I think a double press on "shift" could enable caps lock, so I don't see the problem with that.

The Caps lock on every other English keyboard in the world is in that position for a reason, we all know where it is, it becomes muscle memeory to enable caps lock and I'm sure a touch typist would explode if they kept enabling emojis.

This is just going to make people angry. Plus it seems to show that, even more than we already knew the iPad isn't and probably won't be a heavy duty kind of thing. Emojis and email.

Since this is not a design patent, Apple's drawings are not entirely accurate, but rather just basic visualizations. There's no way that "Caps Lock" and "Delete" would not be included.

same way that the escape key was included in the touchbar macbook pros?

at this point, I'm not sure with Apple anymore. They keep trying to do these "small" changes thinking they're revolutionary, but end up being bizarre and more of a hassle to deal with.

I honestly wouldn't put it past Apple to replace the CAPS LOCK key with something like Emoji's. I can hear Schiller now just stating something like it's courageous to get rid of, and redundant because people can just hold the SHIFT key instead.

Apple... turning computers into toys for 10 years running !! This is only a stop gap to Ive's dream of NO keyboard and Siri only on all devices.

Party in Redmond tonight. Apple is quickly running out of feet to shoot themselves in.

A shortcut to enable/disable emoji is really useful when you have 3 languages on your keyboard...

Except that Multiple presses of Shift can be used for other things. for example, in windows, pressing SHIFT 5 times will enable "STICKY KEY" functionality

or if you're in games. and you've quickly pressed shift multiple times (FPS' use shift for run/walk). you don't want it in Caps lock mode.

the US QWERTY keyboard layout has been around for decades in it's particular form because it's turned out to be a very easy to learn, and useful.

changing anything. moving anything. Removing anything and replacing it with something else, needs to be done extremely carefully.

Who needs to press the caps lock key to yell in all caps when you can use an emoji

/s

Siri would be pretty useful as a key. I wish there was a function row too for volume and brightness.

double clicking the Shift key invokes caps lock doesn't it?

LOL "Emoji" key/button, why do you all put up with this ?
Vote with wallets people. Do not encourage them, stop it.

They think you are stupid, prove them wrong.

Why doesnt the @ sign get a key of its own? We use itr more than most of the other ones that have independent keys anyway...

Do you realise it's the SMART keyboard not the magic keyboard, this is going to be used on iPad only...

You'll live! Trust me

NOBODY cares about emojis, Apple!

If that were true, this would not be up for patent.

If there is an opportunity to make a buck, Apple's going to do it.
[doublepost=1487184963][/doublepost]What would be intriguing to me would be a Smart Keyboard that would not only bring a TouchBar to the iPad, but MacOS functionality to an iPad through adding the keyboard.

Perhaps an additional A1*X processor and/or low-powered Intel embedded in the keyboard that would integrate touch functionality and meld iOS/MacOS flawlessly and into professional workflows...that could be "magic."

Why not just replace all the keys with emoji's and have a text shortcut key?
Apple : Think Dumb

Wonderful, cater to the younger generation, they are our future and communicate with symbols and emojis. Leave the rest of us real computer users behind.

You think your generation are the "real computer users"? Wait until the younger generation, digital natives, are your age.

I'll be honest....I more excited there will be a HOME button on the keyboard. What a dumb oversight for the first keyboard.

Apple recently filed a patent application containing drawings of a Smart Keyboard with "Share" and "Emoji" keys, and a key that can be used to both search and invoke Siri, suggesting it may be exploring a new version of the iPad Pro accessory to be sold alongside next-generation models.

The drawings show that pressing the "Share" key would bring up a share sheet on the iPad Pro with options to share through apps such as Facebook, Mail, and Messages. There is no description of how the "Emoji" key would function, but pressing it would presumably bring up the on-screen Emoji keyboard on the iPad Pro.

The current Smart Keyboard already has a globe key in the bottom left corner that can bring up the on-screen Emoji keyboard, but this key is not visualized in the patent drawings. There is a non-existent "Fn" key in its place.

The third key, labeled with a magnifying glass, would serve multiple purposes. A single press, for example, could bring up a search field for searching within apps. A double press could bring up shortcuts for Messages, Photos, Calendar, Camera, Notes, Settings, and other apps. Long-pressing the key would invoke Siri.

Since this is not a design patent, Apple's drawings are not entirely accurate, but rather just basic visualizations. The "Share" key is located where the right-side Command and Option keys would normally be, for example, while the "Emoji" key is included in lieu of Caps Lock, which is an essential key.

Nevertheless, we roughed up a quick mockup of what the new Smart Keyboard could look like based on the same layout of the new keys as Apple's drawings.

Apple is rumored to launch a trio of new iPads as early as March, but possibly not until later this year, including an all-new 10-inch range iPad Pro with an edge-to-edge display. The other models are expected to be updated 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with faster A10X processors.

A so-called "Smart Keyboard 2" could accompany the new iPads and perhaps the so-called "Apple Pencil 2" rumored to launch this year.

The current Smart Keyboard was released in November 2015 and costs $149 and $169 for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro respectively. International versions such as British English, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Italian, German, Swedish, French, and Arabic were released in August 2016.

They should make extra room for dedicated emoji keys by deleting all those useless "letters" and "numbers".
