What is the point of buying 5K monitor now when the iPhone can only take 4K videos? Will the text be too small to see? I am a programmer.
the point is to enable editing of 4k video at actual size, while having additional room for editing software UI.

Wonder what the chances are of getting something like this, or any there panel/internals and rigging it up to the thunderbolt/ACD models. The ACD models are quite a bit thicker than todays monitors, so with some modding, don't see why the internals of new displays can't be attached to the Apple casings. Granted it renders warranty useless, but anyone modding already knows that.

I never understood why they didn't just use the iMac case without the PC components for their monitors. Use the 5k panel from the current iMacs, remove the "computer" portion, put in whatever ports/features they want (speakers, thunderbolt, usb, etc) and be done. It would certainly cut down on costs since they could bulk order more panels and cases and wouldn't have to retool the production for the case.

It's also too bad they removed the target display feature. They may have sold some extra iMacs to people who really cared about aesthetics.

It is what happens when people stand up and speak the truth.
When something is unfair, don't buy.
Then the change will happen.

How many people were "not buying" a screen that's not available for another month?

Last years Retina MacBook Pros were already capable to run almost everything the new ones can. There was never going to be a big boost in CPU performance coming with Skylake. The improvement was always to be expected in the graphics department, from not being able to run a 5K display to being able to run two 5K@60Hz simultaneously. Maybe you and everyone else should explain what kind of otherworldly capabilities you expected to 'make it pro'?

The rumors pointed directly to the machine we've got.

Notice how he says there are no rumors indicating new iMacs, minis, Pros.

Being able to run a display and performing are two different things. If you set the requirement just to run one, that is poor.

The very Important 3rd criteria you are missing is FPS... And for me, how well this 3rd criteria performs ....is the pro part, frankly no one is wasting thier time using laptop GPus when desktop ones are so so so far superior for "Pro use"

Let's wait for the benchmarks, but u can save yourself some time and Google 460 performance....you may be surprised in just what your getting...

Its almost as if they just couldn't be bothered and got awfully lazy. I mean it would have taken a handful of people max to rejig the internal layout with the same casings. Sure its low volume product, but the same could be said of the macmini, Mac Pro, iPods. You don't need much display real estate on shops as you just need ONE model on display. Seriously pissed at Apple and their greed and laziness.

Hmmm…
It would appear the word got back to Apple about their user base not being happy about being taken advantage of just for being a loyal Mac user.
So much for our friends out there saying that the complainers should just shut up or leave because complaining won't do any good.

You gotta be kidding me, this is Apples BEST Pro Lappie yet, as well as it's BEST seller yet, you think they listen to the perennial nay sayer here????? NOT!
[doublepost=1478393709][/doublepost]
Maybe Apple are realising they have screwed up.

Just how do you think they screwed up, this is their MOST POWERFUL MBP EVER, and their FASTEST SELLING EVER,screwed up? Um no!

RGB color gamut and brightness (300 nits vs 500 nits) are inferior on the Lenovo. So is the GPU (look up the 1000M scores compared to something like the GTX 960M, which is a reasonable comparison to the Radeon Pro 450 despite drawing 30 more watts). You're also stuck with desktop RAM, so forget about battery life comparisons. Additionally, you're going to need to buy a Samsung SM951 at 512GB in order to get similar disk speeds, not the 960 Pro...so $485 instead of $330, which means the Lenovo is at $2100. Weight of the Lenovo is 1.5 pounds higher. Then consider that the Lenovo doesn't have an option to get the jumbo size track pad, Touch ID and secure enclave chip, and Touch Bar. Not really looking like such a bargain.

That's the problem with the whining about Apple machines. I see it all the time. People get fixated on a few basic numbers and leave it at that. Look, if you want some brick of a laptop with 25 ports, Apple isn't for you. Deal with it.

The trackpad alone is so vastly superior to any other machine I have ever used it's actually kind of unbelievable.

