Because it’s not the same. 3D Touch is quicker. This will make 3D Touch actions much slower. As someone who uses 3D Touch on the keyboard regularly, it’s a major blow.

I’m also wary that Apple will slow down 3D Touch on existing devices via a software update in order to artificially lessen the difference with Haptic Touch and help justify their decision. Such is Apple’s pattern of user-hostile behaviour of late. In fact, I get the feeling they already did so slightly in iOS 12.3.x.

I’m getting ever so frustrated with this company.

Wow now that you mention this I just checked on my iPhone X and they did add a noticeable delay to bring it more in line with haptic touch. Gross

Probably because nobody is using it. it's to unintuitive.

Yes, pressing things requires intuition.

Really won't miss it. Don't miss it all on my XR, long-pressing works as well in most instances and it was never clear where 3D Touch would and wouldn't work... it was mostly a guessing game. In all honesty, the biggest feature I enjoyed about the 3D Touch was pressing firmly on the keyboard to get a mouse-like cursor. That is still present on the XR by long-pressing the space bar.

It wasn't a bad feature, but was mostly a novelty.

Pressing on icons opens a context menu and I use it daily.

This is a feature mostly everyone on here calls a gimmick but I love using. I hope they keep a variation of it on the new iPhone.

I get that it’s got its uses, but maybe the number of people who don’t get it far far far outnumber those who do.

Yeah i second that, in messages to peek its still fast but on the app icons its definitely a lot slower than it used to be before the Xr was released

I’m not seeing that on my XS Max - 3D Touch on App icons seems just as fast as always.

Agreed. Why Apple seems to want to throw away its best innovations that set it apart from the competition (eg MagSafe) is beyond me.

Apple doesn't have a chief product owner that drives innovation. Steve Jobs excelled in that role when he returned to Apple in the late 1990s. Tim Cook is not the right guy for a chief product owner role but he should be looking for someone to fill that role.

Apple is repeating the same mistake with Shortcuts....great idea, poor execution.
Oh yeah, shortcuts, I remember everyone talking about this amazing feature after the keynote last WWDC and out it came and .. that was it. Probably seen a couple of articles about it since, mostly skimmed them as they were fairly detail-heavy and thought "perhaps I'll look at that later". If I didn't read a lot of Apple articles, I wouldn't even know the feature was .. a feature.

Major fail on apples part. Take away a feature but still going to charge more for the phone. Anybody who actually does mobile gaming like shooters and racing games will be taking a major loss as 3D Touch worked great for games and day to day usage as well

No, it's 100% clear why they would remove the 3.5mm jack. It takes up space that's better used for other things. I LOATHE cabled headphones. They're cumbersome, they tend to break (surprise, surprise) AT the jack, and in general earbuds sound mostly the same. (Yeah, yeah, you can get some good ones, I know. I owned a pair of Shure 425s, so don't audio-quality BS me.)

It's an antiquated 1-use-only port that takes up an inordinate amount of space for no functionality advantage. The fact that you didn't like the decision doesn't make it 'unclear' why they made it.

Right. I think they called it "Courage".

Anyone with a Square reader would tell you it was not a one trick deal, but even so, it took something away for no payoff. I'm quite aware about the dongle audio quality, and outside of being 16/44 output (Not 24bit like the 3.5 port), that's excellent. What it did in practicality was move a lot of people to crap BT cans, or drive them to use lightning-enabled crap buds... or carry a dongle.

Removing 3D Touch is a handy feature that is simpler than long touch. Even so, both 3D and Long are unintuitive within the UI, but 3D offered immediate tactile feedback. With no visual indicator that either is available, iOS misses hard there. However removing it, from the ARTICLE, said it was UNCLEAR.

I still stand by the concept that a dongle, no matter how good, is a step backwards. You may hate wires, but I do not. This is because, as you pointed out with your 425's, your cans don't need a battery! Do me a favour, and tell me how many AirPods sold so far will be usable in 3 years? How many will be in a garbage dump? 90% or more.

Your 425s will continue to work indefinitely. I call that a win.

I thought it was a gimmick too. But when I got a 6s (a year after it came out), I actually started loving the feature. Now had it on 8, and XS Max. I will be really pissed if they get rid of it and don't duplicate the features with Haptic Touch or whatever.

The app icons are especially useful, as well as the flashlight on the lock creen.

Pressing on icons opens a context menu and I use it daily.

I'm aware of what it does and how it works, but some apps are more feature-rich than others when it comes to 3D Touch and - other than simply going through and pressing on everything - there's little indicator on what icons support 3D Touch and which ones don't. For instance, had I not read about it, I never would have thought to press on the forward or back buttons in Safari for history.

This would be freaking horrible, I use 3D Touch so much. Prob most used feature i use. To peek and pop links and pictures is huge let alone reply to messages on the lock screen. Removing it for more edge to edge can’t be true Cause it’s pretty much already edge to edge.

The only real reason I can see it going away is for Touch ID in the display. They need to make room for the layer of tiny pin hole cameras to achieve all screen Touch ID. But if In screen Touch ID isn’t coming this year then why remove it?!
