That's a possibility. They might have built it as one-half of their upcoming folding phone to see how well the "thin" setup does with cameras, battery life, heat, etc.

simple iPhone 17 will geopardise sales of Pro.
Pro has really become a feature for creators and camera men.

Pro-motion (to keep up with Samsung and Google), will take away sales from Pro. Easy.

But they have no choice (vs. competition).

Look at the sock price (dropping big time as presentation happens).

Amazing (although repeated like 1000x times, more than camera zoom), did not happen.

people (like me) will still buy 17 iphone (and by the way 16 pro will get a maaaaasive discount, as the only thing better vs. iphone 17 - is probably camera).

so this year the buyer is the king. Also considering Pixel Pro and Samsung.

Apple is becoming a commodity, sorry folks, but time is running out for the company. They need to innovate (including AI).

I can remember Nokia who were specializing in phones. Things might just happen to apple if phone industry is transformed (where Apple is no longer a leader / beacon).

i may be too pessimistic, but, just take a step back and compare vs. outer world.

More proof that Tim Cook needs to go, sooner than later. Quite possibly one of the worst product presentations I've ever seen from Apple. About the same energy as a sloth in a wrestling match.

To be fair, feigning interest in that snooze fest of a product lineup would be an Oscar worthy performance. And this inept management team that Timmy put in place is just not that good.

Wow. Just looked on the store. They really went with no black Pro phone this year. That’s a bit of a dealbreaker for me for that much money. I kinda need a new phone and I might just go with a 16 Pro Max now.

If would be much cooler to have, instead of a MacBook running on an iPhone chip, to have a MacBook case, with monitor, keyboard and trackpad, that an iPhone docks into.

But that's not going to happen.

Doesn’t even need a trackpad. The phone can dock in where the trackpad would be and become the trackpad.

I was posting on another apple chat site and majority of people were saying this was a strong showing from Apple and a worthy upgrade year. Come here to MacRumors and immediately see the same old hating and crying lol. If you have a 16 then yeah, this was probably underwhelming for you. But anyone not with last years phone should be pretty hyped with iPhone and watch upgrades.

Crazy part is most of you will be pre ordering Friday and then coming back next weekend with buyers remorse topics from folks who upgrade yearly SMH.

I still use my 4 with my clock radio on my night stand. Occasionally I will pick it up to move stuff around and it always shocks me how great it feels in my hand. It really was the peak of their design.

Tim must go, at least the Sonos CEO had the humility to go (eventually). Apple are no longer Innovators, they're barely even followers and this comes from someone who's been a staunch Apple supporter for decades.

They did spend all that money on their very own private venue, so that they could have more control over the narrative... and then Covid had to come along and force everybody to rethink things, ultimately giving corporations an excuse to save money by never ever doing any product announcements in person. Because, ya know... the complete control over a pre-recorded release video is apparently worth more than all they spent on that theatre.

Credit where credit is due: at least they're not falling for the sunk cost fallacy... but it is nonetheless somewhat sad that Steve's namesake venue fell into disuse so quickly.

I honestly believe that it's due to they don't want Steve Jobs to be constantly reminded to people. Apple isn't forgetting Steve, but they're trying to distance themselves from Steve. It's Tim's Apple now and he operates it as "Look at me, I am captain now". It's a shame what Tim and his cohorts are doing to Apple's name and legacy.

I was so set on getting the Pro (normal one) for the battery life... but it has only a 1 hour more difference to the normal 17... and beside that 17 has the more awesome colors. Really thinking about just getting the normal 17 this time... I dont make much pictures and videos even more rarely. Dont see a point to drop that much more money on the Pro.

Edit: ok, it says optical-quality zoom.

Only marketing mumbo-jumbo. 48mp at 4x optical vs 12mp at 8x optical... this is just cropping the 48mp image to half size, aka adding 2x digital zoom on top of the true 4x optical.
