I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro. I am extremely lucky that to this day I never had video issues that made it unusable. I'm sure the repair program is over so if it does happen, I'm moving on to the current model with Apple Care

My 2010 had the issue and they fixed it. My friend waited 3 more months before bringing his in and they refused to do it.

When I got my 2012 15" MBP I waffled over whether to go with the retina version and in the end did not. I wanted more repairability and ports. Boy am I glad I did. Sure it's big and not as nice as the retina ones but my video has never missed a beat. Plus I've been able to bump the RAM to 16GB and swap the DVD for a second HDD, all myself. Couldn't do that with the retina one.

Smug git!

hi guys I have a late 2011 mbp 15".
I have had for a while now random restarts, heat issues and graphics glitches on screen. I got it about a month after it's release so I know for sure I am not within the 3 year AppleCare warranty.
what are the chances I can have my mbp repaired?
it's kinda hard to get the issues to show up exactly when a apple genius is inspecting it.

Read the Apple article linked in the OP.

Did you do the repairs through Apple? Just take a breath and give them a call and you'll be surprised.

(Hint: Just did it)

Yeah, I did. But I'm not very likely to get a refund considering how hard I tried to get them to fix it under warranty only 15 days (yes seriously) after the warranty ran out. I've had to replace it out of pocket again since then. Apple dragged it's feet and refused to recognize this until they were threatened with legal action, I have no reason to believe they'll refund me a single cent.

----------

I have a question that might help frame this differently. Hypothetically, if a company produces a product that it sells in the US with a one year warranty, and 80% of them fail within 2-3 years, is the company under any legal obligation to compensate their customers for what might be described as a clearly defective product?

If you use certain credit cards the warranty is automatically two years I believe. Either way the warranty period really isn't the most pressing issue here, it's that Apple is only doing something about this because they were about to be sued over it. That's a pretty ****** thing to do to your customers that pay a premium price for your product.

----------

The foundation of Apple is built on giving customers the best possible experience. It's why they rank first in every customer sat survey you ever see. Apple goes out of their way to make each and every one of their customers happy. Just because it's taken Apple this long to conclude they needed to extend coverage for some customers, it doesn't meant they haven't been silently taking care of those who needed help and support FOR YEARS already.

Wow, that's some hardcore shilling right there. Apple ignored everything about this issue until the case for legal action came up. Only then have they responded. They didn't do this out the kindness of their hearts, they did it to avoid losing a ton of money in a lawsuit. This is not the first time they've ignored an issue like this until threatening legal action forced their hand.

----------

Eh.
They could have not done it, though there was a lawsuit in tow. I appreciate it as well.

They didn't do it until legal action was a threat. That's why they did it. Without the lawsuit they wouldn't have done it.

Only until 2016? Is there any sort of guarantee that the replacement logic board will fix this problem permanently? Do they, for example, use a different and more durable solder? (The solder was a theory as to what was causing the high failure rate)

I don't have any screen issues but I do have random reboots so I'll be looking into this.

No, these are the same POS motherboards going back in as came out. They are only replacing a known faulty component with another one. These issue won't be fixed permanently because the "new" logic boards they install are nothing more than refurbished ones that have already failed. They aren't fixing the problem, they are doing the bare minimum they can to avoid a lawsuit. Just like every other scummy business move made by every company in response to situations like this.

Will the replacement start in ALL other countries on February 27th? Or starting from that date other countries will be added to the list?

I have an early 2011 15 inch MBP, suffered radeongate with all the video issues, the random restarts, and now it only boots up to a blue screen... check my serial number and I get what pops up in this image...

Does anyone know what that means for me? Says nothing about being eligible for the replacement... I live in Chile... Maybe it will only appear as eligible to be fixed for free after the 27th of february?

Can confirm. Have had logic board replaced twice, outside of warranty, for free.

By repair they mean what? Replace the logic board with another ageing second hand board that will invariably fail for the same reasons?

Thankfully I got my failed GPU replaced and reballed (using better solder) for the sum of £200. From what I can gather it is pretty much the only permanent fix.

I'm surprised they are including the 2012 model of rMBP in this. Makes me wonder if it's worth getting the 750m in the newer model at all if there is a high chance it could fail like the 650m obvious is in the 2012 rMBP.

In my experience they needed a bit of prodding to get their act together. Upon initial inspection I was quoted around £500 to fix my MBP. After escalating it to a store manager and politely giving them the opportunity to assist with repair costs taking into account the purchase price and resultant expectations for the MBP, they then offered a no-cost repair under UK consumer law.

rMBP mid 2012 Ghosting

This doesn't include ghosting (temporary LCD burn in) on the rMBP mid 2012 model does it?
This has been bugging me so much that I almost never use the built in display anymore.
The Sharp displays they used for this model were apparently prone to ghosting, the Samsung equivalent were not though.

Also, I still got Applecare on it if that helps.

Cheers.

I'm on thin ice right now but I hope to god you're kidding.

Apple left this way too long to deserve that praise.

Read up on how well Microsoft handled the red ring thing and get back to me. They shipped everyone new ones, no questions asked, and paid the shipping both ways, and this was right as it was happening. They didn't wait 4 years to act.

You're blinded by Apple.

I had 3 of those red ring xboxes. I guess Microsoft didn't like me enough to offer the same deal they did to you. Yes I contacted support, around 7-8 years ago. Nothing.

Wasn't the X360 the most defective consumer product ever? Every X360 owner went through like 3 replacements.

no!!!! my 2010 macbook has the same issues but its not included! ****

Same here: screen suddenly turning black then automatic restart or Gray Screen of Death (with a twist since Yosemite: double restart, so no crash report to send to Apple, not that they care about them…), hidden windows showing strange artifacts (lines or triangle) when revealed, black screen when waking up from sleep…

Now that my iMac becomes less and less reliable too (freezes, black screen when waking up or just waking up the screen), I will have to buy a new machine soon.
But for the first time in 25 years, I will not be so happy and confident when I will buy this new Mac…

So... Are they still going to replace Radeongate affected ones with refurb logic boards that still contain the same manufacturing flaw (poorly applied thermal paste)?

I had my 2011 15" (2.3/16/512GB 840 Pro/1GB 6750M/AG screen) reballed with leaded solder and properly reapplied the thermal paste.

I had one die myself and a friend had two die. Microsoft not only shipped both of is a box to send it in for a brand new one, they did so on all three without a single question asked. They didn't care what serial number they had, where they were purchased or how they were purchased. We both called support and they said to give us their address and a new one was on the way. They even had the new ones delivered before the old ones made it back to them. Either you talked to the wrong person or you didn't actually call them. They were the epitome of perfect customer service when they initiated their replacement program. Hell, both of my friends 360's were the base model and they replaced them with the Elite version with the 250gb hard drive included as an upgrade.

That's the same screen I see. My system has random issues. Sometimes it doesn't happen for months at a time, and then all of a sudden it pops ups.
