I laud Apple’s desire to protect the environment. Making the iPhone box smaller is a good thing, and reducing unused charger bricks is a good thing. BUT if the environment were all that they were concerned about, then they can ask customers when buying an iPhone IF they want a charger, and include a charger in a smaller separate box for free, thus reducing the shipping volume all the same. It’s charging for the charger many will need that’s unacceptable, and I’m glad Brazil’s held them to account for that.

I agree with you but at the same time, if people are given an option to get anything for free they will most likely take it even if they don't really need it and in the end, it would defeat the purpose.

They shouldn't even include tires because most people already have tires from their previous car. This would help the environment.
If you go to the dealership to look at the car, and they tell you, the car comes without tires...and you buy the car anyway...then you can't cry after the fact that the dealership screwed you out of the tires.

claims that it deliberately slows down older phones with iOS updates

i actually thought this too until i got a (new) replacement iphone x, which to my surprise was markedly faster than the previous one i had been using for several years...

from what ive read, it seems like its the ssd overtime wearing/slowing down that causes the "slowness"...

(not to defend apple or anything, just something i noticed)

Honestly, I don’t really care it’s not a sticking point for me personally. I have at least 10 different usb-a cables and 4 5w bricks and 3 12 watt chargers.

My own take is based on an analogy in the car world. My son bought a new car and the dealer didn’t even fill up the car with a tank of gas. (Not their policy they said)

Bottom line, you gotta know what you buying and what you’re getting for your money. The charger was never free anyway, you paid for it with the price of the phone. (And for what it’s worth I do believe there is a positive environmental impact)
So once again i haven’t bought any of these since iPhone XS Max which did come with the charger brick. Car analogies in general won’t work here because it’s a different world, but if you insist, it’d be like Tesla changing their port to whatever Volt uses and not including the charger cable with the new model. Like yes there are plenty of Volt cables out there but many happy-path owners like me would have to purchase it separately.

If they had a few years (or even one) where they sold iPhones with USBC cables, we wouldn’t be in here complaining about this. But they don’t get to just change the entire cable port AND not include the brick in the same year, at the same time. Not without lawsuits and investigations and complaints.

Anyway it’s clear you disagree with me on this so this will probably have to go the usual “agree to disagree” route. Apple’s decision here didn’t impact you but it impacted many many others, evidently. It’s not that I’m super mad I gotta buy a 20 dollar thing on top of my 1000 dollar thing - it’s that the motivation behind this is purely financially driven and hurts many consumers.

Apple has been slapped with a near $2 million fine in the Brazilian state of São Paulo over violations of the Consumer Law Code due to the lack of a charger in the box for newer iPhones, Brazilian tech news outlet Tilt reports.

iphone-11-pro-charger.jpg

Procon-SP, São Paulo's consumer protection agency, decided to fine Apple following intense scrutiny over the decision to remove the power adapter from the boxes of iPhones. With the iPhone 12, Apple removed the power adapter from the box, saying that doing so will reduce carbon emissions and the use of rare-earth metals.

In December, the Brazilian agency informed Apple that selling an iPhone in the country without a charger in the box is a violation of the Consumer Defense Code. Apple responded to the agency's concerns by saying that most customers already have spare adapters and that providing another one in the box is unneeded.

Fernando Capez, Procon-SP's executive director, offered a stern warning to Apple following the fine, saying that it needs to respect and understand Brazilian consumer law and institutions. Alongside the lack of a charger, Apple is also being fined for misleading customers about the water resistance in iPhones.

Since the iPhone 7, iPhones have been water-resistant to different specifications. The more recent iPhone 12 series, for example, is certified for water submersion of up to 6 meters for as long as 30 minutes.

Procon-SP claims that Apple refused to repair devices for customers who had suffered water damage with their "water-resistant" iPhones, even though they're under warranty. Other charges brought forward to Apple are claims that it deliberately slows down older phones with iOS updates to encourage customers to purchase newer models.

Apple will have a chance to appeal to the $2 million fine. We've reached out to Apple for comment and will update this article if we hear back.

$2 Million penalty for Apple is like sneezing once with one nostril only. The penalty should be much more severe. If Apple is so environmentally conscious, why not let the customer make the decision? Just ask if they wish to receive a charger with their new Iphone..... free of charge.

I wonder how these penalties work. Like, if Apple decides to pay it and just carry on, are they liable to get fined again at a later date? Because if so, why would any rich corporation follow any rule ever? I feel like these fines need to be a percentage of revenue or something more severe like blocking sales (not in this particular case necessarily, I mean just in general)

100%, Anker’s stuff is much higher quality and often at a fraction of the price. That’s the route I’d go whenever I get an iPhone 13
I like most of what they make, except for their Bluetooth-enabled headphones. They may or may not connect. We've had a lot of returns.

Ah yeah true enough, I had some rocky experience there. Generally I’ll never buy any wireless headphones for under 150, they’re just never gonna be that good

$2 million seems like nothing to Apple. Not to say they will just pay it, but I doubt this will change anything. The worst case scenario would be Brazil customer enjoy higher iPhone prices because of a charger. $100 more maybe?
People sometimes criticise Apple is away from reality. Well, it’s not just Apple who are away from reality, it’s also all of their millions of hardcore fans. So I’d say removing charger is not entirely apple’s own “fault”.

The quantification of the “many, many others” is a sticking point for me. It this unidentified universe of mythical impacted customers that can’t seem to be quantified that makes me disagree with the objections of this. While I know there are impacted customers, I guess I’m waiting for someone to really quantify the overall impact….customers, dollars, environment. Nobody really can is my opinion.

Nobody really can is correct. I’m mostly basing that statement on just how much complaining about it I’ve seen in the form of forum posts, lawsuits, investigations, etc. It could very well be a loud minority and that’s obviously the best case scenario but I’m just throwing my 2c into the bucket as always. If it causes change, great. If it doesn’t, then I’ll suck it up and get the charger brick because, no, for the last time, I’m not getting an android phone LOL

Nobody in this thread would be laughing if the fine was in the high nine digits or more. Leave it to a bunch of losers to laugh about something serious simply because it doesn’t affect Apple’s bottom line. If it did affect them we’d have the usual sheep screaming “injustice” and “greedy” government.

If they're including the type C cable, they need to include the power brick that supports it, whatever the cost to them, to the countries where it's necessary and optionally, to those in other countries.

Apple should not be deciding everything for everyone.
So then either include a charger in a new sku or provide one separately. With price TBD. (Apple will not give these away)

Exactly...apple shouldn't be deciding that every iphone owner needs a new charger brick. Thank god they stopped including them in the box so the consumer can decide whether they need to purchase one or not.

I’ve owned probably like 20 Android phones and 10 different iPhones in the last 5 years and I still have never had a single USB C brick in my house because I never purchased an iPad or any other apple product with it.
You don't need a USB-C charger. Take a USB-A charger with the cable from an iPhone 5 and it works.

More countries should follow suit. I would pick a charger over the included apple stickers.

I always sell my old phones with their charger bricks and cable, as does everyone I’ve ever dealt with on Kijiji and Marketplace.

You raise an excellent point but there are many of us that fall into the category of not having that as an option unfortunately

Best case scenario IMO. Offer the regular package with charger at the usual 999. Offer a discounted one for 959 or whatever it is without the charger. Everyone happy except for Foxconn I guess

I would guess the percentages of first time iPhone purchasers is pretty small; some of whom may be switching from a phone that already had USB C.
Visited my daughter after a long time, she had her kitchen renovated, and guess what... She now has two USB-A charge points built into the kitchen wall. No problem charging any new iPhone.
