Apple's list of reasons why the iPad Pro can replace a computer are as follows:

1 It's more powerful than most computers.
Most computers can do tasks that the iPad can't
The iPad pro is more powerful than most users needs. The iPad pro is very niche. Which is why Apple doesn't sell many of them. Apple sells mostly the less expensive iPad. Apple has been steadily reducing the price if the entry level iPad as iPad sale have been decimated, well actually more than decimated but it sounds good :D
2 It's versatile. It's a scanner, camera, editing suite, notepad, cinema, music studio, book, and a computer.
Its a consumption device and also for artists.
3 It goes anywhere thanks to LTE.
Laptops also go anywhere.
4 It's as easy as this (with a focus on gestures).
It's not a very efficient productive device. But then most of the population don't to productive tasks.
So its a productive consumption device.
5 It's even better with Apple Pencil.
God gave us 10 styluses. Let's not invent another.
if there’s a stylus, that’s failure

let call it a pencil, that'll fix it.:D

5 reasons not to buy the iPad Pro

  1. It is more powerful than most iPad users require.
  2. It costs more than the entry level iPad, just buy that instead.
  3. You can buy 3.6 maxed out 9.7" iPads for the price of a maxed out iPad Pro
  4. For a professional user, you'll still need to fork out for a laptop, go with a less expensive companion device.
  5. People might think you have a laptop once you unfold the iPad from your rucksack :D

For multiple generations ive been trying to replace my casual laptop with an iPad then iPad Pro. It has failed to replace it.

For those criticsing those from IT and who actually seriously use their devices, something as simple as Microsoft word demonstrates the disparity between the laptop and iPad. If simple things like Word can not be made powerful enough on iPad, how will you ever replace a laptop. The reduction in capabilities of apps, made me running back to the Mac.

The simplest one is that you can’t even open two word documents and edit them side-by-side. This is such a normal working scenario that the ipad can’t do.

I am well aware of this limitation in iOS, and have cited it myself in other posts. We all know that there are issues with the software lagging the hardware...not a news flash. Sorry, not good enough.

The position that has been taken is that the iPad is a toy and can not be used for productive work period.....and, you have rushed to the defense of that position. That means you must support and defend the notion that absolutely nothing productive is possible on an iPad. Or, admit that this is a gross exaggeration and start elevating the conversation to something more intelligent.

Also, you must explain how drawing and sketching diagrams on a job site are more efficiently performed on a laptop than on an iPad. How point of sale transaction are more efficient on a laptop. How reading, marking-up and annotating work documents are more efficiently done on a laptop. How taking handwritten notes is more efficient on a laptop. How signing contracts is more efficient on a laptop. Actually, you have to demonstrate that all of these things are not even possible on an iPad to meet the bar set by the absurd position that you are supporting.

Or, stop with the absolutely ridiculous notion that an iPad is just a toy, since people are using them every day to get stuff done.

No wonder there is market confusion and saturation.

Laptops have got lighter and more powerful. Portable realistic power.
Tablets have got lighter and more powerful. Portable ease.

As Jobs said, when he introduced the iPad. There is a gap between phone and laptop/desktop.

Now nearly a decade later that gap is now full of tablets, laptops and even some phones. Hence why this fight and uncertainty on what device fits needs.

Personally I found the ipad the BEST consumption device, however when I wanted to do something productivity wise, I grabbed a mac.

If I cannot control/zap ads, trackers, images, javascript, it is not a computer for me.

I think you've nailed it. For most people it isn't about pro software, coding but just browsing the net there are plenty of sites that use javascript.
You do find after a while using an ipad, there are things you want to do that you just can't do and you sigh and go back to the computer.

Besides, for most people you get fed up trying to type on a screen and so you buy a cover with a keyboard, and if you do that, you may as well buy a laptop.

I think for a lot or people, if you can't access work on a laptop, then it can't replace a computer
What about your NAS? With Synology DM: you have some access but for the full control you need a computer.
What about router controls. My Asus router has cut down controls on IOS too and there is parental controls and time management that are severely limited, plus it's buggy.
Can I use it to connect my phone for a restore like I can to Mac OS?
It doesn't take me long to realise it wouldn't replace a computer for me.

1. Multi-user support
2. Filesystem access similar to Mac
3. External storage support
4. Xcode for iPad, because to be computer it must be able to produce software for itself
5. Optional mouse support
6. Enable choosing default apps for files/actions

Once we get there, I might consider it. Hardware side is great though.

Oh my gosh, I could not agree more. If Xcode was on the iPad...I would never buy a Mac again!

12 versions deep and Apple still has not "done so", why? A $10 WiFi mouse vs a $130 Pencil. *

Most people have been thinking about it - the mouse interface is the most significant component of the computer.

An open shoulder posture when using the device vs scrunching over a Pad or a Laptop - murder on the shoulder girdle.

Why should we "have to" touch the screen when touch typing on a keyboard - just because Apple won't allow the mouse? It is not a 4" phone screen!

A lot of people, especially in the Windows world don't use the trackpad because of its position on the left side of the keyboard - so much easier to use a mouse. Thankfully, all Apple touch pads are central; still the shoulder capsule is strained even after five minutes or so of use.

Apple isn't going to do WHAT? Adapt - a larger screen from the Android phones; Add a Pencil; USe Intel processor; Use Samsung screens; Be more like a Surface, only better; or .... worst of all,

use a Cursor!

Why not?

* BT mouse price?