And people can say what they want about Windows 10 being a lot better. Great. Enjoy using it. I don't mind. When Windows is UNIX-based, I might care. The platform ecosystem itself has a lot of value to me.

I'm not complaining about the fact the prices dropped. I'm complaining because companies that launch really successful new products don't announce price cuts before some of them are even available for purchase.

As a 2013 Mac Pro workstation owner, I'm frankly disgusted that Apple never released a suitable 4K or 5K display to pair up with it. That should have happened close to day 1 of its release, really. Now, when they FINALLY announce a couple of updated monitors, they're so lazy about it, they just ask LG to market a couple of "designed for Apple" screens with no Apple logo on them. And the result is a 4K screen that's smaller than anything I'd bother with at this point, and a 5K that's a suitable size, but incompatible with a Mac Pro at native resolution.

This whole thing feels like they're expected people like me to just buy the overpriced new Macbook Pro laptop to run the new display and live with the limitations that would impose, like no more than 16GB of RAM and the inconvenience of no USB 2.0/3.0 ports. Not to mention the graphics card isn't as powerful as what's in my Pro workstation now.
Well that's a legitimate complaint, but since the monitor and laptop are being released at basically the same time, it's natural they go together. And there are obviously a lot of other alternatives for older computers. On another note, idk why people are complaining about the keyboard so much. I stopped in an Apple Store and tried the non-touch bar version today. Got used to the butterfly keys instantly.

The only thing I can really complain about is $ really. I guess a little fatter for a bigger battery and 32GB memory would've been good too, but it's ok for what I do. The new 13" was a really nice machine, and hopefully now that all their laptops have USB-C only, products will be more unified to not need a million ports. I know it's early, but having one port that can do everything is really better if there are peripherals for it. So if they lowered the price and included a hub with a bunch of ports to aid in the transition period, I'd be happy. They definitely messed up a bit, but after playing with it, I really do like it and can't wait to get one after not buying one for so long.

Great Display, but will it work on PC Desktops? Need other connections too, not just a USB-C to be useful.

Along with dropping the prices on all of its USB-C adapters accessories to help new MacBook Pro owners transition to USB-C more affordably, Apple has also introduced some significant price cuts to the 4K and 5K LG UltraFine Displays that were announced at its October 27 Mac event.

lgultrafine5kdisplay-800x605.jpg

The LG UltraFine 5K Display is now priced at $974, a $325 price cut from its original price of $1,299.95.

The LG UltraFine 4K Display is now priced at $524, a $175 price cut from its original price of $699.95.

Each of LG UltraFine Display was designed in partnership with Apple to work specifically with the new MacBook Pro. The displays connect to the Apple's new MacBook Pro machines over Thunderbolt 3 and have features like built-in USB-C ports, charging capabilities, stereo speakers, P3 wide color gamut support, and on the 5K monitor, a camera and a microphone.

LG's 4K display is available for purchase immediately from the online Apple Store and will ship out to customers in five to six weeks. The 5K Display is not yet available for purchase, with Apple planning to launch it in December.

The price drops on the two displays are labeled as "Special Pricing" and will last until the end of the year. Apple also plans to discount its USB-C adapters until the end of 2016.

Apple used to be all about the user experience, esthetics and cohesive design. So, maybe someone can explain why in the world would Apple choose to sell LG monitors alongside the new MacBook Pro.

I work with retailers for a living. Private branding is easily. It really is easy. Apple will move sufficient volumes to justify any cost associated with factory setup and tooling. The manufacturer could have easily absorbed this cost, no problem.

I don't like the direction Apple is taking here... These should have been Apple branded.

For me this sounds like a recognition by Apple. They realized they didn't get everything right with the new macbook pro and now they are adjusting accordingly. They probably release 32gb ram option and price cut in 2017.

Yep, they know their sales numbers, and obviously it's failing their expectations.

To be fair: Intel does not provide a mobile chipset that supports low voltage DDR4 Ram/32GB yet. As soon as they do, Apple will beef up their offering. I would not bet on a price cut though.

