Why doesn't apple have 2 storage devices in their phones, one for the iOS & updates etc etc, and the other for customer data such as APPS photos movies etc etc..

Well:

(A) I've never felt their auto-download policy was right (not totally on topic)

(B) I've noticed that I have less available space on my iPad with iOS 8 than every before. Originally, my 64GB iPad with iOS 5 had 57GB of space and now it only has 55GB. My 64GB iPhone 6 only has 56GB available.

(C) I've laughed out loud when reading that people actually file a lawsuit because of such kinds of problems ;)

What about the "sharp practice" of Class Action attorneys who get people to join their suit, only to get pennies on the dollar after the lawyers' costs have been deducted?

Operating system storage space or legal costs? Same thing - it's part of the price paid for the benefits received. And the percentages charged for "overhead" seem much more favorable on the the electronics device makers' side.

That's America these days unfortunately.

You all have to admit that 16GB of storage is a joke for 2014. Users take pictures, video and lets face it, the average Joe doesn't sync to their computer very often.

Apple offering a 16 to 64 gig jump is even further proof its purely about margin. They could have offered 32 gig standard 2 years ago.

Apple have always been margin whores but 16GB entry level models for 5 years is ridiculous. Even bigger joke on iPads.

Not really weighing in on the lawsuit only to say that all devices by all manufacturers should have a clear statement that states approximately how much free space the user has. Either that or store the OS + some extra space on another chip/increase phone storage by that amount.

It's legit for people to expect to have X amount of space if that's what they are buying.

Whether it's a HD, phone, tablet, or other device with storage - it should be clear what is not available.

They should target Microsofts surface tablets, now that OS takes a hefty part of your storage. :roll eyes:

Duh, It has always been that way, on most phones and computers it will take a part of the storage medium.

I was going to say that, my Surface RT had only 16 GB available out of 32 GB out of the box.

----------

Point is, that a) all MS products are not memory limited and are expandable and b) the smallest MS product [32 GB] has more usable space beyond the OS than the smallest IOS device [16 GB]

Pretty sure that point is not mentioned anywhere in this lawsuit.

----------

Windows has an option to turn on or off auto updates. IOS will auto download os updates and take up space, not letting the user get that space back unless they update.

Windows has a list of system requirements on the box. IOS will auto download large os updates even if you don't want them and doesn't tell you before downloading how much space it will take.

Windows let's you downgrade os versions if you don't like the update. IOS doesn't.

He was specifically talking about Surface RT, which ran Windows RT, which has no prior "version" and doesn't have a box.

Not as bad as what Microsoft is doing with the surface. I remember reading a few years ago that surface pro's OS and such came to around 45gb.
That means 64gb->19gb
And 128gb->83gb
That really is a big OS...

The fact that 16gb is still the standard is what's insane. It's been the same for the 3gs, 4, 4s, 5, 5s, and now the 6 and 6+.

Cheap bastards. Give us at least 32gb as a base.

32GB should be the standard, rather then 16GB. I do think Apple is wrong in that respect.

Would it really have effected their profit margins enough to have done a 32-64-128 gig lineup instead of 16-64-128? They've said that they want their products to just work and emphasized on the experience. Well it's harder to enjoy a new iPhone or iPad in 2014/2015 with such a relatively small amount of memory. More GBs also allows people to have more space to fill with more iTunes purchases.

"Using these sharp business tactics, defendant gives less storage capacity than advertised, only to offer to sell that capacity in a desperate moment, e.g., when a consumer is trying to record or take photos at a child or grandchild's recital, basketball game or wedding," alleges the plaintiffs in the case.

Sure, because Apple has stores at weddings, basketball games, and children's/grandchildren's recitals. You run out of space and an Apple representative suddenly appears from behind a surprisingly narrow tree to sell you more space and upgrade your device right there in the auditorium/church/stadium.

The bald-faced (attempt at) emotional manipulation here, without accurately representing a genuine scenario, is galling.

P.S. iCloud and Photo Stream - delete goddamn Angry Birds, Words With Friends and other crap off your device in your "desperate moment" and then get them back from the cloud later. Apple gives you that for free.

And yet people continue to get by with 16GB. I learned a long time ago that an extra $100-200 initially helps more than considerably in the long run when deciding for extra storage. I always buy the max. However, people are cheap and get the base model, only to complain when it doesn't hold a lot. It's on THEM not Apple. Do people even consider what music, apps, photos & video they might want on the phone before buying it? Probably not... and they are dumb for not doing so.

I think that the only people who should get the 16GB model are old people who are going to do little else with it other than making phone calls. And there are plenty of those.

Being cheap is an epidemic. The majority of people who could afford $650 iPhone could easily wait a pay check or two and pay the extra $100 for more storage. This is the main problem I see in the US today, no one wants to wait and save up for anything.

It has nothing to do with being rich, anyone with decent disposable income could pay cash for all the Apple Devices they want if they just put away money each month and save.

With that said, 16GB devices don't exist to me. After suffering for 2 years on a 16GB iPhone 5, never again. Constant syncing and backing up to make space. A year and a half in, I couldn't even take a video longer than 30 seconds due to lack of storage. it was storage hell.

Enough of these rubbish law suits. Why don't we also sue those lawyers that advertise their one room, one desk, one phone and single fax operations as Law Office"s".:(

If I'm able to use the entire volume as a storage drive I don't care about this suit.

If the phone reserves drive volume which I'll never be able to use, then I'm more interested in this. Apple says it has x GB storage, then it should be able to store an x GB size file.

Example: When I buy a harddrive it says the entire capacity on the box, which is the capacity I can use, it doesn't include the OS size on the box. So if I can use an Iphones full volume by deleting the installed stuff then it's OK.

Worst part is that Apple continues to sell 16gb devices, even in the latest generation.

Yes I know they made the 64gb upgrade cheaper by eliminating 32gb, but they should have made 32gb standard and then offered the other upgrade options to 64/128.

16gb in today's smartphones is silly, especially ones with non upgradeable memory like Apple's iOS devices.

That's terrible. Apple should discontinue the 16GB phone immediately, and make the 64GB the base (at its current price level). People who currently own 16GB phones should have them disabled remotely. 16GB phones should not be allowed.

Make sure you opt out of this crap if you get a letter from a lawyer. I guess ambulance chasing is out of fashion, so let's chase multi-national corporations instead.

How can a computer or phone operate with an operating system?

... That's not the worst part at all... They have every right to sell a 16GB version if they want. and plenty of people buy it and still don't fill it up. I know many myself. If you want the headroom, buy the 64. I'm surprised they kept the prices as low as they did given the increase in input cost. The fact that they increased the second tier to 64gb without raising prices means they knowingly reduced their margins in order to accommodate the growing storage needs of their customers. Say thank you.

Multi-nationals need be be restrained...but on things that matter, not the remorse of technically illiterate impulse buyers who can't wait a few weeks to pony up the money for the storage they actually need.
