To let people know what happened to my situation. I went in on the 25th, started the replacement process. Apple took my CC info on the 27th. I revived my replacement machine today.

I had a base model 2012, but somehow received a 2016 Space Grey with 2.9GHz, RP 460 & a 2TB SSD (I only had 256MB before). This is a $4000 machine brand new!

Love Apple's Customer service!

pics of specs or it didn't happen. ;-)

well call me VERY surprised.. that is literally a 1400$ upgrade JUST for the 2TB drive. I can't imagine that apple didn't have any 500GB or 1TB drives machines in the refurb inventory. It's truly an AMAZING upgrade.
I was shocked when I saw the paper they gave me. I am a very happy camper! Now to buy a bunch of USB C accessories haha

That's awesome :)
You got the same machine I did (picked up on Friday).
Granted by old machine was a maxed-out CTO 2012 2.7/16GB/768GB so the one I received was the equivalent (in late 2016).

Mine is also refurbed (mfg date Jan 2017) but is essentially like brand new.
After seeing this unit and how it was packaged etc I would definitely consider an Apple refurbished product to anyone who might be on the fence - its really like new.

FYI here is a link to the model currently on the Apple site https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...core-Intel-Core-i7-with-Retina-display-Silver

To configure a similar machine in 2017 spec is indeed around $4200 (3.1/16GB/2TB).

Truly amazing when you think about the customer service.

It seems the majority of machines given in exchange were refurbished so I'm unsure if this was an exercise in profit loss (I doubt it) but in any case the amount of good customer service feedback and goodwill you can't put a price on.
The customer wins and so does Apple.

What would you do if you went in on the 25th and were offered a free battery instead of a free laptop?

How many other people were in that position?

What happened to us wasn't even that: on the 25th we were offered a paid-for battery at the normal $200 cost.

I went in on the 25th, I'm getting a computer. I wonder what the deciding factor/cut off time was for stores to stop offering.

I went on 25th and was offered free battery several days later. I thought the program finished on Wednesday 26th, just we found out on 25th (even though it was dated 21st)?

I'm still waiting for my local store to pull their finger out and get the ball rolling!

Phoned them up yesterday for them to tell me it'll take 2 weeks to order the "chip" OR the replacement laptop - when I questioned what he meant by chip, he said it's what it said on his screen.

Just got a call from the store - they won't have the battery in until end of august / beginning of september, so looks like the contraint is still real. Still no offer of free replacement or free battery, despite the wait.

So do you think there's still hope for who brought the rmbp after the 25th? I don't know if I should call them or not tomorrow, I left my computer on the 29th, they said there isn't any possibility of a computer swap and they never did it (I stayed there 3hrs and talked with 3 geniuses and the manager), so I agreed to pay 209€ to get a new battery, new screen (some spots are showing) and a new logic board with GPU.

Doesn't hurt to try. Press them you need a working computer asap

When did the order the top case for you? Mine was order on Saturday night. When I collected my device on Monday, I was told it would be in on 3rd August.

I'm still waiting having dropped off my computer last Friday 7/28/17 (appt made 7/24) haven't received any call for CC or update on shipping of battery etc.

Not a good idea to make public this kind of info it will push people to go in store with the idea of enjoying a good opportunity ....

I went today to the Kudamm apple store, and I was only offered a battery replacement in 2-3 weeks they told. I also asked for the complete replacement, they told it was only a short-time offer and also not public, and that they discontinued it right after it came to light.

I was reluctant to leave my notebook there and wait 2-3 weeks, so I told them to take the order and let me know when there is a battery and case. What they also told me that only the battery and the case would be replaced, so the motherboard/memory/ssd whatever would stay the same, no replacement.

I didn't want to push my luck, so I brought my notebook back. Now I'm waiting for the information on when I can bring my notebook in for repair. I hope they won't get any replacement parts and continue the exchanging. My case is also not a simple one as my keyboard layout is american, despite living in Germany, and I also had the maxed-out version of the mid-2012, which was a custom build at that time.

I brought mine in on July 12th originally for the Repair Extension for Video Issues, also complaining that the screen had burn-in, and the battery wasn't holding charge. They told me it was just OS problems, and sent me home.

I spent a week trying (and failing) to get an OS reinstalled, so brought it back in on July 24th. I got them to cover the repairs under the Repair Extension (even though mine should have already expired.)

They sent it off. I just got it back (August 1st.) They replaced the display assembly, top case (including battery,) logic board, heatsinks and fans. Basically the only original parts I got back were my AirPort card (which I promptly replaced with an 802.11ac model I had in before the repair,) SSD, and the bottom case. No new model.

(I had an 802.11ac AirPort card in it, but before taking it in for repair, I swapped the original 802.11n card in. I've been bitten by that on a previous MacBook Pro; when they did a warranty repair on my first-gen 2006 MBP with later-upgrade 802.11n card, they swapped out the AirPort card for the original 802.11g model without asking permission first.)

Man .. that is a new computer! It is not a 2016/7 spec, yet it is something you already work with and is covered by more warranty. From the keyboard to the ports, by most user experience, the verdict is split.

My breaking point is the mag-safe. That is the only everyday experience with which Apple screwed us over.

After holding on to it (read - denying Windows) for so many years, they are denying it to the Mac users!

Off course it will be like brand new! And like you said I'm super used working with it! I can't say that I wouldn't like a brand new TB MBP though... but I don't know if there will be any chance at this point.

Anyway, I'm currently using a 2016 top specs 15" touchbar MacBook Pro, I took it in the meanwhile from the studio where I work, I'm getting used to the touchbar, what can I say.. the keyboard is super noisy, but not totally bad, off course it requires some practice.
The magsafe.. sad story, I have to look at the USB C ports now when trying to connect the power adaptor, really really annoying.
