Microsoft would disagree with you. They've been selling tablet PCs for a decade now.

What's completely flawed about your argument is that you somehow forgot that the iPad is the competition for the "other" existing tablets and in fact the iPad is the last to come to the market so if those "other" tablets couldn't make it in the first place you can forget about them stealing much of the iPad's market unless they steal the iPad's functionality and at that point they'll be nothing more than a worthless clone that's "LIKE" an iPad.

Did either of you even read the article that was quoted? I ask because it doesn't mention microsoft. Nor does it even qualify the statistic as to what is considered a tablet computer and what the marketshare for anything other than Apple vs Google.

HLdan - Flawed is believing any statistic just because you happen to like the outcome. This statistic - as I stated - is pretty meaningless on it's own. Let me know (either of you) if you find the actual source analysis from "Strategy Analytics" which this "article" was based on.

I remember the time when the Mac had almost 100% market share in the 'computers with a graphical user interface' niche. Then came Windows, and we all know where that put the Mac. And now comes Android.

Apple should be smart about this and license iOS to other tablet manufacturers. But then again, somebody in Cupertino has a huge ego and will never do it.

didn't SJ try to drive all developers out of the Mac in favor of internally developed applications? things are a bit different this time.

at this point the only people who aren't going to buy an iPad are the Apple haters and those who just want to be different. All the Android tablets coming out are more expensive than the iPad and less features

Funny how little has resulted from a decade of handheld and tablet computing initiatives at Microsoft.

*sigh*

I wasn't commenting on the article, I was commenting on your comment, specifically this:

What's the competition at this point. Right now - pretty much the only TABLET computer is the iPad. Of course they're going to have dominant marketshare.

What you said (not what the article said) is simply not true that the only tablet computer is the iPad. Microsoft has been pushing tablet computers for a decade.

Why an ipod touch

I never really understood why people want an iPod touch. It's just a small iPad or an iPhone without the phone. It can't be used as a phone and obviously won't replace an iPad....what's the point of it? ;)

No Contract, can't afford data packages anyway. Work has wifi, home has wifi, friends have wifi.

Portable. Remote login to work computer to restart/tweak analyses. Remote support to my mom. Skype. Check multiple email accounts. Fits into the budget. Take videos of kiddos and post to youtube for the grand parents in an instant. Create music. Record Music. Play games. All for 1/3 the price of an ipad with the same amount of memory as the touch I have. That's where it made sense for me.

Wow I got a lot of people replying to my post.

I've used one in an apple store in Minneapolis(closest one to me lol) and to me it seemed like I was on a huge ipod touch. I never knew it was actually that good. I might have to get one.

You realize my comment was based on the ARTICLE (which was my point). What's the competition? They speak only of Google and Apple. And Google's tablet is where?

It was a joke ;)

I remember reading last week on these forums - someone referenced this. What exactly happened back then? I'm assuming this is 80s?

I was talking about your sentence only which had none of the modifiers you've been using ever since I pointed this out.

What's amazing to me is how little traction a decade of tablets from Microsoft has gotten. People don't even think about them when talking about the subject.

What other object gets this kind of results? You could poll people about chocolate and get worse results!

roughly translated eggs to measures of satisfaction respectively...

This is only one example, but I'm guessing that just about any object where you poll people who bought what they wanted and it doesn't break before they buy a new one...

No offense intended. I just thought of this because I recently bought a new monitor and obsessively read the reviews first...

In your opinion.

I used a compaq tablet with pen computing for 3 years back in the Early 90s and loved it. I was actually very disappointed that the line was discontinued. It was perfect for me as I travelled a lot and preferred the capabilities over a laptop. So it's been more than a decade since tablets have been round.

And people don't talk about those tablets because they weren't mainstream. They weren't consumer devices. Not really. Apple's genius (which include marketing) is taking an idea and dare I say - dumbing it down - to make it consumer friendly. Which is why they excelled with the consumer but are now working to gain enterprise business - which historically has been owned by MS, Rim, etc.

