<snip MS sniping>
But I would prefer a slightly bigger mac mini, with space for 2 hard drives and the option for a graphics card. This I think would make half the world switch in no time, priced around $600 (basic), graphics card and double hdd model around $800-900 (and oh yes! with the new mac keyboard).

I don't think the mini is going to have 2 Hdds. Man, they don't even have room for 1 full sized (3.5" was it?) one. Just get an external HDD.

I'd think that with integrated graphics, combo drive, and smaller hard drive, the base 20" iMac could hit $1099 (education price $999)

Although I thought the latest rumor had the 17" model back in the lineup?

I'd still like some rumor site to dig up some specs before Tuesday...anyone...anyone...Bueller?

Combo drive?? I will be utterly disgusted if any new mac, even an educational version, ships with a combo drive from here on. We have now reached the era of HD disc formats, the price difference between apple supplying a drive that can burn DVDs should be absolutely trivial, and an insult to it's customers if it cannot.

Call me crazy, but I think that iLife AND iWork should be free...at least iLife.

iWork need to have its ducks in a row. At least have 3-4 programs in the package. Make is $59 or the current $79 with a "Word, Excel, and PPT competitor". Oh yeah, make it for Macs AND Windows, just iWork. That is a MUCH cheaper alternative to MS Office. I know about Google's suite and OpenOffice and the other free stuff. They work well, but tons still opt for MS Office. Maybe they'd opt for iWork?

iWork should work very well with Google's suite and MS Office so compatibility issues are almost nil, if it isn't already. Maybe iWork can be free for the Mac, but $59-$79 on the PC? One reason I think that iWork should or might also come to the PC is because of the iPhone. I think that iLife should ALWAYS stay "Mac only" like .Mac and most other things, but iWork could get a few people to realize what the Mac has to offer. iWork should also work with .Mac...if it doesn't already.

I've gotta agree with you here. An 8x superdrive (which is slow these days) costs, what, $40 retail? Maybe $50? Apple probably gets them for much cheaper.

Personally, I wish all their superdrives were 16x at this point, since those are quite cheap these days.

I'd like to know where to find a 16x slot drive then...

Prediction

I believe the event on the 7th will be just hardware based, but I believe soon, around OSX.5 release we will see iWorks - that can work on your iPhone!

Just a guess

So the event is August 7, correct? What else is happening August 7th?? The US space shuttle Endeavor is launching, and could only mean one thing:

the iSat!! The first of many Apple branded satellites to be positioned in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, allowing for the new iMacs, Mac Pros, Macbooks, Macbook Pros, iPhones and iPods to stream all of their data anywhere in the world.

You'll also be able to stream all of your terrestrial iTunes music, tv shows, and movies, as well as iPhoto albums and YouTube while in orbit. This is all paving way for the ISS Apple Store, and in 10 years the Moon Apple store!

:p

But seriously, I can't wait to see what revisions they have for the Mac lineup, as well as some possible updates to iLife and iWork.

I've been ranting about Apple's optical drives for over a year now. They're ridiculously slow and of-old! Drives that are literally 4x faster than the drives Apple includes on its iMac exist for low prices. I realize most of these are tray loading and not slot, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to design a fast slot optical drive. It's almost embarrassing when burning or ripping a CD, how slow it chugs along. Perhaps Apple could develop its own slot loading optical drive. I seriously doubt we'll see a Blu drive though, it would be horridly slow in slot-loading format.

ll see a split in the imac lineup if they drop the 17"

20" & 24" imac (in white or black)
24" & 30" imac pro (anodized aluminum/other metal)

but i really can't see them dropping the 17" and hope they don't it was what my parents were gonna get.

i hope they beef up the mini and drop the price, i think for most people its just more cost effective to get a imac

but i bought my mac pro through the idea i was originally gonna get a imac on the higher end 24" but realized by the time i upped it to what i want i could just get the mac pro, i had 2 very nice high end CRTs at home so i saved the money i would of spent on a upgraded imac and went pro, and loved it ever since. and plus i don't feel any buyers remorse if they upgrade the 7th... unless well if it comes stock with 8cores ad 4gigs of ram at intro price... but thats doubtful

I don't know why not to use bootcamp.... it's free....

Anyway, the extent of my VM thingys will be bootcamp on the new iMac, along with Sheepshaver on the new iMac and my old Windows machine.

Easy, cause not everyone wants to reboot their computer to use a windows program. I wouldn't. What a pain in the butt. Who cares if boot camp is free. You really can't swing the measly $40 for VMware (or $79 after pre-release purchase)? Unless you're playing a game or doing CAD, boot camp is silly.

Wait.... Iwork comes with a writing program better than textedit, and could compete with MS Word?

According to this it says that Steve is hosting. The article reads:
Jobs To Host Tuesday Event: After playing coy about whether or not Apple's CEO would make an appearance at the intimate, invitation-only event scheduled for Aug. 7 on his Cupertino campus -- where it is widely expected that the new line of slim, Intel-based iMacs will be unveiled -- Apple PR has told the Wall Street Journal's Ben Charny that Steve Jobs will indeed be there.

The WSJ article requires a paid subscription, but there's a preview.

This mean's, I hope, we'll be seing something new/or upgraded. Whether it be, Mac Socks or a whole iMac.

As a friend of a reliable source, you're spot on! iWork will replace notes, and iChat is coming as well... More also that I can't say.

I remember when there was a Mac and Windows version of Appleworks. The Windows version worked well. I think the idea of that was to encourage use in education because it could be used on both platforms. I used Appleworks on Windows in college and I never had an issue with it.
