Yearghhh.

Delaying a major upgrade to their core product for a damned phone? YEARGHHH.

The only thing that'll save Apple from lots of public angst is if they announce those "top-secret" new features immediately and they really kick butt. I don't see it being a major financial problem long-term, but it'll sure hurt them over the next six months.

What, for an OS upgrade? This makes no sense at all. You were ready for a new computer last November, why in the world would you not get a new computer in November? You would have been happier for all this time. And then you can upgrade to Leopard when it's released. Do people not understand this? Newsflash: You are not stuck with the OS that ships with your computer! Really! You can get an upgrade!

Well, the honest answer is that I felt that Leopard was going to be released with new hardware, based on what I hear Apple does. And the new hardware was going to be far superior to what was out there at the time, and take advantage of ALL of Leopard's new features which current hardware might not.
Now, if Apple releases new hardware today, I think I'd bite- since of course, I can always upgrade the OS as you say.

But surely you can see why many potential converts like me are ANGRY because we were given a false date. And maybe, just maybe Apple knew they were not going to deliver, but kept us on the hook. The delay doesn't anger me. The lie does.

Check it yourself. Apple marketshare declined last quarter (last sentence). As in "went down." So he was correct.
That nice for headlines and all but what about number shipped/sold? If Apple's sales increase slower than the rest of the market *gasp*, market share percentage will fall even though they may have been selling well.

Percentages can show trends but they should not be counted on exclusively.

You may be on to something. Maybe that explains the highly disproportionate number of overwhelmingly negative posts from newbies in this thread.

Yeah...I actively resist conspiracy theories, but some of these posts are just too unreal.

Or they're all newbies because they've been waiting for Leopard before they make their switch and this prolongs the process, frustrating them even more.

Right. Can someone explain to me exactly what is so magical about Leopard that you need it to come pre-installed on a computer before you buy a Mac?

Because that's how they do it with Windows.

Great, here we go again.

Save time by installing your programs, copying your data, customizing your computer JUST ONCE.

Make it EASIER for people who want the software but don't want to deal with the hassle (or don't know how to) upgrade.

For us techies, the latter is a bit irrelevant, but I'd sure like to shave off a few hours of my day customizing and installing programs, transferring data and so on and so forth to have to do it again in a few months.

If you're like most of us, you work, study, commute and have a social life, so any wasted hours are in fact, wasted over something that could have been done right since the beginning and just once.

They are probably doing it because they are not selling enough Mac Pro 8 cores. By pushing Leopard, people wont wait until leopard is shipped to by the 8 core like they were. Also they won't have to put the 8 core's prices down until six months later. Man, six months is a long wait

Not that I support this "iPhone first" bull____, but did anyone see 30 Rock tonight? iPhone reference from Tracy Jordan's posse. It really is mainstream already.

I agree that the iPhone is getting mainstream already. I have head on several occasions over the last months college-aged kids talking about the "pod-phone". Let's face it, iPods have likely generated more revenue for Apple over the last 5 years than Macs have over the last 20. It is these innovative products that invoke the curiosity in Apple and draw switchers more than just the computers and their operating system alone.

While I too am upset about the delay in Leopard, getting the iPhone out on time is better for the company. It will draw more switchers late this summer and next fall, just in time for Leopard.

Now that apple has become a full fledged technology company like sony, ehhh, they should start staffing up. they will have alot of products that people will want to see updated constantly: computers, ipods, iphones, apple tv, routers, accessories, whatever.

i can see why they chose to delay leopard and i would personally rather have 1.5.0 in october as a stable system then 1.5.0 in june as really buggy and wait until october for 1.5.2 for the same stability.

all of apples product lines need refreshing badly!!! the only thing that i can hope is that the iphone is a major success, which makes apple billions of dollars. it would be great if they then lowered their hardware prices to be more competitive and not make as much money off computers.

all i really ask is for apple to update the computers already and keep computers as top priority over the phone, or atleast hire a dedicated team to computer development.

i thin that it is sad that the iphone has been in production for so many years, but other companies can make imitation devices from the time they were previewed at macworld with better specs.

i cannot see the currently announced iphone and being a great success with the crappy specs and ridiculous price.

this is just my thought

Negative Newbie

Negative Newbie

Delaying the release because they want to get it right ++ (and very Apple).
Delaying the release because they want to focus on a f’in phone – (and complete BS IMHO).

You do know that Apple has this nice little BUILT-IN migration assistant that pops up when you install Mac OS X or on the first run of a new Mac? This little assistant will automagically transfer your stuff (including all settings) from your old Mac to the new Mac.

I do this all of the time... it works very well and is brain dead simple.

This even works going from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac.

Man,

half of the posts about Leopard are bitching about how it doesn't have enough features, now the other half are about bitching that it's delayed 120 days.

You just can't please them all, now can you?

Oh, the real reason Leopard was delayed was that its hair was "Nappy Headed" and they wanted to comb it out.

Not a good day on the Stock for Apple tomorrow. I would recommend selling it short.

This infuriates me. After this past year from switching from Microsoft to Apple, I am displeased that they began to look like Microsoft with their delays of the Apple-TV, Leopard, iLife, iWork, and the badly needed mac-mini. It seems this is not the year of the Mac, but of the iPhone. We should have been scared when they said they were not Apple Computers, but Apple. I guess the next option is switch to Linux. I really do enjoy Apple's products, but I am displeased with the Microsoftish way of handeling them recently.

Sorry for the rant in advance

Come-on give the guy a break.

Transitioning from Windows to Mac is a major investment. In addition to the hardware there is a re-purchase of any key software as well.

Are you telling me you expect people to switch immediately without waiting to see what Leopard turns out to be prior to purchase.

Vista is out and new. People go to Apple's website and have seen Leopard previews splashed on the OS X tab for about a year.

Of course he would wait. Now he is still waiting. He could be waiting in Nov. or Dec. for MWSF 2008. How can you rule it out?

well, this is definitely bad news for the people who were waiting for leopard to buy a new computer, or for the early adopters that were gonna buy it as soon as it was out.

BUT it's good news for the people who weren't gonna buy it. They get Bootcamp for another while for free. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Thank you for an actual answer. I'd be interested to know where this idea came from though...I don't remember any amazing new hardware being released when 10.4 came out, nor do I remember anything when 10.3 came out either. In fact when I got my Power Mac, the line had been refreshed somewhat recently, and it came loaded with 10.3.5.

The delay doesn't anger me. The lie does.

Fair enough. Perhaps I'm too cynical, but I see companies lying all the time. Apple has a history of denying stuff, then suddenly turning around and confirming it after all. I always base my buying decisions on what's available at the time, not on rumors or even official announcements, because a couple things the computer industry as a whole has taught me are A) you never really know and B) something newer will come out soonish anyway.

The latest build of Bootcamp expires in September, if I remember correctly, so Apple's gonna have to patch that - but that's it.

Yes I'm aware, but it still involves time. Plus some people may not like to use the migration assistant (myself included).

I like to transfer stuff manually to make sure it's done correctly and the way I want it.

Er, what? What? My upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 took 15-20 minutes. I did not re-install any programs. I did not copy any data. I did not re-customize my computer. None of my settings were changed. The only thing that changed was that the OS had some new features as the result of being 10.4 instead of 10.3. Seriously, that's it. I do not understand....
