That doesn't really work for programming teams. It isn't like an assembly line of workers that just screw nuts and bolts all day long...

True a small team of inspired and skilled programmers can do way more than a lot of uninspired ones (MS). But if apple were to begin hiring more now eventually they would have more teams and larger teams to handle the increased work load.

If you hire and train on time it's not a problem. But Apple obviously didn't.

Not the same thing.

As a fair number have already said, Apple should have recruited a load more software engineers to allow both the IPhone and OS X 'Leopard' developments to continue unhindered. Now that's something they can be truly criticised for. Think they dropped the ball on that one! :(
But, keep in mind, although there are many, many developers that can dig through Objective-C documentation at developer.apple.com and write some pretty slick software, it's a whole different world writing the code that makes all of that available to developers. It's like saying "Hire more carpenters to get new, advanced power saws, table saws, routers, nailers, etc... to market on time".

Yeah that's my primary worry too. :(

Bingo! Getting Leopard released quickly after Vista was necessary to grab the market by the... well, you know. By the time it comes out, a huge percentage of people will have already bought Vista and it'll be too late. Ah well.

EXACTLY!!! That's really what upsets me the most, cause i love Apple and now they are really gunna lose a huge opportunity that won't come around again for who knows how many years.

Right, the whole "just hire more people" idea is just so much nonsense to anyone who knows anything about software development, especially OS development.

OK, I can accept that it would take a longtime to train/educate a standard developer to write code for OSes and developer tools. I could also accept that apple would rather not spend the effort to educate them.

But come on, they did drop the ball here - they've been in iPhone development for over 2 years and thats plenty time to find unix OS and developer tools programmers that already exist outside of Apple.

This is ****. I don't want an iPhone - not now, not soon, not ever. I think Apple are massively overestimating the potential of their long-awaited phone if they are prepared to relegate their base of comp. users behind development of this toy.

agreed. as an apple enthusiast, i think it is now my responsibility to NOT get an iphone.

I don't get the hardware complaints from people...

How are the OS and hardware so tied together that it would prevent Apple from implementing Santa Rosa with Tiger?

Thats not the point. The point is that Apple should have put more priority on Leopard, and less on the iPhone. That would be doing the right thing.

I don't believe that makes sense from a business perspective. The iPhone is the next big thing for apple. So many people are waiting for this to come out and the product will generate a big source of income for apple.

but that "next big thing" is really kinda lame. granted, it will have the best cell phone OS. but the specs are outdated for a mid-2007 phone, and apple knows this well.

iirc, OS X is accounts for big part of apple's income as well.

Remember the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley"? The apple programmers wore shirts that said "90hrs a week". Wonder what those shirts say now?

 At least we know where Apple Inc's priorities are. Looks like I got a whole 6 months to give Vista a thorough testing now. I would have instantly gone Leopard but they've slapped alot of people in the face with this iPhone > Leopard rubbish.

This backs up my fears that Apple are seriously neglecting the computer side of their business.

Yep, those are my thoughts too. Apple's computer hardware is really stagnating right now.. look at the Mac Mini for instance.

Their computer business really is a sideline now. A very sad day in my opinion.

Dagnamit !

I'd sold my MacBook on eBay last week (before any further updates are announced) and was getting ready to buy a MacBook Pro...

That's just gone out of out of the window now !

Or mabybe it hasn't and I'll just get a Macbook Pro with 10.4.x... better the devil you know hey ?

Look on the bright side. Now people that were not going to buy Leopard can keep boot camp for 6 months longer without having to pay $30 fee.

Wake up Bro ! Just get used to the fact that Apple is going for a bigger goal than just being a computer company ... the huge opportunity is the iPhone ... the next Generation iPod and so on ... Tiger (or Mac OS X in general) is already where M$ is just starting with ... or do you really think that Apple will be gaining a much bigger portion of the worldwide computer market with just the release of Leopard ?

I didn't care about Vista integration with Boot Camp and I don't care about the iPhone, I am really disappointed about this delay. Geez, Microsuck would have probably released a Service Pack for Vista by October. :D

Great ! I would love if you go VISTA and let us have our iPhone / iPod / Leopard rubbish ... because it sounds like you fit better being a M$ customer ;o)

Well the fact is computers, TVs and Music players are slowly merging into one device. Apple sees this as true and are adjusting their business model to reflect the same. I think its a smart move but not if they need to pull resources from one unit to supplement another.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Apple didn't want to ask us for $130 for Leopard and the $80 for iLife at the same time it was releasing the $600 iPhone, figuring some people will now use that money to buy an iPhone instead.

Not realizing of course that their iPhone > Mac OS thinking is going to piss off a large segment of their loyal base that was looking at the iPhone. The "halo effect" goes both ways, especially when you are looking to sway early adopters so that your product is out there.
