Try comparing how much storage a Microsoft Surface has available to the user.
IIRC you only have about 14 GB storage available on a 32K machine.

If microsoft can pull that off, then they're doing better than anyone else in memory optimization and compression lol.

Reminds me of the days of high memory prices and mostly useless memory compression software that claimed to effectively double your installed memory.

And yes, I see its a typo, just funny and would actually be interesting if they effectively accomplished the task. There are actually effective ways to achieve great compression in storage. And if the devices memory was increased to say 2 or 3 GB, then perhaps some on the fly compression software could effectively let you store more data in the 16 GB of storage space. For example, compressed stored files being decompressed as they are opened and launched. There's enough processing power in new iPhones to accomplish this if the working memory (RAM) was increased.

Apple is never hesitant to sue, now it's their turn to experience the expense and inconvenience that action like this creates.

Yet that said, this is a mere blip on their display. With massive resources, lots of practice in court and an advantage no other company or customers possess, Apple will get off like it never happened.

Almost like the government or organized crime, Apple's untouchable.

car manufacturers do the same. theres the model with the weedy engine that barely gets you up a steep hill fully laden with passengers. How many times do you go up those kind of hills fully laden? not often, maybe the cars suitable for you. If not heres the model with the bigger engine that will get you up those hills.

there are other examples

Problem: Not enough storage space in Apple iPhone 6 / 6 Plus devices for consumers. {This is presumably a most notably unnerving in 16 GB storage devices}

Solution:

As the current line up indicates, 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB.

Eliminate 16GB sizes, possibly begin including 256GB in the future.
32GB may be a new 'middle' compromise, but
64GB is ideal for users due to plentiful room for a year long accumulation of data.

Your on point, 16gb iPhones 6/6 plus are joke. App sizes are getting bigger each year passes and room for media is also important.

The problem with the current 16gb models is that out of the box it only has 12gb free to use however you like, but it's not that simple.

While my iphone is a 64gb model. I decided to get a 16gb ipad for Microsoft office, streaming netflix, itunes, google play, watchespn, youtube, vudu and NBCSN. Nothing is on my device except apps and photos.

I have skype, wechat, cash of clans and hearthstone loaded on my ipad with less then 150 photos. I have 2.3 gbs free.

Before I had pages, numbers and pdf expert with a few larger pdfs with 1.8gbs free. I was unable to download a 700mb update because it said I needed 2.1gbs available.

Its ridiculous that this should even be an issue with over the air updates. Apple pushes the idea that an iPad can replace your laptop, but unless I want to delete lots of my data I need a laptop/ desktop to update my idevice.

Should they be sued most likely not, but they definitely should not be requiring 2.1gbs of free space out of 12gbs for an update if they are going to keep offering a 16gb model.

Right, selling a 12gb iPhone as a 16gb is the most insane thing Apple can do.
What a waste of customers time and money.

Android phones, windowsphones and others do that. Apple iPhones storage is actually good compare to samsung galaxy's storage. My nexus 5 is 32gb but out of the box it was at least 26.5 storage space available.

The real crime is that Apple is selling 16GB devices... yikes.

I just read about this on Huff Po I'm not so sure this one is valid. The only bright side is it might usher in higher capacity storage next revision.

I told my friends not to buy the 16GB version but they wouldn't listen.

On a serious note this is not unique to Apple. Manufacturers should only be allowed to specify the amount of space available to the user. So the 16GB iPhone should actually be sold as a 8GB iPhone. And that should apply to all the other smartphone manufacturers.

----------

The real crime is that Apple is selling 16GB devices... yikes.

What makes it worse is that I would bet that the vast majority of early purchases were the 16GB version mainly because that's been the only version you can walk into an Apple Retail Store or Mobile Network Store and buy without a long wait.

Apple are just storing up trouble for the future with a lot of dissatisfied iPhone 6 16GB customers. At least if they bought another brand they could stick a card in to increase the size of the memory but not with the iPhone.

Any company this applies to. However some can get away with it a bit more depending on overall price and expandable storage. The Tab Pro I have only had 16GB yet 64GB micro sd card for $25.

When I got my iPhone in 2009! I went for 32GB.

