I really dont think they'd announce before jan 25th even if it were coming, because they don't want people to be in the 30-day-return-window for all the phones bought for christmas
I don't think anyone that set on getting a Verizon iPhone just started a new AT&T plan on December 25.

Will there be a lot of people who jump ship? Probably, but exceedingly few of them will do it mid-contract.

I'm thinking that the Verizon iPhone will be announced in January, but go on sale in June. Thus keeping in line with their traditional iPhone release cycle. It's hard to imagine Apple having two different release cycles for the same product in a year. That would really make things worse as the earlier release on CDMA would have any new features and the the later release on GSM would have to wait six months for their new features.
It's certainly possible that AT&T has renegotiated a time-limited exclusivity, such that AT&T gets the new iPhone in June and Verizon doesn't get the CDMA version until the following January. This could continue for a couple more years. Who knows?

Why would I think folks would be ticked off?

1. iPhone 4 CDMA release January
2. iPhone 5 GSM release June with NEW features
3. iPhone 4 CDMA owners have to wait an additional 6 months for their version of the iPhone 5 the following January.

Or flip that around and the iPhone 5 CDMA comes first in January and GSM users have to wait six months for their iPhone 5.

That's the point i am trying make.
No one said it's going to be released in January. Who knows it just might be announced in Jan but will be released alongside with the GSM counterpart. Wasn't the original iPhone announced announced in Jan but not released till later?

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will be giving a keynote address at this year's Consumer Electronics Show on January 6th, 2011 at 8:30am.

What the hell could Ivan possibly talk about other than his new iPhone?

That being said, if the Verizon version would be hitting shelves next month then some disgruntled Verizon employee would have squawked by now. (god knows there's plenty of 'em.)

Actually, a lot of people are. I think if they announce in Jan, it'll release in Jan or Feb.

Can't squawk about something you know nothing about.

That's exactly what my theory is. You may have missed my original post earlier in this thread explaining that part.

Sure it is. If not CDMA, we will see an LTE iPhone. It's simple matter of market demand. Apple won't ignore it forever.

I think you just invalidated your original argument.

Yes, it worked just fine.

Edit: I was on my Treo...from Verizon's website:

Have they begun to use Rev B in Korea now? Wasn't aware. Either way, I don't see this as an issue for making a Verizon iPhone that works in both.

By "Korean PCS" I assume you mean the 1800MHz network? Once again, not sure why this would keep Apple from creating a Verizon iPhone that also works in S. Korea.

What's the difference? If I buy a license from Qualcomm, Qualcomm is licensing it to me.

Wrong, Apple went with it due to AT&T being the carrier they signed with first.

Actually, Apple could try to develop their own CDMA tech for chips, but it would likely problematic as other manufacturers have found in the past (I think both Motorola and Nokia tried...but don't care to go back and research to verify). So yeah, Apple will most likely license Qualcomm's tech.

100% wrong. Saying it is an evolution of GSM only means that it came from the same group that developed GSM. However, it is 100% new technology. It requires entirely new switching equipment in each tower and the phone needs a new radio as well. There is no real "backwards compatibility". This phrase originally referred to handoffs from GSM to LTE and back. However, Verizon has worked with the 3GPP to get this same compatibility with CDMA.

I like your posts in this thread, as i've read catching up, you've made sensible logical posts and pre-empted what i was going to say, that Winona Northdakota has posted rubbish mostly.

Thanks. I try to make sure my responses are well thought out and backed by fact. I used to work in the wireless industry and I've continued to follow it since.

yea..... about that.....

try this!

Nice response! (URL not working though)

Apple would have to license the technology from Qualcom first. GSM, no, because it is a global standard and open source. Anyone can develop for it.

Only tiny pieces of it. To make a working smartphone with data, you have to pay GSM patent license fees. That's why Nokia is suing Apple. (If they win, look for Sony-Ericsson to do so as well, since they also have a large GSM IP.)

LTE is a evolution of GSM. It makes more sense to develop an LTE phone that Apple can deploy in as many markets globally as possible. No hardware change required since LTE is backwards compatible.

As Geckotek has already replied, this is quite incorrect. There's always hardware and software changes involved when adding a new radio air network.

4G is going to be a big talking point. I bet Verizon takes a few jabs at AT&T, because in two years Verizon will have more 4G coverage than AT&T has 3G coverage.

