Never noticed the jelly effect until these pantywaists pointed it out. It happens on the iPhone 12 mini, too.

BFD

Frivolous lawsuit, but contrary to what Apple claims, jelly scrolling is by no means ‘normal’ or acceptable for a $500 tablet.

Just keep returning it until you get one without the defect or buy something else?
Apple, iFixIt, and others say it is
It’s actually 14 days but if you go to the Apple store and talk to the manager within 30 days they most likely honor it. Also, we had a holiday return policy in place too.
I thought about the holiday return period after posting. And yeah, they can make exceptions - it just depends on the staff. Lots of shady stuff in the local stores (that has affected Apple Retail as a whole) has made them more hesitant to make those exceptions.

I use this iPad everyday and don’t even notice the jelly scrolling affect and the display looks fine ?
I can recreate the issue, but on average use, web browsing, some email, video watching, I don't notice it. I also have the M1 12.9 Pro - but for many uses - including reading books, I prefer the mini

I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me. Now I cannot unsee it. But I like the overall product too much to stop me from using it. So I just live with it. Hopefully in a future generation they can fix it.
Most likely this goes to a high percentage of owners on these boards as well.

This may at least be a sign to Apple that they need to fix the issue. Except now if they fix the issue, they will have to admit there was an issue in the first place so this won't be fixed until the next iPad mini.
I think THIS is the point of this case. Not to win but to have apple admit fault somehow in any of their products to open up more meaningful cases aka drag brand name in the mud.
Why is everyone always rooting for Apple? it would benefit everyone if they lose this case. Quality products are what we EXPECT from Apple, not this trash.

pat worse this case would force Apple to do a recall to all owners with receipt of purchase. Leading to a controller switch/repair and that’ll be that. But there is no real benefit as this increases R&D cost accounting and will lead to higher prices down the road, not a win for consumers. Most likely Apple will win and no solution for existing consumers that purchased and missed their return window. Again no win for consumers.

Anyone who uses any other variation of iPad primarily in landscape mode should also sue :rolleyes:

Feel fortunate!

It’s there, don’t worry.
Apple admitted it publicly
Careful its not in writing, posted, or any response directly from a identified Apple party.
Newest iPad mini has a subtle scrolling problem [Updated] - ARSTechnical - Andrew Cunningham - 9/27/2021, 11:25 AM
Update, 9/28/2021: In response to our inquiry, Apple has told us that the "jelly scroll" issue on the 6th-generation iPad mini is normal behavior for LCD screens. Because these screens do refresh line by line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top of the screen and lines at the bottom are refreshed. This can cause uneven scrolling issues like the ones observed on the iPad.
This is the text that all comments about Apple publicly admitting this are based on. I've never seen where some Apple staff are mentioned.

We need the British legal system where those who sue and lose pay all legal costs. That means no class action lawsuits and relieves society of scummy lawyers.
Cases get lost all the time because one side is not as well financed as the other.

What you are suggesting would prevent many David vs. Goliath cases from happening.

The winning side can always make a motion for the opposing side to pay all court costs, including the winning sides court costs and attorneys fees.

The issue is indeed common on LCD display, but only with poorer panels. Try to find this issue in higher-quality panels like the older iPad Pro models or older iPad minis and you see why they sue.
The panel is inferior yet they advertise it as superior or equal, which is a blatant lie.

I don‘t expect anything to happen in this case but I would appreciate it if Apple could invoke some freaking QA standards that look from a customer standpoint and not from a shareholder‘s one.

These lawsuits are tiring. This is a free market economy, if you don’t like the product, buy something else next time. Bad product design is not illegal.
Agreed. It‘s all about personal accountability. It’s lacking in lots of people these days. Make a mistake, someone else’s fault. The part most frustrating to me is lawsuits like this imply the end user felt they were wronged or damaged due to a fully functioning (and much praised might I add) iPad Mini.

Defective Product Law and Legal Definition

Defective Product is an imperfection in a product that has a manufacturing or design defect, or is faulty because of inadequate instructions or warnings. A product is in a defective condition if it is unreasonably dangerous to the user or to consumer who purchases the product and causes physical harm. A defective condition is a legal cause of damage if it directly or in the natural sequence contributes substantially to the injury.

