After a rather boring day at work, thank you all for the laughs. I really liked the fake photo. I mean sure, we might have missed it but the people there, taking the pictures couldn't just read it! Wouldn't need much of a zoom lens to capture that.

Anyway, I'm not going to poo poo the G5 sayers. Yes, it would be nice and on christmas eve we all hope Santa has filled our entire wish list. Well, old St. Steve will drop a bag of goodies but he always misses one item on your list. Don't be surprised if there are no new PB's or if they are just G4's.

I'm just curions, how many of you are going to wait now for the G5 PB? Seriously. In June/July I was willing and ready to buy a new updated G4 PB. Figured if announced then I should have it with in a month and get a good 10-12 months use before a G5 announce. After hearing several reasons (rumors) why the PBs were delayed I now have to question that decision. Most people were saying the reason was due to supply of chips from Moto. So what are the odds they can now meet the pent up demand IF the powerbooks are updated? Add on top of that rumors that Moto was having problems with heat issues on higher speed G4s and now you have to ask are these ones (if announced) going to be problematic? IF there was no G5 and IF there was no major pent up demand, I would say Apple would ensure no heat issues. But with the G5 right around the corner and the need to stop losing money due to no supply of laptops, Apple and Moto might have rushed things.

All that considered, what if new PB don't start shipping until Nov/Dec? Then you could be only 3-6 months away (speculation I know) from a G5 Powerbook. My point is where as two months ago I was ready to buy, now I may wait.

The debate time for G5 powerbook is just over. it's time to dream. this is what make earth so miserable place too live, when someone are happy there is alway a big guy who just cannot accept to that.

So KEEP ON SMILLING:D

[EDIT] please do not reply to debate on it

Missing Monitors ...

The only monitors I see are one 20" at a non-Apple booth and a few in picture DSC00801. It appears to be the backs of the 23" monitors.

Anyone else see this?

Don't get me wrong - I would love to see a G5 PB. And yes, it is more pschological than anything about speed. I just hate the idea of plunking down $2000-$3000 for a laptop w/a chip that is at its end of life. If a G5 PB is announced, I am buying one first thing.

Aha! But if enough people wait, there won't be any pent-up demand, so you can get one almost immediately.

Aha! But if you can get one almost immediately, there WILL be pent-up demand!

It's a paradox! Help me!

New PowerBooks are certainty

The following is my observations:
From Image DSC00801.JPG,E38S8575.JPG and E38S8573.JPG.
We can see that the black-sheet covered ad. is in exact front of the stage where Steve will give the Keynote. So this must be something noteworthy! What could it be? They didn't hide the new OS ad. iMac and G5s are all around the expo. No other options could be possibly fit that in. Don't tell me that's a Tablet Mac, or Mac-based PDA ;)

I would not discredit the 750GX (? the newest 750 from IBM - It think its the GX) either. It could be a good stop gap until the G5s systems are ready. It has high clock rate, Altivec, lots of cache, good thermal characteristics, and a 200MHz bus. It should beat out a 7455b.

Or maybe Apple will wait until the G5 PBs are ready and release the 750GX in the iBooks.

It's so amazing how much i can be nervous about the keynote.

I'm a pc user/switcher and i never been so excited about new product in pc world, i'm shaking and i'm sure i'll have sleeping problems this night ... and i LOVE it.

pretty sure the stevenote will take place in an auditorium instead of in the middle of an open convention floor. bad acoustics you know?

Is it just me, or are there laptops next to every G5? They all seem aluminum, and really thin, like thinner than the 12"er is now. What do you guys say?

::Edit::
Forgot to say that I'm not sure if this is an Apple booth... those look like audio mixers infront of every machine... but why he hell mix audio with a lowly G4...? Are these the new 15" PBs? They look too small to be the 17" model.

I'm sure they're mixing boards of some kind and i don't know what picture you're looking at, but those boxy looking aluminum jobs sitting next to those screens aren't G4's, they're G5's

( possibly for 'garage band'? :D )

the keynote is at a completely different location at porte de maillot. (the expo is at porte de versailles)

the area with the chairs is the classic european product showcase area i.e: apple expo, mac expo uk, etc...

That's funny. You should do a "Switch" story for Apple.

In the boxes you will find....

.... new displays. Aluminum cased displays, a perfect partner for any G5. Very thin and very light. 30 inches in some cases. No Panthers are to be found in these boxes but they will be released into the wild on October 25th. Also in the works are re-vamped XServes with hearts of G5, very nice indeed. Va. Tech. would like to have had those instead of regular G5s, they would have saved 1000's of square feet server room real estate - or have they got them already??????????

looks to me like the only really significant thing about those photos is the fact that there are no PowerBooks on display... or at least no 15" & 17" models.

one things for sure... if there aren't new PowerBooks of some sort... at least an updated 15" model, there's going to be alot of very unhappy people. myself included.

Tough call. I'm not sure.

I'm just curions, how many of you are going to wait now for the G5 PB? Seriously.

I'm snatching up whatever is out next. I've been waiting to switch for soooo long.. about 6 months now. F' M$ from here on out.

I was talking about the laptops. I'm wondering why you would do mixing on a G4 laptop if a (dual) G5 tower is sitting next to you.

I'm personally hoping for G5 laptops tomorrow, but even if they don't come, I'll buy whatever does. It's sure to be a screaming fast machine, and I could use one right now... College and all... Hey, does anybody know how good an iSight is at taking pictures of objects that are, oh, say 10m (~20ft) away? I'm thinking of taking pictures of notes instead of drawing pictures... probably a whole lot easier if it iSight can do it.

It definitely has the aluminum, the only question is whether it is the 17" or the 15.x.

I would have to think it's the 17" now because why would the new 15" PBs be on display BEFORE they were announced? That would take a little bit of the spotlight off of Steve-o eh?

That's definetly the 17" Powerbook.

The monitor below it is the 23" cinema display. A 15" next to it would look much smaller. I belive there is an iBook to the right of it aswell.

These PBs are long overdue. If and most likely, they are G4s, they better be available immediatly. A G5 Powerbook I can wait a few months for it to ship.
:p

Here's my one thing about people complaining about the G5 ship date. You say "why would Apple release a product and not ship it immediately?" Simple.

Where did Apple release the G5? The WWD(eveloper)C. Basically, as I see it (which may not be right), Steve wanted to tell the developers that there's a new chip out there, and it's going to be used a lot more. You couldn't have the seminars to talk about optimization for the G5 if that processor didn't exist. So it's announced, but people are told not to expect it to START shipping til late August. Seems to me that Apple has been quite on target for this one. If the PowerBook is released with a G5, I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit to see immediate availability, since no other computer would use the processors at the projected clock speeds.