More like 6 more months. AT&T 3G coverage is pathetic. As with every holiday when I travel to something other than a large metroplex area, I found myself stuck on Edge again on Christmas.

(I'm exaggerating to express frustration, so don't take the 6 month comment literally)

so there is a lot of things happening in January/Q1 2011.... ipad 2, verizon iphone... verizon ipad 2..... mac app store..... could we be getting mbp update in april?

So then my question is how many media events will apple have? What announcements will be at each event? and when will these events be?

I don't think that Ivan will be announcing the verizon iphone january 9th, but I think there will be an apple media event right?

Mmh... Probably a new model???????

Yes it will be a new model. Dual Band CDMA Receiver. 3G and LTE. Eventually someday, there will be one phone for all networks.

The phone is coming to Verizon not because Apple fears Android, but due to Verizon realizing that they can't base their entire future on Android.

Verizon realized this last August and the process started on Apple's Terms.
Note the key wording, "Apple's Terms".

Verizon gets to claim the 1st LTE iPhone (at&t 2013 if lucky) and put more leverage on their Android suppliers.

Of course you will pay a hefty premium for LTE for a while. Actually, a VERY long while.

I love my 4 on at&t with 3G. Never have issues period. But choice is a good thing, and Jan 2011 will be an amazing month for Apple Evangelists.:apple:

I believe AT&T lies about their 3G coverage that they have.

In my hometown the coverage maps show the area blanketed in 3G coverage, yet there were many places where I was only able to get EDGE. My parents house, part of the campus where I was taking classes, and even the shopping mall.

I spoke with AT&T about this several times, and I finally got a tech to admit that "not all towers in your area support 3G". Their pathetic 3G coverage is even more pathetic considering it's not 100% in some areas they claim 3G is available.

My Verizon phone never leaves 3G and I travel quiet a bit.

Or the timing would help balance manufacturing demands.

I also think it would make economic sense. This would give Apple 2 times a year with a big spike in iPhone sales. The Verizon cycle and the AT&T cycle. Sure people will move from carrier to carrier, but there will be some stability and people will buy a new iPhone as their contracts expire and Apple releases new products.

"Yes we do need to keep the rumor alive. Continuous rumors means that there is an extremely large public consumer interest in the Verizon Iphone. Apple will notice things like this. It will continue to motivate them to make the rumor become a reality.

And as far as I know, At&t has been pushing other phones besides the Iphone more recently. A sign of losing exclusivity I think. And Verizon has stopped all the "there's a map for that" adds haven't they?"

Verizon stopped the ads when AT&T sued Verizon in November, 2009. Has anyone considered writing a letter to Apple concerning the making of a special iPhone for Verizon? Viral rumors and guerilla tactics do not prove in any scientific way there is any real public interest in anything.
Every day that the iPhone is not available on Verizon, Verizon loses more and more customers.

AT&T has slowly eaten away at Verizon's market share to the point where it's not really important for Apple to sign them. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick up T-Mobile instead.

What would be really funny is if Apple announces that they will be releasing an iPhone that supports both 3G and LTE and that it will be shipping in the Summer of 2011.

That would be the biggest ****** move ever and would kill Verizon's business for half a year.

93.2 > 33.81

and the most likely time for the Verizon cycle to start would be January!

I'm surprised this wasn't noted more frequently but one sign that the phone is finally losing exclusivity with AT&T is that when iPhone 4 was announced, AT&T allowed most existing users who's contracts were up in the next 6 months to upgrade to the new iPhone without any penalties or higher upgrade fees. This was something they had never done before with the iPhone.

At the time I thought it was obvious that AT&T wanted to lock in as many users as possible into a new two year contract. My theory was, and definitey seems to be coming to fruition, that AT&T was losing exclusivity around January (6 months after iPhone 4 release), and offered this too good to pass up deal to existing users. They figured there would be definite attrition to verizon (or whoever is getting the iPhone) and wanted to help reduce the loss of customers. Why else would AT&T change their policy on upgrading early? Especially since the deal applied to almost everyone, not just long time att customers.

And when no Verizon iphone arrives in January, everyone will be on to the Summer Verizon iphone rumor. And once again everyone will say "but these rumors are different. The Wall Street Journal says..." LOL

I look forward to 2012 when the iphone is available on other carriers. I just hope Apple sells the phone unlocked allowing you to choose the carrier you wish, even without contract.
