Logic Board no. 2, we'll see how long this lasts!

I'm getting my third Logic Board tomorrow.

1st: April '15, The GPU couldn't send a signla to an external screen. Although it did pass the VST test they replaced the Logic Board free of charge under the European Consumerlaw (average life-span based, and chips shouldn't die within 3 years).
2nd: July '15, The GPU began showing artifacts, it didn't pass the VST test and I recieved an replacement.
3rd: September '15, Whilst watching Netflix the Macbook Pro suddenly showed artifacts on the television screen and died on me. No signs of life what so ever.

This is the third and final strike for the Macbook Pro. I hope it hits a homerun and keeps on ticking for atleast another year (or two!).

Late 2011 MacBook Pro just bit the dust with the same display issues as described. Appointment tomorrow afternoon at the Apple Store. Bummer.

Good news was that :apple: replaced the logic board free, even though they weren't too sure what the issue was as it passed (failed) their test, what's the score with the unwritten rule for replacement after third repair, does that still wash with a OOW computer on an extension programme?

Collected the MBP from the Apple store yesterday.

Looks like a refurbished board and the machine still runs hot. They had to replace the top case as it was damaged during the repair.

They have also failed to connect the keyboard back light cable to the logic board (looks like its been tucked away under the fan) so it will need to go back in again!

15-inch, Late-2011 MBP retrieved from the Apple Store yesterday (although it was ready for pick-up two days earlier.)

The repair summary indicates the following parts were replaced:
Logic Board 2.2 GHz
Hard Drive 2.5 500GB 5400
Memory 2GB (x2)
MagSafe Board.

When I dropped it off last week we did a little dance over user upgradeable parts prior to the failed VST test, but it was obvious what the issue was:

I've re-installed both my 8GB Memory (purchased from OWC some three years ago) and my Samsung SSD 250 EVO and all seems well. Will retain the replacement parts they provided in the event the MBP is returned for a second repair. Plan to hold onto this MBP until the 2016 models are announced before deciding whether to upgrade.

Also mid-2012 non-Retina?

I am most definitely having this issue on my laptop as well, although I am one of the few folks that picked up the non-Retina 15 incher the Summer of 2012. Good thing, too, since I hear all the hardware issues with the Retina during that first year.

So my question is, any other non-Retina users during that time period having this issue? My serial shows up as not supported, but I am certainly having the problem.

Yes, I'm having the same issue! Just recently. If I'm running FaceTime or Skype for 20+ minutes it will reliably go to static/checkerboard distortion on the screen (and shrieking audio) for about 20 seconds, then spontaneously restart. Fundamentally the same GPU, same symptoms, but not supported by the program... WTF, Apple?

I am certainly aware of display issues that affected those machines, but I figure Apple wouldn't lump in a display problem on one kind of machine in with a GPU problem on another. Seems kinda odd if you ask me.

Also still burning with curiosity about the non-retina Mid 2012 15" and why they're (thankfully) not included in this repair program.

Why "thankfully"??? I'm not thankful to be having the same issues but not being supported...

Took my mid 2012 retina 15 inch mainly because of ghosting issues with my LG screen. Genius said it was quite obvious, and laptop was surprisingly ready the following day. While running their tests, video card issue detected, and logic board changed, despite never having seen any issues myself...
Strangely, the work confirmation email says nothing about the screen being replaced, and the ghosting is still equally bad! Dropping it off again tomorrow, curious about what they have to say...

Can anyone offer advice on the following? I just purchased a very lightly used (only 31 battery cycles!!) early 2011 MacBook Pro 17. It is eligible for the video card replacement. The previous owner hasn't had any issues. Should I bother with getting the repair done or is it just swapping the old part for an identical but newer part? Thanks.

So after negative feedback on the follow-up email Apple always sends, had a call from my local Apple Store this morning, to bring the laptop at my earliest convenience! :)
I tried to use the Terminal line to figure what screen I have (LG/Samsung), and it didn't work in El Capitan. Anyone knows what command to use now?

Just checking in here to add another case of personal experience. My 2011 15" MacBook Pro had intermittent issues with restarting randomly and strange video problems for a while, but it wasn't until upgrading to El Capitan that it became increasingly worse. By worse, I mean not at all functioning...could barely get it to boot and when I did, after 5 minutes I got the issue in the photo below.