All these updates each year, better screens, CPUs, camera etc... yet they cheap out on the memory because it i the easiest thing to market as an upgrade vs anything else.

I wonder how much 128GB currently cost them vs 16GB.

I wonder how much 128GB currently cost them vs 16GB.

It's significantly more than most people assume. A lot of people base their price assumption off of cheap storage alternatives. Their cost and mark up on increased storage is in line with their profit margin on the base device.

It's ridiculous. Every device/drive where the OS is stored on the same storage space as the user addressable space will utilize some of that storage. Not to mention the whole GB (1GB byte = 1,000,000,000 bytes) to GiB (1Gib = 1,073,741,824 bytes) conversion where an advertised 32GB capacity is really only ~29.8GiB available to the user BEFORE anything consumed by formatting or OS load. That's 7% off the top.

One of the issues is how drive manufactures handles space. They should follow the IEC definitions KiB, MiB, GiB etc. and the OS should use those as well when printing out the available space.

32GB is equal to more or less 29.8GiB you haven't lost any space, it just looks that way.

16 to 32 would hardly be anything. Going to 128 is going to be a bit more. Since they are a large company they get price breaks in bulk. I also imagine the storage is a bit nicer then what comes in a cheap flash drive.

Storage should be storage

I can't store anything in the OS section of the storage.. :p

It's the same on a Mac, PC, Windows Phone, Android device, etc. Are MS and the various Android device manufacturers being sued? No.

Also, I use a 16 GB iPhone 5S and iPad 3. I have zero storage issues.

----------

Putting aside the merits of this particular suit, I do believe it would be nice if manufactures (not just Apple) said something like " *___GB Available Storage"), in smaller print, when selling a device.

It is somewhat misleading to advertise the full 16GB (or whatever), when a significant percentage of that may already be eaten up by the OS which comes installed.

That becomes an issue as every OS update then has to fit in the same footprint.

Dumb lawsuit.

Stuff can now be stored and accessed via the cloud which minimizes how much storage space is needed on a phone.

Storage space costs around $25 a year. It costs an additional $100 to buy a larger phone. Most people upgrade phones about every 2 years. If you are near WiFi more often than not then it would make sense to buy a phone with less storage.

As far as the actual lawsuit couldn't every other phone company be sued for the same thing?

Should be an easy suit to defend for Apple... Every single device I've ever bought that has storage capacity advertises it in the same way the iPhone does. Total capacity and not free space. Any computer, laptop etc. Even hard drives after you format them have less capacity than the advertised spec.

What moron lawyer took this case?

I personally think that the lawyer that took this case is an opportunist and very smart. I don't think this would be a case that would fall under the "pro bono" category. So the lawyer(s) will most likely make quite a bit off of what they already know to be a losing battle.

The article didn't mention anything about iOS 7. It isn't any more complicated than a 16GB iPhone has less than 12GB available when purchased new. Every company gets dinged for this type of stuff, Apple isn't (nor shouldn't be) any different.
Which company was sued about that ? Could you please provide a link ?

The available storage potentially could change at every single update, so it would be an useless information

Yes but does Samsung let this be known to their customers before they purchase the phone? Also Samsung allows for removable storage.

Removable storage isn't the same as internal storage, especially with latest Android iterations....

----------

While this can be argued, Android phones support storage expansion via micro sd, while iPhones do not. A user can easily drop a 64gb or 128gb in an android device and call it a day while with iPhones, if you got the meager 16gb, you are forced to delete things to make room for content.

Again. Not all of them and even where possible, SD cards support on Android 4.4 and 5.0 isn't like it used to be in earlier versions.....

Personally, I think if you are charging $650 for a phone, you should either get at least 32GB of storage or a micro SD slot. The solution is simple, don't buy it. Vote with your wallet. I can't afford a postpaid plan or a $650 phone so I have a Google nexus.

However this lawsuit is akin to suing a car maker for not having enough space in their compact car. Why did you buy it in the first place?

You can get 128GB USB for $40(retail price) . Not sure why Apple so skimpy with storage space. Those who will buy $500 phone will pay $40 for the connivence of having extra space for the next 2 years.
