nothing.

when the iMac first debuted jobs mentioned that the "i" stood for internet, but it was rarely (if ever?) mentioned in promotional materials. since that time it has become, for lack of a better term, a branding element.

[edit]
i should say the i was never explicitly mentioned as standing for the internet, but the original commercials focused on the iMac's ease of connecting to the internet. the whole "there is no step 3" thing.

Really? I always just took the "i" as a ownership thing.

I'm really hoping for a mac mini dvr - it would be so nice to be able to record a show and transfer it to your ipod via a 10/100 connection instead of tivo's 1991 usb 1 support. Not to mention a sweet optical out - talk about removing all the clutter around a tv. If they could only figure out a way to make it play xbox 360 games!!! Microsoft failed at making a product with longer than a 2 month shelf period, give it a try apple!!!!

I would also like to see a release for a Universal Binary for Flip4Mac today. Anyone who has an imac or macbook right now is really streatching for this if you visit almost any video sight. I've tried using F4M/QT in rosetta and even with my dual 20" & 2gigs of ram its still slow.

I'd also love to see a UB for Firefox that supports all the extensions. Camino is meh - camitools is alright but does a pathetic job at blocking ads. And until we get a UB for Flip4Mac you cant watch videos. But I doubt Jobs would advertise Firefox hehe.

Finally I love the idea of a PDA / iPod - what would be really sweet is if apple could make it run pocketpc apps - like rosetta.

Oh well I'll be here anxiously awaiting.

Why are the iPod Boombox and Intel Mini the most likely products? Because the've been floating around as rumors for a while? Is there any new info pointing to these?

But is there any solid reason to expect a PVR-Mini? I know, I konw, just wait a few hours and all will be revealed... I've got tons of work to do, so hopefully the day will go fast (not :( )

The biggest evidence for the mini is the fact that the G4 version has been EOL'd, they've stopped making it and you can no longer order it in quantity. There also have been sources that say intel manufacturing has already ramped up. I don't think there's any evidence for DVR mini. AI hasn't predicted it, and I think it's less likely than a basic mini with frontrow.

I don't think there's much evidence for the iPod "boombox" beyond just rumors and speculation.

But 99% of us aren't happy with AAC downloads.

WOW. You're qualified to speak on behalf of 99% of the population? That's pretty amazing. Considering they've sold a billion of them, I think a LOT more than 1% are OK with the current AAC.

Does anyone seriously think that Apple can deliver a Mac Mini with the hardware capable of flawlessly handling DVR type functions for under $1000 AND keep the form factor as small as the current mini? This has to be a whole new product from the ground up.

Rumor has it. The New Intel Mac Mini will include a Screen and Keyboard. Around $600.

[...] Are you serious though? Sarcasm often gets lost in cyber-translation.

I don't see how it can include a keyboard and screen at that price.

I don't see how it can stay "mini" and include a screen.

I also don't see how someone would want to use a 7.5" square LCD display as their main display.

UK Apple Store has been unavailable since sometime around 12:00 GMT (a full six hours ahead of the Cupertino announcements). Hmmmm... does this point towards a more substantial overhaul than in previous announcements? Give me Dual Core MacBook. Gimme, gimme, gimme. :p

UK is up ;)

Agree on the needed bandwidth for getting HDD and lossless audio. But 99% of us aren't happy with AAC downloads. Some of them sound good, others not good.

Then again I have a modded Sony 777ES SACD player. On my NHT Xd system one colleague said, everything should be on SACD. It's that good.

Okay so today, let's get a mac mini intel server with DVI capability and improved audio out options.

Then we move one step closer to delivering the content the way it should.

I think you got that reversed.. 99% are happy with AAC downloads
only a small % of audiophiles arent happy

Oh noooooooo!

more iPod/iTunes crap. this is a press event. the press couldn't care less about Macs. the invite was sent out from the iPod/iTunes team. zzzzzzzzzzzz.

