As someone else mentioned, the black edge around the screen is very nice when watching movies in a dimly lit room. You don't see anything but the action.

White keys would be...well.....uh...just plain silly on aluminum.

I don't think anyone is suggesting white on aluminum. Rather, silver on aluminum, i.e. previous MBP.

That's odd. I'm using mine right now.

Beat me to it...

Anyway, I quite like both the new MBP design and the new MB design. The build quality is outstanding, and I find the design quite nice, although I do not dispute that it could use some improvements. The only thing that really stands out at this point is the amount of sidespill on the backlight keyboard, although that's more of a function issue than a design issue. I do find the MB design more pleasing than the MBP design, however both are quite aesthetically pleasing. About the whole glossy bit, the only time I've noticed any real annoyance in the past 2 weeks of taking it to and from school is when I was sitting next to a window on a sunny day. THAT was annoying. It was IMPOSSIBLE to see my screen, all I got was a reflection of the window. Other than that though, the glossy really doesnt interfere that much. Throughout the day I'm usually in decently well lit rooms too. I've found that the immense brightness of the display usually overpowers any reflections that may be on the screen...

PS: I actually didn't really like the silver on silver on silver design of the previous MBP. Way too bland for me...

I really dislike the MBP, but really like the MB, to me the holes either side of the keyboard just don't match up like they used too (on the MBP), however, I've yet to see either machine in real life yet, so shall have to wait and see...

You guys need to research Jonathan Ive's obsession with the Machine age/Streamline 1940's, and the 1960's and 70's Pop and designs.

The new MacBook aluminum/MacBook Air and Pro are direct descendants of the Titanium Powerbook, which itself was an ode to Science Fiction and 1940's Industrial Design.

I don't know if any remember the stir that first year the Titanium came out, but it was and is a thing of design and function beauty. (okay save for the chipping paint and carbon fiber/plastic border cracks, but who knew?) The manner in which the logic board was designed for the case used to be a popular screensaver, it was such a breakthrough in notebook designs.

The black keys are a homage to the typewriter.

As for the iBook, white iPod, iMac g4 etc., it is a tribute to the plastic Eames and Panton and Kartell plastic industrial designs of the pop era.

The aluminum grate looks of the MPro and PMG5 and powerbooks are tribute to German 60's industrial. They even made a radio that looked like these cases.

Ive was knighted for his Apple designs. Consider his Cube, his iMac G3s, his iPod, iPhone, later iMacs, Powerbooks and now new generation lappies.

This man is a design genius. We own something akin to owning something by the best industrial designers of the Modern Machine Age. Other companies trot years behind to copy without infringing on trademark...

That said, where is my firewire workaround for the AlMacBook?

very interesting. Thanks for sharing that :) would you happen to have a link to where I can read up more about this?

i'm interested where the inspiration for the macbook air design comes from.

Hi,

Maybe it is not right to the topic, but is the new MacBook really is aliuminium? I mean the top and bottom of it, couse it don't feel like metal at all.

Maybe I am wrong.

Anyway, I like new MacBook a lot.

Baloney. Nobody has actually seen one yet, and yet some already have a bad opinion. Reminder: we heard the exact same things about the current iMac line. So many people hated it before actually seeing one. How many people complain about the iMac now?

Give it a rest.

The current iMac lacks the grace, simplicity and beauty that defined the white iMac.

There. I said it. Happy now?

Oh yeah, the glass covered screen is a real letdown too, and the black bezel is just dumb design.

Looks familiar?

No offense :) Just happened to browse through these when shopping for my Xmas gift (TV)... to good of a chance to pass by. Truce?

Truce? Sure.

BTW I like the new Macbook. My complaint was with the screen in all Macbooks. New and old. I didn't attack just the new one because of this. I think for the price we pay, Apple should give us all a better screen.

Here are my biggest complaints about the new one. Screen (which I stated why above) and lack of FW (which I personally use a lot for photography/video). I'm going to be forced to buy the Pro when I update next year, but I like the portability/size of the reg. Macbook.

On the looks: I like the looks a lot except for the blacks keys. It isn't a major thing with me because I don't buy a computer based on looks. It is just my personal opinion. No big deal though.

Overall the new one is really nice and Apple did a pretty good job. Hopefully they will put a better screen in it in the future (with the pretty good graphic card they have in it a better screen would complement more) and for us who use FW put that in. If they don't then OK, it is still nice.

Well said, pal.

I think Apple strategically put a cheaper screen in the MacBook line, to differentiate the price point and quality from MBP and MBA.

I don´t think it´s ugly, but I do like the classic MBP better. When closed, the new one looks better than the old.
I really wished they stopped the whole MB/MBP thing now and gave us BTO options instead. (I understand why they don´t though)

I just bought the 2.5 Classic MBP because I need 2 firewire ports and express card slot.
I use my MBP on location to offload HD footage shot on express cards and are making backups to 2 different HDs.

I just find it too big, and I would have loved to be able to get a 13" with the same specs, or at least just one FW port

Who's With Me here? I was exited at the idea of this Aluminum & 9400 G Laptop until i saw the design...
I thought apple made nice looking laptops but to me this is Just plain ugly with the black sided screen and keyboard. Its just plain ugly (Mostly) i tried to like it but yuck...

When I saw the title of this thread, loaded with spelling errors I laughed out loud - then I clicked and now I'm kinda confused...

...your horrible spelling/grammar aside: is their any sane explanation why you - seemingly randomly - capitalize first letters of certain words, even in middle of a sentence but refuse to do it where it should be...?

PS: reason I'm asking is because I'm not a native speaker so I'm curious if there's something I might be missing here...

Yup, I'm completely with you. The Envy blows the current MB/MBP's out of the water designwise. Sad.

haha the envy looks like a slim brick with a high gloss paint job, come on now if apple kept everything aluminum again it would look the same to the average consumer and even look kinda boring to me too. Apple knows what they are doing in terms of design, but not always in price point and internals.

I know especially the title! Seriously ..." made UH Ugly laptop" ! That's how I'm reading it

And I was very very confused why some letters were red. I thought it was a message within a message. That I couldn't get. But it turns out you did that. Whew.

I went and looked at the new MacBook for the first time yesterday. This thing is drop dead gorgeous. I do wish they would sell it in anodized aluminum colours, but it is a brilliant-looking machine.

I really want one now... heh.
