I am surprised that Apple did this. Its not like they didn't know they were going to be releasing the headphones when the 3G came out, so I wonder what gives... It makes not sense not to have full support.
The headphones were 'officially' announced with the new ipods a few months ago, so my guess is there's something new in store specifically for the iphone (hopefully). That's the only reason why it would make sense not to have the headphones fully compatible.
Maybe we'll see a hands-free, voice-free, think-to-speak pseudo-device at Macworld![]()
Again, I fail to see why one would want to drop $80 on earbuds that were "engineered for superior acoustic accuracy, balance, and clarity" for a device (iPod/iPhone) that is playing COMPRESSED AUDIO.

It's like jumbo shrimp... pretty ugly... start stopping...
As far as incompatibility with iPhone - weird. But not surprising. This is Apple we're talking about.

My good old ET4S pair suffered a catastrophic separation failure, leaving the foam(and filter section) in my ear.

BT earbuds anyone?
Pending a real review from a credible source, lets just hypothetically say that these end up sounding better than any earbud under $100 (not a far fetched proposal). Let's say it also hypothetically gets a decent review in comparison to other dual-driver buds (probably stretching on this point).
In addition you get a remote that does everything but change volume on an iphone.
How is this not a deal at it's price point?

You don't seem to know much about compressed audio. AAC compressed at 256kbit is indistinguishable from uncompressed (I can fit over 1500 songs on my 16GB iPod Touch at that rate and still have room for all my photos). I use the same in my car. But the various iPods are also capable of playing uncompressed WAV files and Apple Lossless (which I use at home to backup my CD collection and broadcast around the house using AppleTV and Airport Express units). So I'm afraid your argument doesn't hold water in the slightest.
in fact most audiophiles cant tell the difference between compressed @ 192 and uncompressed...so i dont really understand what the big deal about this whole lossless thing is...
bottomline - a good set of headphones make a big difference.
