Apple Exec: New Apple TV Remote Doesn't Need Find My Because It's Thicker and Harder to Lose

most of the time people lose remotes is during usage. anyway, the problem in this thread is that there is an easy solution that apple clearly had the tech to take care of and your solution is clearly to train the end user to change their lifestyle instead.

The person I was replying to was talking about kids losing the remote. Not sure how someone could lose the remote while using it. Here's an easy solution: glue an AirTag to the back of the remote. Seriously. If someone is having THAT much of an issue keeping track of the remote then that would be the perfect solution.

Because then the offspring couldn’t use the remote to operate the Apple TV. Make sense?

If they're old enough to be using the Apple TV, then they're old enough to be responsible with the remote. Comes down to parenting. If they can't handle it, then they lose their Apple TV privileges for a time.

The apologism in this thread is both absurd and completely predictable.

if the solution is always in fixing the user, then there is no need for things like air tags.
Exactly. Every apologist argument defending Apple here can be applied to argue that AirTags shouldn't exist. Or the original Find My Phone shouldn't have existed.
  • Just keep track of your remote, don't lose it? Don't lose your backpack, no need for an AirTag.
  • Backpack gets taken out of the house, so that's different? You should just be more careful with your stuff when outside the house.
  • AppleTV remote doesn't need the Find My network because it doesn't leave the home? That's true, but that doesn't mean it couldn't use a U1 chip for precision finding. If you argue that it doesn't need that, then neither do AirTags.
  • It's not necessary, just a convenience? Right, the same applies to every feature of every Apple product. They all exist to make our lives easier and more convenient. This feature would have done the same for many.
I've never lost a TV remote in nearly 40 years of using them, but I think it's ridiculous that Apple didn't apply this insanely obvious use of their own technology here. If the new remote had the Find My capability built in, I'd probably buy one to replace my existing remote. I know I'm not infallible, and one day a remote finding feature might come in handy.

Why would they advertise using AirTags on a backpack on their website? It’s pretty big so it shouldn’t get lost?

Hey, I have NO problem with people criticizing Apple, but sometimes people make mountains out of molehills. I (and others) aren't arguing that something shouldn't exist, but rather it shouldn't be a big deal (in this case) that something doesn't exist. Also, as has already been mentioned numerous times, there's a big difference between a TV remote, which you would rarely take out of your house, and an iPhone, which most people take outside their house (and even around the world) with them every day. But, speaking of AirTags - as I told the other poster - there's your solution. Simply glue one to the back of the Apple TV remote, and voila. Problem solved.

Picked up a new AppleTv and an extra remote today, but not sure why I got the remote. I have always liked the old remote. It did everything well, though I didn’t like accidentally hitting the touch area and pausing what I am watching.

Haven’t opened the new ATV yet, but unboxing the remote I was surprised to find a power cable. Not sure why considering the cost of the remote, but WTF would they include a USB-A cable??? Haven’t we been transitioned to C relentlessly over the past several years? This is the kind of chickensh!t stuff that drives folks crazy when it comes to Apple’s attention to what should be obvious details and consistency. Cable looks like a holdover from an iPhone 5.

we can add this to other historically accurate quotes:

- “Everything’s already been invented.”
- “we don’t need to worry about iPhone competition because we have 75% market share.”
- “This giant wall we built will keep the German’s out.”

My Apple TV came with the same cable earlier today. And was welcome as I have at least a dozen Apple iPhone/iPad USB-A chargers I've accumulated over the years. Ditto for my wife.

Imagine all the outrage if a USB-C cable was in the box from people who haven't transitioned to USB-C.

(This guy has no children, or they’re teens/adults…)
It’s true, I had twins and 2 daughters and the I can only admit to almost having all 3 out of 4 remotes broken or shattered but never lost 🤣

I am heartbroken, this little accessory that has been with me since 2015 does not fit the new remote…. I’m sure they’ll charge 15bucks for the new one… for some reason the latches are like 1 mm short from the thickness of the new since I’m confused because the lightning port size has never changed in the past or either that or it’s not compatible I guess

Then why do you need Find My for your backpack or bike or anything larger than the new Siri Remote?
I have backpacks and bikes in my apartment. They don't get lost there. I suppose if I took my Siri remote on a 20 mile trip, it might get forever lost. But in my apartment? I know where it gets lost!

Unfortunately, some ice cream melted into the menu button, which is now forever sticky. So I'm probably forced to buy either a $60 Siri Remote or that $259 remote that has its own hub. Hmmmm.....

Just got the new Siri Remote today and when using the YouTube app, you used to be able to skip ahead 15 seconds or so by pressing a certain area of the trackpad and no controls came up on screen, which was nice. Now I can't seem to replicate that feature with the new remote, it skips ahead the 15 seconds but it pauses the video and the controls come up on screen...that's not cute.
Same. Made a thread about it here. Submit feedback to YouTube please.