I was aware of the Extended Repair Program, but didn't pay much attention till I was desperate. I brought it to the Genius Bar Yesterday, showed the pictures I had, the tech ran the diagnostics and almost immediately the graphics card failed as well as some others. She also mentioned that the display had a strange hue to it as well...but I'm colorblind and never noticed anything.

Needless to say, the whole experience took about 10 minutes and I was signing it away for repair. Looking forward to a functioning MBP again...and as soon as I receive it I will be upgrading to an SSD.

Hey guys, my 17in 2011 mbp is randomly choosing when it wants to send a signal to my thunderbolt display. Should I take my mac in for testing to see if I have a bad video card?

My 2011 MBP screen just went haywire. I'm bringing it in to get looked at but I took out the optical drive to put in another hard drive to make my own fusion drive. Should I revert it all back to normal hardware?

ruh roh.

MBP Retina 2012 2.7ghz with the affected Nvidia chip here. Reboots with Graphics kernal panic began suddenly and consistently (within 5-10 minutes of discrete graphics switching) about a week ago. Was glad to see a repair program in place and installed GFX in order to continue using the machine on the integrated graphics card.

But my problem is: I've moved to Zimbabwe, nearest Apple Store is thousands of miles away and the Repair Extension expires in 50 days. I may be able to make it state side or Europe side soon, but not within that time. Has anyone has luck from Apple in getting this date extended by showing them logs, evidence of failure or any other method?

Thanks in advance.

I would call Apple and request a postage paid box to send your MacBook Pro to the nearest Apple Repair Center.

Sending my 2011 17" Macbook Pro for graphics repair. Thank you all!!!!! Please advise!

Hi everyone! I try and keep up with forums and blogs, etc. relating to Apple and sound/video software I use. I wouldn't say I'm cutting edge by any means, but I like to know at least where the edge is, ;) I run Pro Tools a lot!! I am a music educator and professional performer/composer/mixer/arranger. I dabble in video production as well, mostly for fun and family though. But video of my daughter's basketball games has won high praise from a local TV sports producer!

My card started to fail about one week ago. I had heard about the Apple offer to refund those who paid for repair, and that Apple was fixing out of warranty issues as they occur. Contrary to the iMac hard drive repair a few years ago, I got no communication from Apple regarding this issue with the AMD card. In fact, while it was under warranty, I took the Macbook Pro in because I thought the fan noise was excessive, and that it seemed to run very hot. The fellow at the genius bar ran diagnostics, and assured me nothing was wrong, and that the sound and video programs I run tax the system, and it runs hot. So, two years later, it develops a video card problem. Thanks to you all, I knew about the program and did not hesitate to bring it in. It passed the initial AHT, but the fellow assured me that he thought it was video card related and that I should keep it with them for 48 hours--they would stress it and call me back. Well it failed. I had already backed up my upgraded SSD drive, but tha Apple tech warned me to remove my upgraded drive, because if any issue occurred during repair, they would replace the SSD with original spec HD, and discard it. So here I am at home, getting ready to swap drives and send it back.

I'd also like to thank James Woods for his heads up regarding the gfxCardStatus by Cody Krieger. (I picked up the Macbook Pro to take home-swap drives-return---but it will would no longer reboot. The YouTube video enabled be to get this puppy running 'til I take it in again). Many thanks to all of you!!! I feel like I'm benefiting from the collective turmoil of a great number of people.

I love my Macbook Pro, and believe me, it can't be replaced. The only thing lacking I believe would be usb3 to make it state of the art. Oh, and an effective heat dispersion system as well as a working discrete video card. The new ones lack an Express Card, have too few usb ports, and of course a smaller screen.

So, any tips? Any warnings? The tech at Apple has been very forthright. But should I be concerned that a repair might be attempted where they "heat up" the computer? Or are they replacing the AMD at this point? What about heat dispersion? Are they re-applying thermal paste? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you all for sharing your experiences and advice.

Tim

Having reinstalled the original 500gb 7200rpm drive and the original 2x2gb ram, I took it back to the Apple Store for repair today. Joe said avg. turnaround time was 5-7 days. I asked him about the practice of heating the laptop to repair, and he said that was something they never did. So i asked if they used third party repair companies, and he said no, all repairs are done by Apple. All replacement parts and techniques, including soldering are to spec. He really got specific regarding their repair procedures, but I was more interested in making sure my laptop would not be "super-heated" for repair. I'll let you all know what happens. I really feel indebted to those before me who had to put up with so much aggravation, etc. The Apple people have treated me very well so far.

