Mac news are dumb sometimes. One user complains on Twitter, gets picked up by all mac news websites, the issue gets amplified and lawyers get involved. I bought an iPad mini at launch, noticed the jelly scrolling once. I use it daily and totally enjoy it. If someone doesn’t like their iPad mini they should’ve returned it
Correct especially at Christmas time since they had the extra time to keep it and see if they liked it or hated it

Does it render the device unusable? It's subjective I guess but don't think so.

A device doesn’t have to be unusable for it to be considered as having a defect. Where jelly scrolling lies on the spectrum showstopper/defect/annoyance/quirk/unnoticeable is indeed subjective.

Lawsuit aside -- they raised the price on the bloody thing!

(with this very "meh" display panel in it)

Let's demand more from Apple please.

Maybe not by the books but there's a PR and customer satisfaction aspect so Apple may settle and start a repair/replace service program. Not the first time actually.
They will not do so. The scrolling behavior is evident (or not, depending on the user) during the return period, so the remedy for dissatisfaction is to return the product (which, BTW, people don't seem to be doing in large numbers). This is entirely different from a hidden defect, which may require replacement or repair once discovered.

I think - just a pet theory - some folks are sucked in by the Apple PR machine ... and others are living off the memories and visions of "plucky little fighter Apple trying to beat back big bad Microsoft!" -- from 20 years ago now.

No, it’s just people not liking that the devices they paid good money for and which their self-worth may a little bit depend on would be considered flawed.

This thread should come with a warning:

If you don't see it, don't look for it!

Once seen, cannot be unseen. Enjoy your product.
That is very good advice for all these consumer electronic products, especially displays but I have tried to see it and still couldn't. I've watched the videos where they slow the screen down and show how to duplicate it, I just can't.
I had a DLP TV and the only way I could see rainbows was to stretch my eyes by looking out the sides or moving them very quickly which was stupid because no one watched tv like you are having a seizure.

Is it a defect? I have the latest iPad Pro and I notice the blooming in the Kindle app when I’m using white text on a black background. I didn’t return it because my understanding is it’s not a defect and all the new iPad Pros are like that.
Sure, no need to return it as long as you’re happy with it. My point was why waste time and money on a lawsuit when you could just return it indefinitely until you get one you’re satisfied with?

I've seen the videos of the effect, but I cannot for the life of me see it in person on my own iPad mini. Chalking this one up to I'm blind enough to not be able to make out the reported "defect" and remaining happy with my device. ?

  • Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise) for Televisions, Projectors, Major Appliances (refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers), Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Smart Watches, Cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones (return details will vary by carrier service contract). yes they sell them.
Just a point that some places you could buy the iPad have longer returns then a Apple Store.

That’s cause “member” is aid by all Costco shoppers so this offers an extended period but the standard is 14 days for electronics by law.

I bought one, love it -- it's my most used iPad ever.

Jelly scrolling doesn't bother me and it's not like I haven't seen it before on other machines over the years.

The irony is that viewing this forum makes it most noticable.... if you scroll up and down the forum, the blue vertical lines between posts go all wavy. In fact depending on what direction you scroll the lines can be almost a centimeter higher on one side of the screen than the other. Terrible. The horizontal lines in the settings app show it too.

I can live with the jelly scroll on my Mini 6, but the overall screen quality is terrible. I'll be upgrading soon as an OLED iPad is out. So that's exciting for.....me, I guess. Alert the media, I'm special.

This is good news. It was unbearable and sent mine back as well. Previous mini does not have the problem like this one. I compared it, since my sister has the older one. Even she said no way is that right. Side by side you can totally see the differences. The jelly scroll is real and very distracting. I hope the case is won and will cause Apple not to skimp. They left this defect in using cheaper panels while raising the price trying to get one over consumers.

No they didn't skimp on the panel. The mini is awesome, and they fully back it with a return policy that you took advantage of.

It's always nice to see how everyone is suddenly, an expert on LED displays/controllers and lawyers at the same time.
Always eager to defend Apple? Am I the only sucker that pays for the products full price and I don't get the "defend large corporation on the internet discount"? :/
I don't have an opinion on the matter since I don't know enough but it's entertaining reading the comments :)
No, I don't get the defend apple at any cost discount either -- and am actually quite vocal about the M1 MBA and it not fitting what I need in a computer. I didn't return it either, and hope to find a use for it one of these days.

But the mini, love it, jelly scrolling never bothered me on anything. (and I've seen it on a lot of different machines!) It's all just what we all perceive as important.

If you bring up a frivolous lawsuit and you loose, you should pay not just for your lawyers but those of the defendant and the whole judiciary time (judge, court room time, etc.) you engaged for your crap.
That would make it a lot riskier to sue and there really are instances where it's not only warranted, but necessary for class action suits.