I don't find it as amazing as you do I guess. But then again you are definitely much more 100 percent apple is awesome and no other company can compare than I am :)

I think that much is clear between us. I really do enjoy what Apple produces, while also noticing their bad points (but points that never seem to affect me).

They're not that hard to find really. Assuming you meant "Android" when you said "Google."

When was the "study" done. When were these products released. Were these products part of the study? Again - as I maintain - the statistic is meaningless. There's no "legend"

Honestly - reading the article - do you take the statistic as meaningful? Honestly now...

Not sure why you brought me into this conversation about Microsoft because I never mentioned MS or the like. And yes I did read the article, I stand by what I say. Sounds like you personally want to bring down the iPad's glory.

Chocolate does not satisfy me...if I don't gag, I'm like meh...all much to the consternation of women I know.

Apple never had 100% share of GUI--history points out that Windows 1.0 came out roughly 1 month before the first Mac--unless you count the Lisa which was a grossly-overpriced failure for Apple. As such, the advantage the Mac had at that specific point was its ease of use and easy graphic creation capability.

Also, why would Apple repeat a mistake that cost Apple most of its tiny hardware market share in the mid-90s? Just like with the original Windows and with Android today, licensing the OS out without some very tight limitations would fracture it to the point of unsuitability on lower-priced devices. It happened in Windows; it's happening in Android--why would Apple want to let it happen to iOS?

Well, that's true, we don't know those things, and I also understand how easy it is to be misled by a study. So we are on the same page there.

But again, I was responding to a simple statement you made in this thread asking where you can find Google tablets. Since the study was about people's intentions, and since we've been hearing about Android tablets for months, I think it's fair to show all the choices that already exist, many of which people should have heard about.

Still, you will object and say that your sentence was referring simply to the context of this study, and I'll acknowledge that.

You don't know do? A big iPod? That is what they all say but guess what it is a run away hit. It works. And when the android tablets start dropping onto the market I guess you could call the a A giant droid ir htc touch.lol.
News flash hater: the average person doesn't need a full featured laptop when all they do is what tha iPad was built for.
Apple took what the average person does on a laptop and concentrated it onto a tablet format. No viruses,no bloat and no bulls****!!

I never really understood why people want an ipad (other than image) its a big ipod touch. It can't replace a laptop, it wont obviously replace an ipod....whats the point of it?

After the iPad keynote, I was in the 'what's it for' camp but now I want one and so do a lot of others.

I'm sure Apple has a strategy for iPad 2 to be released after the holiday season, to see off the opposition and keep up the momentum.

Go SJ.:D

This was me as well. I just didn't understand it until I started playing with it at a Best Buy. When my netbook started falling apart I took the plunge and I'm enjoying it very much.

Yes.. you figured me out HLdan - My goal was to bring down the iPad's glory. Seriously? No. And you brought up competition. Another poster brought up MS. I responded to you both as opposed to double posting. Stand by what you said all you want. I'll do the same.

I will because we're now going in circles. We both agree that the statistic is relatively meaningless. Especially since android tablets are even newer to the scene than the iPad. Yes - people have choices.. but not many - which is why, again - this is hardly surprising. Anyone who IS surprised at this statistic is naive to the actual competitive landscape. I know you're not.

So you never read any replies about this, huh? Never put yourself in other people's shoes? Well, I don't own one, but it is on my list for the next 12 months of purchases (depends on what the 2nd Gen turns out to be). I think they are the most brilliant and progressive devices around, though the computing power is a little light at this time. If they had a few more simple programs available, I'd buy now. Here's why I would buy one:

• Better resolution with a more comfortable size than an iPT
• Word processing with wireless or joined keyboard
• Plays music
• Spreadsheets
• Surfs the web with much better comfort than an iPT
• Easier to compose and read mails
• Portable but not diminutive
• Better video viewing

How's that? Are those invalid? I have an iPT and don't use it for anything aside from simple apps and music anymore. Movies and surfing are a hassle at that size, typing is tough.

With a faster processor and a litte more storage and possibilities for expansion through the dock, it would take over my desktop Mac and be my all-rounder aside from professional art/publishing/CGI/web building stuff.
