people are going to read about the delay and think "Oh no, not this again, I'll just get Vista"

Not only that but Apple may wait on hardware updates until Leopard is ready. For instance, the Octo Mac Pro is needs Leopard for better core affinity control. As it is now, in Tiger, the Octo is a waste of money over the quad. Apple might also need Leopard for other hardware to function better as well.

All in all this is bad for Apple. It sends a bad message to users as well. Apple is telling everyone that they have limited resources, can only do one thing at a time, and OS X is not as important a cog, as a cell phone.

Now Vista is already nibbling away at the Mac OS X marketshare and it will continue nibbling away what Apple has so carefully built.

Suuuure it is. Where's the evidence for this? That's the same OS that even Windows users are by and large not much caring for.

I honestly feel the Mac is near death!!

Here's a word for you: histrionics. Let's keep things real, OK?

Know your history, please

OS 10 was YEARS LATE too, with MULTIPLE rewrites.

How is that different to Visa?!!!!

Who's talking about the introduction of OS X? This is about 10.5, specifically, being delayed a few months. Not about the genesis of 10.0.

Honestly, far too many people in this thread really need to smarten up considerably and start posting things that make sense. Either that, or should I be suspecting some paid MS trolls who are latching onto anything they can possibly get their hands on, no matter how weak?

Very well put. Almost like you are reading my XP mind (and many of my friends' XP minds). I was ready for a new computer in Nov. Held off on getting another PC, having been impressed with Apple products and hearing Jobs say that Leopard would be out in Spring. I waited a bit... now I am asked to wait 6 months from today. Forget it.

Apple- you want us to wait? Then come clean. Tell us what we are waiting for. What new hardware, what special features. If it is so insanely great, we will wait.

Lame, just completely and sadly lame

Apple's brand is about not only imagination but integrity -- "Spring" is supposed to mean "Spring" -- the "other guys" are supposed to be the ones who come up short. The Steve Jobs I know would have fired the lame a** who would say "Spring" and didn't deliver. There's $11.87B in the bank and no reason, not a single excuse in the world, not to make both the iPhone and Leopard dates, except lame, lame performance worthy only (previously) of Redmond. First time I have been deeply disappointed in Apple since 1998 and the days of Rhapsody. Steve is giving Michael Spindler a run for his money on this one.

So how many people are still going to wait to buy a new system until Leopard is released?

I don't know anymore... %*(@($ Apple!!!

I have my money saved up, right now, to buy a 20" iMac. I was going to buy it immediately after WWDC (and Leopard's release) or the next iMac refresh. But now I don't know. Should I wait, or should I buy early in the summer and have to pay $70 to upgrade to Leopard (edu. discount).

I don't know.

This really stinks.

The only thing that would be good news to me is if Apple surprised us and released Leopard at WWDC anyways, and 'beat people's expectations.'

BIG

Yep. Well said. I had bought the OS X public beta that was released at Mac Expo in Paris in 2000... which was the ship date announced at MWSF in January 2000. OS X didn't ship until March 2001. It was late. These delays happen.

I personally wish Apple would have copped up to it sooner, but considering there were no reports of "special new features" coming from the developer community, I figured this delay was coming. I can't imagine OS X having "top secret" features that are totally awesome without the developers being able to build them into their products in advance.

And considering we all know how loose-lipped that community is... (thank you very much, developers!)

October isn't too bad. It isn't June, but it's still 2007. As long as 10.5 isn't delayed until January, we're still pretty good. Plus, it'll be 4 years since Panther!

And for all you asking about iLife and iWork - expect them in October along side, unless Apple strips functionality and releases at WWDC, which isn't likely.

-MBG

ps - I too am fearing that Apple is getting away from its roots, for the record. I won't be buying an iPhone. There's no Cingular coverage here and I already have an iPod and I'm very happy with VZW.

My God, how many negative posts from newbies can we get on here in one day? This slight delay announcement sure has really brought the them out in force. I can't recall seeing so much knee jerking overreaction to anything on here in a long time.

In the meantime, at least Macworld has posted an editorial tonight that brings some much needed sanity and common sense to this entire episode.

Yeah, honestly, everybody I know and a lot of the people on these forums seem to be freaking out over silly issues that doesn't make that much of a difference.

That article also made a good point I didn't include: Apple's raising the bar, and others are still trying to reach it.

You know, I am not exactly frothing at the mouth about this delay but fundamentally it does worry me a great deal. No doubt the iPhone is great but you see, I use Macs to make a living. My phone has little to do with me being able to create something and Apple has done so little with the Mac so far this year, software or hardware-wise. I feel a wanning enthusiasm. Where are the Macs!?

Apple stands to make a killing on the iPhone even if it is an untested consumer product. I am sad that Apple picked the mass market over its loyal Mac users. It is going a bit far to make a buck but that is what it is there for.

