I am surprised that Apple did this. Its not like they didn't know they were going to be releasing the headphones when the 3G came out, so I wonder what gives... It makes not sense not to have full support.

The headphones were 'officially' announced with the new ipods a few months ago, so my guess is there's something new in store specifically for the iphone (hopefully). That's the only reason why it would make sense not to have the headphones fully compatible.

Maybe we'll see a hands-free, voice-free, think-to-speak pseudo-device at Macworld :D

Oxymoron

Again, I fail to see why one would want to drop $80 on earbuds that were "engineered for superior acoustic accuracy, balance, and clarity" for a device (iPod/iPhone) that is playing COMPRESSED AUDIO.

It's like jumbo shrimp... pretty ugly... start stopping...

As far as incompatibility with iPhone - weird. But not surprising. This is Apple we're talking about.

BT earbuds anyone?

even compressed music sounds better NOT on standard apple crapphones.

You miss the point that the new ones are very pretty also. I continue to drool over them.

Here is my review of this earbud:
- its over priced
- it sounds like crap
- its flimsy

Conclusion:
I've never seen or heard this yet but I've come to this conclusion with no experience with these earbuds.

You guys obviously have never heard a dual-driver earbud or you wouldn't be PRE-complaining about the price or the sound of these unprecedentedly priced dual-driver buds. Dual-driver buds blow away 90% of all single-driver buds (there are some amazing singles out there, but for more than $100). Visit head-fi before you start to post what you know about "sound".

I personally wait to listen to an earbud before I decide its value/sound.

You don't have to play compressed audio on your iPod/iPhone. If you care about quality, you can put lossless instead of AAC/MP3.

And people, calm down. It's a pair of headphones. No need to bitch and whine and yell each other and give everyone attitudes just over a set of $80 unreleased earphones. Regardless of who is right or wrong in terms of compatibility or quality, the ones that have horrible attitudes toward others are the real losers.

I assume from your post that you have never tried a headphone on your ipod besides the ones that come with it...

$80 for dual drivers headphone is pretty good compare to others, which are around $200(?). But that said, I'll wait for some reviews before I make a decision.

I have sympathy for the apple rep. In general, unless a product is officially supported/compatible, employees of a company can not say that it will work. This is sad state of the modern world where CYA takes precedence over simple answers. If the rep. had said that it worked, but in the end, it didn't work on your phone, you would expect a refund. If they say it is not supported, but ends up working (in this case almost all the features), the customer benefits from unpublished compatibility. It all comes down to legalese to avoid lawsuits.

From another standpoint, would you expect Chevrolet wheels to be compatible with every car that they sell? I am sure that you could toss some off road rims and fat tires on a Corvette(albeit with a lot of mods), but it wouldn't be a supported configuration and you wouldn't get warranty coverage when they tear up your wheel wells.

I am personally looking forward to the reviews on these new headphones, as I am in the market for some new ones. My good old ET4S pair suffered a catastrophic separation failure, leaving the foam(and filter section) in my ear.

Pending a real review from a credible source, lets just hypothetically say that these end up sounding better than any earbud under $100 (not a far fetched proposal). Let's say it also hypothetically gets a decent review in comparison to other dual-driver buds (probably stretching on this point).

In addition you get a remote that does everything but change volume on an iphone.

How is this not a deal at it's price point?

Just compare the standard earbuds that come with the ipod to for example Shure SE530 and hear the difference.

i agree... thought i don't WANT to $80... i think it's a fair price

You don't seem to know much about compressed audio. AAC compressed at 256kbit is indistinguishable from uncompressed (I can fit over 1500 songs on my 16GB iPod Touch at that rate and still have room for all my photos). I use the same in my car. But the various iPods are also capable of playing uncompressed WAV files and Apple Lossless (which I use at home to backup my CD collection and broadcast around the house using AppleTV and Airport Express units). So I'm afraid your argument doesn't hold water in the slightest.

in fact most audiophiles cant tell the difference between compressed @ 192 and uncompressed...so i dont really understand what the big deal about this whole lossless thing is...

bottomline - a good set of headphones make a big difference.

I'm in for a set. I can't wait to hear them to compare to my Bose I bought.

I got the Bose at Best Buy when I was on vacation and desperate for something decent that was compatible with the first generation iPhone. Don't judge me. :D
