got my 8 core mac pro 2.8 today physically sick

Fed ex came with my new mac pro today. The one I have been saving for as a poor educator for 6 months. After seeing this post... I am right now on the phone with apple asking to return it. I knew upgrades were coming but I bet on may/june. I can't wait past April. Ok they will return it. It was a custom build. When I gave the reason for return new product is coming, they asked a manager and approved it. This is cruel if I did not need it so badly it would not be a big deal. Keep it or return it hmmm.

I know for sure that they are planning to introduce a very significant update of Logic in March, so I believe they will use this media event to showcase Logic 9.

From what I have heard, Apple are have put a lot of work into the new Logic 9, as Logic 8 was a merely a face-lift from the previous version -- Logic 9 will represent the next generation digital workstation.
Also ties in with the supposed Mac Pro announcement at the event. I hope "what you have heard" is correct. :)

The iMac can get a silent update since it will just be getting updated specs that have already been mentioned (i.e. mini DisplayPort, nVIDIA graphics, FireWire 400 dropped).

What are you, vindictive? You actually think the "consumer" level desktop will follow suit of the "consumer" level notebook and drop firewire?

Because dropping firewire from the aluminum MacBook had nothing to do with the change to a small, unibody design, and everything to do with aggravating people, right?

...Mac Pros with Xeon processors along with a pleasant 'surprise'.

Hmm, now everyone is starting to guess than Snow Leopard will be released to coincide with Mac Pros. Not likely, with no rumors of a golden master as yet.

I'm going with no new Mac Pros until later.

Similarly, 3 weeks is a while out, what about those licensing restrictions snafu btw nVidia & Intel?

'surprise'? Can only think of an updated iPhone with rumors of flash being ordered/in tight supply...due to Apple.

Man, I would be so pis**d if I was an iMac owner/desktop user. Someone explain to me why you'd pay a premium for what will be an outdated product, even when it is realeased. I love the Apple notebook line and the ipod+iphone products but I get angry at Apple on behalf of frustrated desktop users. Apart from looking incredibly cool, what is the benefit of the iMac (OK, OS X, that's a given.)

nothing^^

seems plausible. my gut feeling is that this will be a consumer event. with the economy the way it is, who is buying computers? it is more likely the consumer cheap computers will sell than expensive professional machines. imac is way overdue... mac mini even more out of date. imac is the top selling mac, i used to work there. the mac mini, the cheapest mac. these new releases will also help to sell their new cinema display which they are advertising towards "consumers" and not professionals. without snow leopard, the current mac pro cannot properly support multicore tasks/applications. it would be pointless now to introduce new mac pros. they may bump the mac pros until summer. it is more likely wwdc they will announce/show snow leopard and new mac pros with blu-ray and new professional cinema displays. now is the season for consumers, not professionals. mac pros are great as is for the moment. besides, april apple is releasing final cut studio 3 at NAB. they can also upgrade the Mac Pro there which would be more appropriate. they could also be releasing a new iphone, apple tv, or a gaming system. i don't expect a media event in the near future to be mac professional-centric. long shot. expect consumer devices that are affordable and will be in higher demand by the people that live on main street.

How would it be outdated? Maybe the performance would be lower than a PC, but that doesn't make it outdated.

I wonder if this means new Macbook Airs??

The wife and I were at bestbuy this weekend purchasing a new macbook and the 2 store managers came over and were talking about how to arrange the

If it were not for Best Buy the majority of shoppers wouldn't even know what an Apple computer looks like.

OK, maybe not outdated, but for what you're paying, inadequate. My point being that if you a pay a premium, shouldn't you have the right to expect a premium performance/specs?
Definitely. Which is why I'm advocating those 65 W quad-cores so much. If the iMac line ends up with dual-cores (like that supposed picture), then I'll be disappointed.

Apple will get more money by selling machines with Leopard first, then releasing Snow Leopard. So most of the people will pay for the upgrade. So that's probably what's going to happen.

Because you DO get premium performance. OS X is much efficient, stable and trouble-less than Windows. Even if the hardware is less powerful, OS X does as slow as Windows does with time or when you frequently install/uninstall applications. And not everyone wants to waste time dealing with maintenance and malware.

When I look at the prices, they seem expensive. But when I use OS X, I fully think that it is worth every single cent I spent for it. When I use Windows, I just regret having spent what I spent for it.
