A survey can be made to reflect whatever you want.

The beauty is, one of them is guaranteed to be right!

While you are quite correct in saying that the Playbook and Android tablets have very limited outlets at the moment, you missed the point that the poll didn't ask, "What did you buy", but rather, "What will you buy?" The question itself ignores the concept of where a responder might get it and simply asks what that person intends to buy when the opportunity arises. That's a huge refutation to your argument.

How about answering the question yourself? What will YOU buy?

even putting that in. Still means next to nothing due to the length of time the different products have been out.
Almost everyone has heard of the iPad but the other things on that list unless you follow tech you more than likely have not heard of it. They have not been around and out in the wild long enough to make the poll worth much.

Also I have learned that anything with an Apple product listed you have to factor in the fanboy factor which means you need to reduce the number somewhat.

I never really understood why people want an ipad (other than image) its a big ipod touch. It can't replace a laptop, it wont obviously replace an ipod....whats the point of it?

You've made the point yourself (and then contradicted yourself). It a lot like a big iPod Touch.

I rarely frequent my "main" computer anymore because I can turn on my iPod for a few seconds or a few minutes and check my emails, weather, stocks, news, and so many other things from anywhere in the house. It's become my go-to device more so than anything else and for home use, a bigger screen is the only thing it really needs. Enter iPad.

I don't have an iPad but I see the point. Obviously, you've never owned a 3.5" iDevice, because I would have made a statement like yours before owning mine. It's redefined computing. It really has.

OMG there's still someone left who doesn't own an iPhone? Wow.

I owned the Galaxy S when I was in Asia over the summer, and i sold it like a ten cent hooker so fast. It was a great OS, but the phone's build was so flimsy in comparison to iPhone\iPad. Wonder if the Galazy Tab is all plasticy too.

For a research report that costs $1,500 to view in its entirety, I feel it safe to assume they didn't employ nonsensical survey methods like samcraig implied (and afterwards tried to paint as tongue-in-cheek).

You could always purchase the report and let the rest of us know the details of their survey methodology. ;)

It was tongue in cheek.

But that aside - have you done any surveying yourself? Ever take a class in statistics, marketing or the like? Surveys always have a margin of error. And sample size is almost always inadequate. The bottom line and rule of thumb - you can pretty much get statistics to say whatever you want by presenting the data however you want.

The article doesn't present any real usable information. The study might. But the article does not.

Finally a reasonable response. So many people just go along with surveys they agree with even if they're totally backwards. LOL. Good points, thanks for the input. :)

I like using the Epicurious app as an example of one thing the iPad is good at. On the iPhone, it's a useful reference but not the most enthralling thing to use... the website is pleasant, but you still have that 'point and click' interface which isn't exactly great for the kitchen. The iPad has a fantastic looking app that's easy to use and beats both other devices. (This is based on a few minutes play in the Apple Store, but it became obvious to me as to why it's on the device for demo purposes).

With regards to the scores, it'll be interesting to see how those change after the release of 4.2, I'd think that at least a few percent of the 'Satisfied's will move up a notch due to the multitasking etc.

Prior to device release, manufacturers can hype their products to unheard of heights in order to woo customers. How often do we get something new that we find is even better than we were told it would be? The RIM and Android devices will be reviewed, be compared to the iPad and I expect the best we will see in most tech journals that don't have a hard bias either way is that a few of these devices are comparable to iPad. Prior to that we'll be given promises that these are the iPad killers to persuade consumers this is the device for them. If anything, I expect the percentages to go down for the competitors once their products are on the shelves with an RRP stickered on them.

This truly is 2001 again, where Apple has taken someone elses idea that has always shown promise, and absolutely run away with the market. If Microsoft hadn't smartly gotten their fingers into practically every business place in the first world decades ago, I wouldn't doubt OSX having a larger market share in 2010.

In my opinion the one thing Apple should concentrate on: selling iMacs and MacBooks to people who own iPods and iPhones but still have Windows based PCs.

Does anyone know how it compares to iPhone satisfaction? Another way of looking at it is that more people might still be satisfied with their iPhone than their iPad.

It's not just that one is a phone and friends call you on it, but I think it also shows that iPad satisfaction might even go higher just like the iPhone seems to be more useful and satisfying with each model.

hmmm

95% huh. So these numbers are based on a survey or...? Are any of these Android tablets even shipping yet? It's cool to show Apple with a 95% share, but does it really mean anything? The market isn't even truly defined yet. What do the analysts consider a tablet to be? Do they include the oldie moldy Windoze laptop/tablet hybrids as tablets? If not, wouldn't Apple have a 100% share right about now?