Apple is already moving towards a touchpad for iPads. On my iPad I can hold my finger on the space bar and the entire keypad turns into a touchpad and I can move the curser around the document just like I would with the touchpad on my MacBook Pro.

Can I open the same app multiple times to work on a project or file? How come a lot of webpages load mobile versions and can’t even revert to desktop versions? Can I add extensions to my safari that are available on my Mac? Can I add a different web browser with its own technology and extensions? Can I easily select text to copy and paste across multiple apps with ease? No? Then an iPad isn’t a computer. Can’t it be fixed with a better OS? Yes, but iOS 13 has to be a major redesign, and my bet Apple isn’t going to do that. It will be full of compromises just like iOS 12 is.

This is ridiculous. The iPad can never be my next computer until it behaves like a computer.

Apple have ruined every single iPad with an OS that was designed to be used by a phone. Until Apple release an OS suitable for a tablet, then the iPad will only ever be a secondary device.

What's the point of producing amazing hardware only for it to be completely rendered useless & unnecessary by iOS?

Does the iPad have support for a robust file system / download manager and the ability to use a mouse when required?

No?

Than it isn't going to replace a computer. Ever.

You don’t need a mouse on the iPad. You use your fingers.

File system? Works perfectly. Like on the Mac.

iPad does nearly everything the Mac does. But it requires a different way of doing it. Something that most people aren’t willing change. So they, like I believe you, will need to constantly find excuses to explain to themselves why they would never change, like the lack of support for the mouse :)

The cost is definitely an issue to me. I know the hardware performance has increased significantly compared to the other generations of iPads vs. Computers, so that specifically is not an issue at all. I would be able to get through my day if it wasn't for the need of Xcode. Releasing that to iOS will be a game changer to me. If that isn't going to happen, then I would also need to invest in an iMac, MacBook Pro 15 inch or equivalent screen resolution wise, which pushed the cost higher than I might want to pursue, considering that I need both macOS and iOS suddenly. Sticking to my MacBook Pro until my needs is completely fulfilled in iOS.

iOS & macOS are worlds apart.

The iPad does NOT have a file system. It has an app that shows your iCloud/OneDrive/Creative Cloud content etc but this is NOT a file system.

But with software that is less powerful than most computers.

We get it, the hardware is great. But the software is severely lacking.

True, but not more expensive than a Mac.
And I'd say for many users the base iPad, not the pro, is a viable solution and costs about 1/3.
You only have the hassle of charging the external bluetooth keyboard from time to time, but the OS is the same and I don't think the A12X is necessary if you just browse the web and do email like many people do.
The only downside is the display, 9.7'' is maybe too small while 11 or 12.9 are much better, although iOS only seldom takes advantage of the big screen.

Or it's just less productive to use the iPad. I had the misfortune to use one for a few days when I left my laptop behind.
It was about 30-40% of the productivity for writing/editing/sharing documents and there were some things I just couldn't do. Change the hardware and software limitations, add a fully functional keyboard (with arrow keys!), external pointing device, some (sensible) ports, and something to properly support the device at an infinitely variable angle and a proper OS and the iPad would be fine. But if I had to dump one device from my collection, it would be the iPad. If I had to dump a second, it would be the phone. Then it gets tricky :)

That quote doesn’t mean anything. It’s saying nothing ever changes. AND THNGS CHANGE. That’s the only thingwe can guarantee.
We’re talking about software, code...not fundamental laws of physics.

Your rebuttal doesn't mean anything. iOS has been on the iPad for almost a decade, and it's yet to escape the "oversized iPhone" state of functionality.

There are too few changes that barely reach a "computer replacement" threshold, and we have just a couple third party app providers to thank for the numbered 'Pro' apps out there.

Apple today shared a new short video focused on the recently released 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, listing five reasons why the tablets can be your next computer.

Apple's list of reasons why the iPad Pro can replace a computer are as follows:
  1. It's more powerful than most computers.
  2. It's versatile. It's a scanner, camera, editing suite, notepad, cinema, music studio, book, and a computer.
  3. It goes anywhere thanks to LTE.
  4. It's as easy as this (with a focus on gestures).
  5. It's even better with Apple Pencil.
This is Apple's first ad for the new iPad Pro models, but it has long advertised the iPad Pro as an alternative to a computer. Apple uses the tagline "like a computer unlike any computer," in this ad, which is something new the company has been trying out.

Apple's 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models were first introduced in late October and shipped out in November. The new iPads feature edge-to-edge displays with Face ID and no Home button, powerful A12X processors with performance on par with many Mac notebooks, USB-C to connect to 4K monitors and USB-C accessories, and thinner bodies.

The 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799 for 64GB of storage, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at $999, also for 64GB of storage.

Yeah, right Apple. If you got a proper Filesystem app maaaayyyybe. The OS and USB - C can handle masstorage without any issues. Probably. Pricepoint entrymodel 300$ lower. Sweeter. Oh, yes and fix messages and FaceTime in a way that they can be used reliably. Then: Yes.

Nice to have: Having hardware and software that not starts becoming obsolete after 12 months would really be "being green". Other than that. A phone for 1500$??? To have the latest emojis available? Are you guys still living on the same planet?

For those people who are supporting that the iPad can be a laptop replacement, even close to it's usefulness, even most people, I suggest you live an active tech life with the iPad solely for a year for everything without using any laptop/desktop even for a second. Good luck. No need to publicise your results at end, we know the answer.