If you are correct about the invite then you would be right that there's no hardware re: no new intel mac mini, no new dvi and audio out port and nothing to be happy about. :(

Thanks for popping the ballon early.

[...] Moral of the story...
Don't trust Apple with proprietary interface technology.

I'd say "don't trust any proprietary interface technology"... That's one of the reason I've finally switched to Apple (along with OS X): no more custom Apple-only hardware (only a matter of driver support now).

Yes Steve said in one of his Keynotes when he went from iCEO to CEO, that he remained the iCEO because the internet was so important to him and Apple ;)

Guys, guys! I will be up in the mountains at the time shooting some photography and probably will miss the event entirely! If only I had a device that I could write notes on to send to here with messages like "status x." Or maybe this device could operate on 3G networks and I could just read the webpage on the full version of Explorer, hoping I dont get too many popups on something that size.....
Hey, I gotta run, I need to write these ideas down quick. A name, a name! It would be constantly changing and small enough that it would be like delicate origami! Oh man, I'm a genius, I need to call Paul and let him in on this. Guys I'll have a press conference later tonight. Dont buy the first one, it wont be out to next Christmas as a Developer betaBETA test. I finally have an iPod killer!

HAHAHAHAHA nice one!

software!!!!

let it be new fabulous software....

3d program from pixar
new business software
create your own ringtone software
sell your itune music via itunes software

please Steve, rock us with new fabulous software that only apple fans can love and use

What about an Apple - Sony PS3 relationship?

What if apple teamed up with sony and used the ps3 as a media extender, just as the xbox 360 is for microsoft?

You're wrong

WOW. You're qualified to speak on behalf of 99% of the population? That's pretty amazing. Considering they've sold a billion of them, I think a LOT more than 1% are OK with the current AAC.[/QUOTE]

The original comment was that 99% of people are happy with AAC downloads.
I merely pointed out that I'm not. I'm completely comfortable that there is out there in the land of audophilia more than 1.000000001% who agree that AAC downloads should be improved.

So, I speak for all of them, yeah. :D

Perhaps not, but I'd be happy just with an intel mac mini as I've been holding off buying one for 9 months now! Still, why should it be that complex to take in a video stream whilst outputting another? If you are running WoW at the same time you may have issues but what do you want out of a DVR?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem like hi-fi and the default codecs used to download songs off of iTunes go together.

That's why I like to rip my own hi rate music, or even rip to lossless.

Can iTunes go lossless? Would the record industry accept that?

Another question is, would people really want to download 30MB music files? On the other hand, it would really push manufacturers to deliver on the next-generation "perpendicular writing" hard drives.

After a week of reading page after glorious page of rumors, I've decided this:

I have no clue, no idea, of what is going to be announced today!

None of us do. I have my wish list, but I'm hoping for something truly "new" - and not simple updates.

Considering that my cable company has a 180MB hard drive in their STB, I think it's possible. But the question is can they handle both standard definition and high definition material? That I don't know.

I added a 500GB external SATA drive to the cable company's dvr box. That makes a huge difference in recording and saving stuff.

I would expect if Apple wants to go this route, they could do it with their current form factor. Externals would permit people to go with much larger storage options.

I guess we don't have too long to wait. :p

If you mean this post from last month, it was not deleted. By "release in April" did you mean announced in April or first shipping in April?

I'm surprised Apple still hasn't added a camera to iPod because with any mobile phone you get MP3 capabilties and a camera.

I think a nice 2.0 Megapixel Camera and a radio funtion would be a very nice addition to the "top of the line" iPods out there.

If they can put an iSight into the top border of a paper-thin laptop display, then surely they can find room for it in an iPod! It would also fit with iLife. But what else is there in iLive? iMovie!

If the iPod has an iSight, and a hard disk... Why not make it one of the first inexpensive H.264 camcorder too? And widescreen!

iPod + video widescreen/touchscreen + PDA (Mail, Web, iCal with Wi-Fi built-in) + camera + camcorder!