Heres my story, reposted from reddit. Back in December, my MBP was occasionally displaying graphical artifacts; weird pixels, static, lines and my MBP screen would cut in half with a black line and move over to my external monitor. A display refresh or reboot cleared it up easily enough. At that point, I had been running 10.9 for quite a while so I was thinking maybe some drivers were corrupted or something. Decided to do a clean install of El Capitan on a new SSD and oddly enough, the graphics issues stopped for a few days.

But it crashed one day and I was stuck on the grey screen at boot up. Booting up the recovery drive displayed a blue pixellated artifacty screen which just hung there. At that point, it was probably the video card; the built-in hardware test doesnt do anything useful apparently aside from testing memory. Luckily, I had an older iMac that I seldom use to do a fresh install of El Capitan on the MBP's original HD (which I securely erased) and swapped it back in.

I knew about the 2011-2013 MBP replacement program that dealt with MBP's with video and graphics problems so after I put the original HD back in with El Capitan I took it in to my local Apple Store. I told them about the pixelated graphic artifacts and gray screen of death on bootup, had fresh install of El Capitan and original HD was in there. They did the 'MRI' diagnostic and it failed the VST test. The technician that helped me was pretty knowledgable; since it failed the VST, he brought up the replacement program (I didnt tell him about it) and I would get a free replacement if everything checked out (ergo no water damage on my part or anything). I asked about if the 'new' boards were refurbished and he stated that the new logic boards werent refurbished boards, they were an updated design to address the issue. I really hope that is the case since I heard lots of users state otherwise, that their replacement boards failed within weeks. After a few minor questions, I am now set to hopefully receive a replacement logic board for free next week. Will update once they get back to me within the next few days.

The '08 8600M GT failures were a joke.. so many machines failed. I don't know if it was Nvidia's fault or what, but there is definitely a recurring problem of graphics cards failing in MBP's. I seriously wonder if it is heat related...
It wasn't very many. Just ask a fanboy. And only 5 iBook G3s had issues. Only 5.

Also, Apple computers are the best, which is why you should only expect them to last 1 year. That's reasonable for a $2,000 laptop, right? Fanboys think so.

Come to think of it, every Apple device I've owned has had issues: iBook G3: video, Macbook Pro: video, iPhone 4S: wi-fi; my wife's old Macbook Pro (2007) had video issues, my wife's iPhone 3GS: rebooting when receiving a call about 30% of the time. Only Apple device that hasn't had issues is my wife's 2012 Macbook Pro (the one without the glued in battery). But I hear from an AASP friend that there are issues with the RAM slot in that one, so, soon we will have another. So between my wife and me, we are 4 for 5 on problems with Apple products, probably soon 5 for 5. Wow...

Guys,

I wonder if you can help??

A few weeks ago my machine (a mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15") started exhibiting some weird behaviour - the screen would go off for no apparent reason - and the machine would need to be hard restarted - and sometimes the screen would work and sometimes it wouldn't. Eventually all this re-bootign seems to have frazzled it altogether. Mac tlepeheon support couldn't help resolve it - and in the end it went into the store - and they flattened it and re-installed OSX - and claimed it was fixed. Anyway - its been OK for a day - and then this evening it crashed again and the screen went off - the following error report was generated? I am correct in thinking this is a Graphics GPU problem that causing the crash? and if so....is this likely to be a known fault ??...and if so - why didn't hey say anything to me in the store? Should I take it back to he store and ask for them to look at it again - I'm worried I reinstall all my hard fought data and software and then it crashes again and I lose the lot (again!) - thoughts:-

So I got my Macbook Pro back in two days-very surprising. They replaced the logic board. Now on the way in I noted that one of my chicklet keys was loose; still functional but loose. As long as it was functional, the tech said they'd take care of it. I figured some superglue or something. They replaced the entire top-aluminum and keyboard--the entire thing!!!! I know a lot of you went through a lot of aggravation over this, but Apple has treated me very well.

I've had it back since Tuesday Feb 2. And I have to mention that the computer is running much much cooler. The repair work carries a 90 day warranty, so we'll see how it goes. I reinstalled my Samsung EVO 1tb SSD and 8gb of OWC ram. So far so good. The replacement program ends in Feb, so if you're having or had any issues, I highly recommend taking it in.

Thanks to everyone!!