I did read each of the previous 787 posts in this thread. Everyone really needs to increase their posts displayed per page.

Not that I support this "iPhone first" bull____, but did anyone see 30 Rock tonight? iPhone reference from Tracy Jordan's posse. It really is mainstream already.

Announcing that they're allocating resources from an operating system to a cell phone just adds to the hysteria.

Apple's excecutive team needs to do an interview with Macworld and explain the reasoning behind the delay. Phil Schiller are you listening?

Despite reports, according to Macworld, analysts aren't worried. You know why? Because they see Apple as a consumer electronics company, not a computer company. Something as Mac users, we are going to have to accept sooner or later.

>_<

Bummer... this really makes me sad. For the last few months (actually, more than just a few) I had been hoping to buy a MacBook Pro. I figured, "hey, I'll settle my debt, work towards getting an engagement ring to propose, and give myself my first* shiny new Mac as a reward for actually managing my money right."

I was hoping to wait out for the release of Leopard since I know that the Macs tend to get upgraded hardware as well, and well, now I'm in the boat as the other PC users who have chimed in here. If I wait any longer to buy one, I'll go nuts. If I get one now, I'm sure I'll be unlucky because the new hardware will suddenly be available. Any time I buy parts for my computers something always happens (AMD changing their socket types ALL THE TIME, for example). It's like damned if I wait, and damned if I don't.

Any chance someone could slap some sense into me? As a PC user who would like to finally have the latest and greatest, and be on a Mac for the first time in forever, what should I do? I mean I almost went out and made an impulse purchase on a MacBook Pro! >_<

* - first, non-used Mac that will do what I want it to do; sold my old 12" PowerBook G4 to my friend since he needed a cheapie Mac for testing his sites in Safari.

** Oh yeah, this is my first post! HI!! ^_^

You may be on to something. Maybe that explains the highly disproportionate number of overwhelmingly negative posts from newbies in this thread.

I would have bought an iPhone if it was unlocked and I could my own sim - NO SALE.

I don't care about leopard, but I want full blu-ray support now and a new version of Final Cut/Dvd Studio that will write blu-ray Video discs and a DVDplayer that will play blu-ray discs. 10.4.999 anybody?

Jesus Christ, some of you people are acting like Steve Jobs himself took out a gun and shot 10 puppies on national TV while pissing all over the American flag at the same time.

:D :D :D

First time I LOL'd reading all this hysteria. Being a switcher since december 2005, I'm still very happy to have done so. My MacMini never lets me down. I love her. Don't know about Vista, but XP was &%#@#$&* HELL!!!

What, for an OS upgrade? This makes no sense at all. You were ready for a new computer last November, why in the world would you not get a new computer in November? You would have been happier for all this time. And then you can upgrade to Leopard when it's released. Do people not understand this? Newsflash: You are not stuck with the OS that ships with your computer! Really! You can get an upgrade!

While the delay is unfortunate, it's not the end of the world. Leopard simply needs more bake time. What's the big deal?

That being said, I'd like to address the idea that Leopard is in some kind of trouble or otherwise in worse shape than what is customary for a developer preview of an operating system.

IMHO, that notion simply isn't true. I'm a professional developer on both OS X and Windows, and the truth is that Leopard build 9A377a has actually been more stable for me as a development platform than the SHIPPING version of Windows Vista. Sure there are some annoying issues in end-user stuff, but the foundation is doing quite well, thank you very much!

As for whether or not iPhone really caused the delay, why does it matter? It should be painfully obvious by now that Apple has big plans for convergence. I suggest everyone set their disappointment and their selfishness aside for a moment and think... different! ;)

The reality is that iPhone and Apple TV are helping turn OS X into a device-agnostic platform for the future rather than just another desktop operating system for today. As an AAPL shareholder, I applaud this kind for forward thinking. It may very well be the key to Apple's long-term success.

This was from the OpenGL thread, but maybe this October delay will allow Apple to incorporate the new Long Peak API to be released this summer instead of just OpenGL 2.1. Since Long Peak is a major OpenGL revision, that could be what ThinkSecret meant when they said there will be an overhaul. It'll probably just miss Mount Evans though since that is supposed to be scheduled for an October release as well.

I don't suppose Apple will release any of Leopard's features early by integrating them into a Tiger. Say a full version of Boot Camp.

You may be on to something. Maybe that explains the highly disproportionate number of overwhelmingly negative posts from newbies in this thread.
Or they're all newbies because they've been waiting for Leopard before they make their switch and this prolongs the process, frustrating them even more.

Ha!
I just created a widget counting down 'till 10/31/07 @ 11:59:59 PM, assuming that Apple can take that long to release Leopard.
202 days 00 hours 19 min 20 seconds.
I guess I'll see it every time I F12.
