I used an XR the other day and absolutely hated how slow it was to trigger 3D touch shortcuts using haptic touch instead of 3d touch. Once you get used to 3D touch, you can't go back. Going back would be frustrating because 3D touch habits that take a milisecond to do will now take a full second to do via haptic touch. Seconds in the smartphone world make a huge different to UX.

I just turned off 3D Touch in my XS and it switched to haptic touch. It’s really not a big difference.

>Force touch to select words while in cursor mode.
>Peek and pop.
>Context menu when force touch app icon.
>Move cursor around easier (not forced to move from bottom to the top).
I don’t see Apple develops any substitutes for those functions in iOS 12. Maybe iOS 13 we will see. But as its current form, unacceptable. Haptic touch is basically a normal touch or long press with a haptic feedback after all.

Terrible news if the rumor turns out to be true. Haptic Touch is garbage compared to 3D Touch and I use it all of the time, especially for the keyboard. I love being able to scroll through text with one amount of pressure, then actually selecting text with another amount of pressure. That alone will be a great loss to me. It was the biggest reason I would jailbreak back before they released that feature officially. The software one sucks and it doesn’t allow you to select text, just scroll through it.

Moving the curser is the most useful feature of it. But no way they do away with that, haptic touch should still make the curser move! It better!

Apple just keeps piling on the reasons to keep my 6s.
Thanks for helping me save some money Apple. Especially since my 5th Gen. iPad had to be replaced, at my expense, because of some mysterious internal failure causing the iPad to only display the Boot Apple. Thanks Apple Genius for helping me out, not at all.

Wouldn’t miss it. Never used it once. Don’t know anyone else using it.

Hi, I’m Simon. Now you do! :D

But we already knew that... A shame, one of the more interesting features from recent(ish) iPhones. If it's to facilitate under screen TouchID though as was rumoured a while back, worth it IMO.

Getting rid of the notch in favour of under-screen Touch ID is the only reason I’d even consider dropping 3D Touch, but we all know that’s not gonna happen any time soon.

Im reminded of a simpler time with jailbreak tweaks. There was a lovely tweak that allowed for additional menus and even going folderless by using gestures over icons. This would be absolutely possible and even more so better than 3D Touch if Apple were to take such a leap.

Okay, I misspoke. No haptics but the same long press features. The long press features I care about, the haptics I don’t.

Also, I find 3D Touch to sometimes be annoying. I would be fine without it as long as the peek functionality is enabled for long press.

No harm intended or received :)

Long press has been present in iOS on all devices for a while now. Personal preference I suppose.

Old Apple used to find a way. New Apple would rather piss off users to make a saving. Don’t like or use 3D Touch? Turn it off. You’ve always had the choice. Why should those who do use and like it lose that choice to use it?

Apple will probably bring contextual menus with mouse support. 3D Touch was basically a two button mouse type feature/function. I guess we cannot have two button mouse support on macOS, but 3D Touch on iOS :p

Good. I’ve had “3D” Touch disabled since it came out. Just another useless gimmick that Apple tried to push with fail. Stop with the gimmicks and give us longer battery life.

So because you don’t like it others who do shouldn’t have it?

But how is Apple supposed to make the device thinner :p

The problem is that with 3D Touch it was really easy to pass into selection mode by relaxing and pressing again. Is this somehow still possible with haptic touch?

No, because there’s no way for the phone to know the pressure you’re applying (an extra dimension to the input) if you remove the sensor it requires to do so.

That’s my
I wouldn't mind if the Haptic Touch was as fast as 3D Touch. It's just too slow for me. With 3D Touch i can quickly turn on the flashlight and other things, with haptic touch on XR it's taking too long. So if they want to remove it, then at least make 3 options - slow, normal and fast with fast being as fast as 3D Touch
main problem..cuz with haptic touch you have to wait

Reading this thread, it sounds like only very very very few, actually uses 3D-touch as 3D-touch, since almost all examples mentioned in favour it, could be handled by a simpler force-touch implementation.

So in reality they could replace 3D-touch, e.g. to give room for fullscreen touch-id, with a simpler force-touch technologi without almost any people noticing.

I have an 6s and while I do use it once in a while, I think it is badly utilized and don't miss it on my Android devices.

I don't know what to think. But as someone who uses the feature, it doesn't sit well with me.

Apple doesn't charge through problems anymore... They just throw their hands up and say oh well, we gave it our best.

Meanwhile, competitors are chomping at the bit and actually innovating. Practically begging to be given a chance.

It's all very frustrating and dismissive on Apple part. I want to be so reckless right now and just give up Apple products and go another direction.

Apples attitude and ways are getting a little long in tooth at this point.

Say what?

I just tried that on my XS Max and lasted 2 minutes before turning it back on. I lost all my context menus in my Apps (which I use regularly). I also missed the cursor mode for text. That’s just the first two I noticed right away. It’s a massive downgrade in usability.
