I thought 3D Touch was great when it first came out on my iPhone 6S, and I used it frequently, but then I bought an iPad Pro, which doesn’t have it (no iPads do). After that, it became a source of irritation instead, as the two devices worked differently now, and I was constantly trying to force-press the iPad with no results. Eventually, I went with the lowest common denominator, and gave up using 3D Touch entirely (or nearly so), so that I’d get a consistent result on both devices.

Apple will probably bring contextual menus with mouse support. 3D Touch was basically a two button mouse type feature/function. I guess we cannot have two button mouse support on macOS, but 3D Touch on iOS :p

3D Touch is literally right click on a mouse. A regular tap is a left click. Pretty simplez

I will miss it, for few things I love it like multitasking and trackpad, don’t want to wait with long press. But I understand few people use it

It is always interesting how and **** people use. Since the introduction of 3d touch, I have never used it. I have hd several iPhones in the last 4 years and am using Xs now, but it is extremely unnatural and not intuitive for me to use 3d touch. I tried it, it does not work for me at all. I always forgot that it exists, I just do not know why I would use it. Things that are intuitive come naturally. I have heard that for many people it is great. I just never got to understand it and appreciate it. Useless for me.
I use my iPhone in a very simple way. I never activated face ID, I hate this idea. I do not have a password, all is easy. The only thing I would love to be added again is the touch id. That is all. But then there are so many people with so many ideas and needs.

Four years after 3D Touch debuted on the iPhone 6s, the pressure-sensitive feature appears to be on the chopping block.

Last week, in a research note shared with MacRumors, a team of Barclays analysts "confirmed" that 3D Touch "will be eliminated" in all 2019 iPhones, as they predicted back in August 2018. The analysts gathered this information from Apple suppliers following a trip to Asia earlier this month.

This isn't the first time we've heard this rumor. The Wall Street Journal said the same thing back in January.

Apple already replaced 3D Touch with Haptic Touch on the iPhone XR in order to achieve a nearly edge-to-edge LCD on the device, and it is likely the feature will be expanded to all 2019 iPhones. Haptic Touch is simply a marketing name for a long press combined with haptic feedback from the Taptic Engine.

It's unclear why Apple would remove 3D Touch from the next-generation iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, since Apple has already proven that it can integrate the feature into edge-to-edge OLED displays without issue.

Haptic Touch on the iPhone XR works in fewer places than 3D Touch, including the flashlight and camera shortcuts on the lock screen, in Control Center to view hidden toggles, and to expand notifications. Haptic Touch does not support Quick Actions app menus or Peek and Pop for previewing content.

3D Touch features: Quick Actions on left, Peek and Pop on right

Perhaps we'll see some hints that 3D Touch is going away entirely in iOS 13, which Apple is expected to unveil at its WWDC 2019 keynote next Monday. That should be followed by new iPhones in September as usual.

You can open in a new tab... you have slide up when the page comes up in the “peek” window and the “Open in New Tab” option is there... I use that all the time in safari. Another reason I would hate to lose 3D Touch. Haptic touch doesn’t allow you to do that in its current form
I know about that. I can do that too with long tap. It’s not any quicker. What I meant is sort of a secondary tap for a different action. Instant.

Dear Apple: Please make your minds. FIrst, it was Touch ID. Hey, for the most part it worked, so it seemed. Then comes 3D Touch (only available on the latest models). Well, here we go again -- Haptic Touch, available only on the most recent (unannounced) iPhones, iPads, what the hell iDevice. Some are available on some iDevices, others are not -- even tnough all are using the latest iOS.
Please, make up your mind. What's it going to be? Frankly, I have found Touch ID to be dependable and reliable AND (most i importantly) F A M I L I A R.
Please, bring back Touch ID. It just works. Oh. but oh my God, it means bringing back that popular "Home" button. Oh, we can't have that! Apple reviving a usable feature that it once abadoned?
Can the headphone jack be far behind?
One can only hope.

I am the opposite. Face ID >> Touch ID.

And I use 3D Touch daily. I hope Apple presents some nice alternative in iOS13, if they are getting rid of it.

I use 3D Touch to control the pressure of brush on bunch of paint apps. The pressure level can not be replaced by Haptic touch.

So, Unless some like support for Pencil is introduced alongside the removal of 3D Touch, I will try to keep my 8+ for as long possible.

This is a feature mostly everyone on here calls a gimmick but I love using. I hope they keep a variation of it on the new iPhone.
It would be terrible if they took out the ability to use the keyboard as a trackpad.