This doesn't affect Apple's bottom line. It's not even their product. All your whining to drop the prices on macbook pros just gets you a discount on monitors and dongles that no one wanted in the first place.
"not even their product."
So we know Apple "worked closely" with LG so that the monitor would work seemlessly with Apple's new Laptops.
We know Apple dropped the price.
Who set the initial price?
LG Or Apple?
If LG then how does Apple set a new lower price for another company's monitor?
If Apple, then how is it "not even their product."?
If Apple is just lowering the price per unit then Apple is taking the hit for every monitor sold.
How is that not affecting their bottom line?
Finally, you did get one thing correct, no one wants Apple's dongles, though everyone buying those new laptops has to buy them if they want to connect to:
Ethernet, USB printer, their iPhone, digital camera, external hard drive, a projector, a tv, their preferred wired mouse, etc.

5K @ 60Hz is possible with two Mini DisplayPort streams, that requires dual Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt cables. The Dell 5K display uses this method and works with 2014/2015 5K iMacs, 2015 15" Retina MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro (Late 2013). Sure plugging in a single Thunderbolt 3/USB-C cable is a better solution, even one worth waiting for. But LG could have put in an option for Thunderbolt 2 compatibility for those who just bought a brand new 5K iMac and have to use the older standard.
Only because some weird hack works with one Dell 5K display, doesn't make it a standard. At least not a widely adopted one. Oddly enough I found a 'Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter'. So you can use an older 5K display with a newer TB3 computer, but not the other way around.

TB3Adapter_5K.jpg

Early adopters often run into such problems, which is why it would have been smart to wait for the port most likely to become the real standard of the future. Thunderbolt 3 still opens two DisplayPort 1.2 streams to run a single 5K display, but now both streams go over the same cable. This solution is not only more elegant, it has a better chance of adoption and longevity, because Thunderbolt 3 comes in the shape of USB-C.

Yeah, when the technology is ready and when the processors that allow for 32 gb of lpddr4 ram are available, not before. And the price cut will happen because manufacturing will become more efficient and Apple will have begun amortising the sunk costs incurred from designing the new MacBook Pro.

Not because of some admission of guilt, because there is nothing to apologise for.

Wrong! USB-C is USB, TB3 is entirely compatible with USB 3.1 (10 Gbps), 3.0 (5 Gbps), 2.0 (480 Mbps), 1.x (12 Mbps) protocols and can connect to all your printers, phones, cameras, hard drives etc. even without a dongle. All you need is a USB cable with the right plugs on both ends. Ethernet is already missing from all MacBook Airs and all Retina MacBook Pros ever build. And even USB-C to HDMI 1.4b cables will be available to support 4K TVs with 3D and Surround Sound. You no longer need Apples USB-C-Digital-AV-Multiport-Adapter, unless you have a MacBook with only one port and want to charge it and connect a TV at the same time.

PS: About the only thing you'll need a adapter for is an old wired mouse, because the cable comes right out of the device and can not be replaced with a newer one.

What doesn't dropping the price of an accessory have to do with the sale sale volume of the MacBook Pro!?

They probably expected X% of MacBook Pro buyers to also buy a monitor. The % of monitor sales is probably far lower than expected, thus the price adjustment of the monitor. Which has no bearing on the claims of high MacBook Pro pre-orders.

LG could have also wanted the price dropped to stimulate sales, not solely an Apple decision.

Exactly. And Apple could have heard the accusations that they kept the MacBook Pro as USB-C only and so lowered the prices of the adaptors (to practically give them away) in response. Some people are so desperate to paint a negative image of the company, it makes me wonder why they follow Apple news at all.

How bad ARE the new MacBook pros selling? If they had planned this already, these lower peripheral prices would have been the starting point after the event. The only thing that makes sense is this is some kind of damage control...

Laptop sales have been on the decline for several years and Apple thinks they can raise the price with an incremental update. That's some serious hubris.