8% interest in Playbook huh? Well, I say good for RIM. Say what you will about their Crackberry being old hat - they saved everyone in companies far and wide from being beholden to WinCE/WinMo/WinPhone/whatever they're calling it today, devices.

The 'most likely purchase' chart is missing 4%.

In any case, I hope Apple cleans up in this category, but I also welcome competition from the like of Android. Keeps everyone on their toes. As an owner of a desktop, laptop, and iPhone, I'm still not sure why I need a tablet - any tablet.

Pretty much what I've been saying since the start of this thread

I pretty much agree that this survey is meaningless. However, I find my iPad to be a great addition to my tech line-up. And, now that mainstream retailers are offering it, its appeal will grow. So, this survey may just be a precursor for next's years survey that is close to it?

I don't really care. My ipad is a great device and I will continue to enjoy using it. If others don't like it, so be it.

I sold my iPad after getting my MBA, but I certainly see the huge market for iPad. My only complaint for MY use was it was too much of a mobile OS, and I prefer to have the full OS that comes on a MB Air... so I swapped, but for many I think the iPad OS is great. It's a friggin amazing device.

Where's the Android stores where people are lined up around the mall just to put their name on a list to get in a pre-order for the new Galaxy device? That's as scientific of a survey as I need ;-)

Of course Android tablets are only just now being released in the wild, so of course their market share is tiny. But just wait until next quarter when of necessity their market share will rise while, also of necessity, iPad market share will fall. That will bring everyone out of the woodwork to yell incessantly how Android is "catching up to iPad!"

We shall see.

Remember this is not the phone battle, where Apple is limited to a single US carrier. Anyone can use an iPad, and it is unlikely that any comparable android tablets will be less expensive... so yes obviously Apple's share will drop, I don't think it will be significant, and I think Apple will command the lion's share of the tablet market for a long, long time.

Just read an article that states just that. Tablets are going to be released in droves - but as of right now - the price point isn't competitive

Something you all need to remember.

Let's make up some numbers shall we?

Apple make the iPhone with iOS
10 other companies make Android Phones.

Android phones are growing market share at a staggering rate.

Everyone predicts Android will swamp iOS phones before very long.

If these tens/hundreds of millions of people now and in the future have Android Phones, are they not going to possibly feel more at home with a Android Tablet once they have matured?

And less lightly to change over to iOS for their tablet experience?

Of course, Apple has pretty much no competition, so surveys now are a joke, but unless Apple really, and I mean REALLY stay way ahead of the up and coming competition over the next 5 years, they are not going to be able to stand up to a whole raft of other tablets long term.

Of course, they will always have loyal supporters.

Steve Jobs needs to decide if he's going to sit on the current iPad and tweak it, or really push very hard every single year to keep Apples device at the very head of the pack.

Just not for me... yet

As a professional artist, I'd been drooling over the thought of a Mac tablet for years. But since all I could do on the iPad is fingerpainting, it's useless for me. I'm hoping upcoming Droid-based tablets will have a Wacom-style digitizer and a useful Photoshop (or equivalent) app. Ideally it'd prompt Apple to include that functionality in iPad 2 or 3... if not, at least I'd have an alternative.

I'm getting so tired of carrying my Macbook, my 12" Cintiq and all its cables around with me just so I can work at the corner café.

price

iPad is very well priced and upcoming rivals ( samsung, rim ) will have a hard time to compete. I am more for iPod marketshare scenario than Iphones

That's a good point. I might have to agree with that.

You are in a distinct minority, but you have a valid need. This is for you:

Thanks!

Yeah... I just may end up getting the Modbook, if the Droid vendors don't come up with anything I could use. I've been holding off on the Modbook in hopes that they'll eventually increase the pressure sensitivity to match the Cintiq.

I know I'm in a minority, but I can't help but think Apple or the others would sell at least a few million more units to graphics pros, art schools, etc... if they could figure out a way to include a digitizer without adding too much to the price (big "if," I know).

No it doesn't; because the majority of the non-Apple products haven't been officially released yet--only announced. Yet still Rim's PlayBook took 8%. I understand what you're trying to say, but the reality doesn't seem to fit your analysis. If people already know about the Playbook, then they should already know about the majority of the Android tabs on the list. The biggest problem with the Android tabs is that they've already been proven as "Not Yet Ready for Enterprise." That's why their numbers are so low.

Oh, and that 'fanboy' quotient was used up after the first month. They sold more iPads in that first month than they sold of all models of Mac computers in '96 at 700,000 units, when the only Apple buyers were fanboys.
Or are you trying to tell me Apple now has over 10 million fanboys?