I've never gotten the hang of 3D touch. I generally forget that its there, unless I trigger it accidentally. It seems like it would be a great extra (figurative) dimension to the UI, but I never found it well implemented or well indicated. That's a problem with a lot of the UI gestures in iOS these days-- there's no way to know they're there unless you stumble upon them or are told where to look.

One thing that makes me nuts is that 3D touch on a link in Safari is no different than tapping it, but if I want to open it in a different tab I need to long press it and then choose a menu option. Tapping a link should open it, firm pressing it brings up a preview, and pressing all the way through should open it in a new tab.

Also, 3D pressing on icons on the home screen should enable me to move them.

Hi, I’m Simon. Now you do! :D

Getting rid of the notch in favour of under-screen Touch ID is the only reason I’d even consider dropping 3D Touch, but we all know that’s not gonna happen any time soon.

Ok I have to update my statement

Fully agree to your notch statement

A little pitiful for 3D Touch

Now get rid of that Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro!

Really won't miss it. Don't miss it all on my XR, long-pressing works as well in most instances and it was never clear where 3D Touch would and wouldn't work... it was mostly a guessing game. In all honesty, the biggest feature I enjoyed about the 3D Touch was pressing firmly on the keyboard to get a mouse-like cursor. That is still present on the XR by long-pressing the space bar.

It wasn't a bad feature, but was mostly a novelty.
Long pressing the space bar and pressing anywhere in the keyboard I feel are two totally different things. I wouldn’t like the feature nearly as well if I had to find a specific spot to push down on each time. Hope they stick with the whole keyboard for the cursor.

As soon as September 2020 if this rumour is to be believed... its not the first one we've gotten suggesting they want to bring it back either.

It is just trade offs.

The Taptic Engine is a great piece of engineering. The only problem is we not shrink it any further, it is taking valuable internal space for something that brings very little value to majority. Most people would prefer to have Haptic Touch and Bigger Battery than 3D Touch with less battery.

As someone who's using an X and a Xr I can say that haptic touch and 3d touch really aren't that different and in real-use you're not gonna notice the difference between it. While still maintaining the functionality.

I'm hoping this change is "invisible" because I use 3D Touch all the time. Also hoping we "get something" for it, like longer battery life.

I never understand this, the iPhone is a solid 1-day phone, it's not going to be a 2-day phone (no normal smartphone at the moment is and can't be without making it much thicker and more importantly heavier) so why would you want more battery when it's still not changing the charge every night principle?

I really don't care if I end the day with 10 or 30% and it won't change anything.

I wouldn't mind if the Haptic Touch was as fast as 3D Touch. It's just too slow for me. With 3D Touch i can quickly turn on the flashlight and other things, with haptic touch on XR it's taking too long. So if they want to remove it, then at least make 3 options - slow, normal and fast with fast being as fast as 3D Touch
Sadly this cannot happen, as 3D Touch can be as fast as a normal tap, and haptic touch just detects long taps. Haptic touch is and always will be inferior. Removing it is just stupid.

After activating that curser, an additional nudge highlights words and can be dragged over any of the text, while pressing it a third time toggles the highlight functionality on and off.

I think there is going to be a greater loss of functionality than people really even realize. Apparently most consumers can’t figure these things out on their own though.

This won’t be the first time I’ve been burned by Apple’s relentless march forward. I wonder how many people remember Front Row.

This is what most people don’t seem to get. They don’t do the same thing, nor can they. 3D Touch is dedicated to certain features, as is long press. One can’t replace the other, full stop. All we’re losing is functionality.

ALL android phones have had the long press/haptic feedback feature like... FOREVER!!!! Apple instead of innovating keeps removing features to increase their margins while also raising prices. Home button and fingerprint sensor? GONE! Headphone jack? GONE! 3D touch? GONE! "We can save $2/phone if we just remove them. Nobody will notice. More profits for us (Tim Cook/Apple) if we can also jack up the price by $100/phone. Nobody will notice..." LOL
Glad I dumped my iphone for Android and put an end to this greedy insanity. Pixel 3a for me at $299 ($399-$100 credit) for the next 3 years. After all, they keep telling us that nobody at Apple will notice as their unit sales plummet. Or will they?

I hate heptic touch sooo much. Especially when i want to move the music slider on the lock screen to certain time. I can NEVER set it to desired time since i have to first press that crap really hard, slide it to desired time, and when i let go of it, the slider moves 30 seconds up or down because when you lift your finger, you always make a small "move", which phone registers as if you moved the slider a bit. ITS A NIGHTMARE!

The only thing i like about it is for opening the camera from lock screen. Other than that its total crapfest.

You and me both. Might upgrade to a used XS Max at some point. Not buying another Apple phone without 3D Touch.
