If Apple ever became serious, the Mac Pro would come with a mechanical (real) keyboard and a set of keycaps just for FCPX.

<head explodes>

Though I would not mind the touch bar coming to a stand alone keyboard.

Really though all I want is a number pad on the wireless keyboard. how freaking hard can that be? Are they intentionally trying to make productive work more difficult?

I always use the left side for my command keys and having them duplicated on the right (or duplicated at all) never made sense to me.

Try hanging out with a lefthanded individual. On a regular computer keyboard I use the mouse with my left hand and the CTRL etc keys with my right. For years it pained me to have to use CTRL-X,C and V with my left, taking my hand off the mouse, until the glorious day when I learned that CTRL-Delete, CTRL-Insert, and Shift-Insert are the lefty equivalents.

I'm sorry...what was this thread about again? :(

Surely they could put two letter-sized keys where Caps Lock is -- one for emoji and one for caps -- rather than eliminate a button that many find useful...

Share button: NO FRIGGIN WAY. Hate the idea.
System Find: OK
Emoji button: CUTE but don't replace Caps Lock. Find a new place for it. Look a context sensitive touch bar.

Well, this looks like it sucks, and not a boon for productivity, which is what I'd aim the keyboard at, but I don't see the user feedback that Apple sees so I'll reserve my opinion until we see the actual product.

History repeats itself!

What history? The world's top language is written in the logical conclusion to emojis:

Left handed, sure, but I'm right handed and use the right side cmd-option-control keys frequently too. It's just easier to press some key combinations with one hand.

As for a dedicated emoji key? Well, if someone is going to use emojis so much that they need a dedicated key, I probably won't be having a long conversation with them.

Yes, because spelling is just too hard.

If they replaced all the keys with emoji, you'd have a point. It's almost like it's just one key replacing one that's barely used.

You seem like a really unpleasant person if you judge people by their emoji use.

I was going to say it was a mistake to cater to the younger generation because they're still living in their parents basement. But, I guess they have money for this crap because they are!

Wait until you see the animated emojis of iOS 11! :p
ohhhh
emmm
geeee

Wait, my Apple Watch already has those, lol, but they're not unicode.

What would be interesting is if you could make your own emoji out of unicode "pieces" that stack and save them to a custom slot. Some unicode emojis work like that already—they combine two emojis to render the new one. I know people like to joke about emojis, but there is some interesting science fiction out there that I've read before (can't remember what) where in the future they have picture based language that can be transmitted wirelessly or projected above their head. This is like a new, somewhat universal language being formed. It's interesting, even if I don't particularly care for it very much being an occasional emoji user.

Apple recently filed a patent application containing drawings of a Smart Keyboard with "Share" and "Emoji" keys, and a key that can be used to both search and invoke Siri, suggesting it may be exploring a new version of the iPad Pro accessory to be sold alongside next-generation models.

The drawings show that pressing the "Share" key would bring up a share sheet on the iPad Pro with options to share through apps such as Facebook, Mail, and Messages. There is no description of how the "Emoji" key would function, but pressing it would presumably bring up the on-screen Emoji keyboard on the iPad Pro.

The current Smart Keyboard already has a globe key in the bottom left corner that can bring up the on-screen Emoji keyboard, but this key is not visualized in the patent drawings. There is a non-existent "Fn" key in its place.

The third key, labeled with a magnifying glass, would serve multiple purposes. A single press, for example, could bring up a search field for searching within apps. A double press could bring up shortcuts for Messages, Photos, Calendar, Camera, Notes, Settings, and other apps. Long-pressing the key would invoke Siri.

Since this is not a design patent, Apple's drawings are not entirely accurate, but rather just basic visualizations. The "Share" key is located where the right-side Command and Option keys would normally be, for example, while the "Emoji" key is included in lieu of Caps Lock, which is an essential key.

Nevertheless, we roughed up a quick mockup of what the new Smart Keyboard could look like based on the same layout of the new keys as Apple's drawings.

Apple is rumored to launch a trio of new iPads as early as March, but possibly not until later this year, including an all-new 10-inch range iPad Pro with an edge-to-edge display. The other models are expected to be updated 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with faster A10X processors.

A so-called "Smart Keyboard 2" could accompany the new iPads and perhaps the so-called "Apple Pencil 2" rumored to launch this year.

The current Smart Keyboard was released in November 2015 and costs $149 and $169 for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro respectively. International versions such as British English, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Italian, German, Swedish, French, and Arabic were released in August 2016.

Is this idea in conjunction with Playskool, Kenner, or Mattel?

Wonderful, cater to the younger generation, they are our future and communicate with symbols and emojis. Leave the rest of us real computer users behind.

Cavemen/women/people (PC) ;), used symbols and drawings to communicate and express ideas on walls, rocks, structures. Think of it this was we are coming full circle to the dawning of mankind with emojis :p:D

Not buying it.

Things change with time and the keyboard is due for a make over.

Its been like ...forever.

They essentially eliminated the Function & Escape Keys on their new Mac Book Amature so who's to say they won't eliminate Caps Lock & Delete from future products...

Next up a giant TouchPad for finger and hand paintings. Future looks exciting people. /s
