What I think is remarkable about the iPhone X is that its functionality is so determined by software. And because of the fluid nature of software, this product is going to change and evolve. In 12 months' time, this object will be able to do things that it can't now. I think that is extraordinary. I think we will look back on it and see it as a very significant point in terms of the products we have been developing.

Uhm... isn't this exactly what ALL computers do? Is Mr. Ive not familiar with the concept of programming and why a computer is fundamentally different to a fixed device?

Anyone who has used Face ID for more that 5 minutes knows that Touch ID is dead. It's just taking the rest of you time to figure out the the corpse is getting cold.

I actually used FaceID for 3 days, hated it, and returned the X for an 8+. FaceID is slower and doesnt work on side angles (e.g. lying in bed). Maybe FaceID v2 will catch up to TouchID, but for now TouchID is king.

I've always looked at smartphones as a vessel for software. Millions buy iPhones but still use Google services.

Think of the Internet as roads and freeways. Information Super Highway. Think of the Apple ecosystem as your gated community. Smartphones are the cars to get there.

The notch will one day be integrated into the frame itself. Going to be amazing the difference in the next decade..

The iPhone X, Ive says, was designed to serve as a vessel for software, with a design that melds into the background. Apple's design team has always aimed to "get design out of the way." "We try to define a solution that seems so inevitable that it does recede," he said.

This turns my stomach. This is why we have an unnecessarily-reimagined virtually monotone iOS with hidden/buried functions virtually devoid of intuitive UI cues. Yeah, design should be out of the way but we'll painstakingly over-design the one thing humans physically tote around more than the food in their digestive tract to look like a delicate flat glass piece of jewelry with the durability of a lightbulb.

This guy always speaks in riddles. Frustrates me. Tons of fancy words giving the casual reader any substance or direction.

Just like the apps & iOS he's "inspired." No substance of design anymore; just all look-alike-whiteout apps with unintuitive UI cues that often makes figuring out apps into a riddle of their own.

He REALLY phoned in that cover.
*pun not intended

Why should that be a surprise when iPhone apps all share the same blank-page unfinished-uninspired-look from 10 feet? All that's missing is the word "COVER" in Arial Black up top to the left.

I think he has a point, though his nonsensically blowhard manner of speaking hides it. Unlike prior iPhones, the very way you operate the iPhone X can be changed in a more fundamental way. Without a home button, now *everything* is programmable gestures. The little "home indicator" strip can change or be eliminated, gestures can be changed, etc.

Doesn't mean they will be, of course. Just that they can be. I think of how much the apple watch interface has changed since version 1 - my old Generation 0 watch is operated completely differently than when I bought it.

Who are you trying to kid Jony?

In twelve months it'll be in a dumpster, and people will be lined up around the block for the XI, or whatever you call it.

That's how Apple can afford to keep you in T-Shirts.

If it's going to do more software things they should have made it gave the X 4GB-6GB but that would be too much future proofing for Apple to do that.

Question for those that know. Always On display. Since the X has an OLED if Apple wanted to could they in a software update allow an always on display or would that require other hardware?

As far as the notch. It wouldn't surprise me if the notch isn't smaller next year.

i like how he said "12 months from now" like yeah no duh, there will be new technology hardware and software for the iPhone 9 or XI whatever.

It clearly could be done in software. Unlit pixels consume no power, so they could black the screen and display a clock, or a dot indicating new notifications, for example. (This would still consume some power to deal with updating the display, but it's certainly much more practical now that the display is OLED).

I'm more concerned with the potential for glass fragmentation on both the front AND the back of his latest phone design, if it gets accidentally dropped....

Won’t minimizing the notch over time create more problems with screen shape fragmentation in the App Store?

Here let me clear that up for you...

"A singularly defined moment notwithstanding conceptualized integration within boundaries not perceived to be outside designed parameters eventuating into a device the we now call the iPhone X."

Love it or hate it or merely indifferent to it, in the end that notch is so distinctive that it really is a brilliant marketing move. Sitting in the library, hanging out in the doctor's or dentist's waiting room, sitting on the train or the bus, a casual glance at the person seated to you makes it immediately clear that he or she is using Apple's iPhone X -- not an older iPhone, not the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, not a Samsung or Android whatchamacallit, but the shiny new APPLE FLAGSHIP device. BOOM!!! That instant recognition factor is worth a lot, folks.....