Maybe not by the books but there's a PR and customer satisfaction aspect so Apple may settle and start a repair/replace service program. Not the first time actually.
I suspect that Apple can tweak this through a software update.

All right people, we're officially at....

GateCon 12

Here's the typical cycle for problems reported on Apple products:
1. A few members post reports of the problem, report it to Apple
2. No response from Apple
3. Increased number of people report the issue
4. No response from Apple
5. Apple apologists dismiss the reports as very rare, the result of trolling, or exaggeration by drama queens
6. Even more reports of the problem
7. No response from Apple
8. News of the problem hits blogs
9. Apple apologists dismiss the blogs as simply engaging in clickbait
10. No response from Apple
11. Those affected by the issue threaten a class-action lawsuit
12. Apple apologists decry the "sue happy" nature of American consumers
13. Apple acknowledges the legitimacy of the problem
14. Apple apologists are silent
15. Apple release an update to correct the problem
or
15. They set up a "program" to address the problem.
16. Apple gains some positive publicity
17. Apple apologists applaud Apple for doing the "right thing". (for an issue that they said from day-1 was not actually an issue)
18. First hand experience with the “program” reveals very strict guidelines and restrictions that greatly reduce the number of affected customers that can participate in the program.

Apple has claimed that there is nothing wrong with the Mini 6... now watch as a result of this lawsuit, Apple will produce an iPad Mini Pro that will have a superior screen that WON'T have the jelly scrolling effect. (similar to how Apple claimed that the iPhone 6 Plus was NOT prone to bending easily but then modified the internals of the 7 Plus to strengthen it.)

...and THAT is when I will upgrade my Mini 5. ?

What corner did they cut? Are they using a cheaper/crappier display panel?
The jelly scrolling (not shared by other devices) indicates a cost-cutting measure, as do the reports that putting pressure in certain spots on the display can cause LCD 'wobble.'

Bingo. Proof in the pudding will be if Apple has the courage to continue with the same wobbly LCD panel for Mini 6. I don't see a bullet point that covers what they would say for the Mini 6 panel replacement if there's nothing wrong with the Mini 5 panel?

No doubt this is a MacRumors forum member.

Since when you can win a lawsuit because a product has a single aspect of it's feature set that is less good than the previous version? Auto manufacturers do this all the time! There was nothing preventing him from returning it the day he noticed it. Apple could put a black and white 240p display in it if they wanted to.

Do you want Apple to say "Screw it, we're getting rid of the iPad mini."? Because this is how you get Apple to say "Screw it, we're getting rid of the iPad mini."

If un-smooth scrolling is lawsuit worthy then I'm pretty sure every Windows and Android device is illegal.

Did you notice in the court document he trying to use random posts from Walmart, Amazon, BestBuy reviews, along with twitter posts and multiple posts from our dear MacRumors Forums. Pages 20 they 24 of the court PDF. See Consumers experiences with The iPad mini 6.

You can find other examples online. The Samsung Galaxy Fold obviously showed it.

This is due to the way Samsung designed the display to get refreshed on Galaxy Fold. For most smartphones, the displays refresh from top to bottom (when in portrait mode) to ensure optimal user experience in the portrait mode as that is usually the way you hold your phone in your hand. Apparently, Samsung chose to design the display on the Fold to refresh it "horizontally" which is from right to left (when in the portrait mode) or from top to bottom but in the landscape mode. I guess that was probably because they thought users would be mostly watching the contents in the landscape mode rather than in the portrait mode as you normally do on a tablet. Whether you agree with this or not is your personal preference but the manufacturer has to make a decision on how to refresh the display on their device. The horizontal refresh mode is commonly used on tablets, but smartphones refresh their display usually vertically. There's no way (at least not yet) to have it both ways. Also, depending on the content displayed, the refresh rate and the phone's processor, the "jelly scrolling" effect is more or less noticeable, but it's always there. You just need to make your own judgment on how that affects your own user experience and what works for you personally.

I couldn't deal with it so I sent mine back on launch. I was in the Apple store the other day and had another play with the mini and it's still just as bad.
Sorry but in normal use I never see it or neither does it effect anything while using it. The ipad air has the same issue just in a different direction.
