Apple Introduces Option to Download iOS Updates Over 5G on iPhone 12 Models

In the UK, Vodafone now offers unlimited data on a choice of three different plans.
Starting from £22/month (or £11/month for the first 6 months), you can currently choose from the Vodafone Unlimited Max, Unlimited and Unlimited Lite plans. All of them will allow you to download as much as you like, with no hidden limits or fair usage policies.

I'll see if I can find it actually in my policy that was sent, dunno where the paperwork is.
When my internet is out my hotspot does both business and pleasure. Over Christmas for myself alone I downloaded a few games that came to hundreds of GB.
I didn't even bother checking what the others were doing.
5TB, no but a LOT of data is by no means beyond the bounds of possibility.

Vodafone have speed caps though

Unlimited data: available on Unlimited Lite Plan (max download/upload speed of 2Mbps), Unlimited Plan (max download/upload speeds of 10Mbps) & Unlimited Max Plan. Speed and coverage may vary by a number of factors. Terms at vodafone.co.uk/terms-and-conditions

I’m with three and have uncapped unlimited for £23 a month, with free upgrade to 5G on true unlimited

Since there is no 5G with both eSIM and rSIM.

US customer:
1. Take off regular SIM card.
2.
- T-mobile customer: wait 5+ hours to download iOS update on slow tiny B71 600 MHz nation wide (read “narrow” here) 5G
- Verizon customer: drive 1-5 hours to one of 12 major cities , connect to mm 5G. Do not move, stay next to the cell site, enjoy fastest ever 5G. Please wear PPE since other customers can download same time there
- Att customers, mostly the same like T-mobile, but spent 2-3 hours in preparation to switch to the applicable 5G plan. (do not forget to check your bill later)

3. Gently insert rSIM back into the slot and try not to drop the phone to break “toucher than ever “ geramic glass

Chinese customers with 2 regular SIM cards please enjoy 5G and download the update.

LOL 😂

Because many sane people don’t have any data caps and never understood why they can’t use their unlimited data as they see fit, for example downloading large apps or software updates.

also, Some people opt not have Wi-Fi and use a data plan only, these people should be able to toggle which ever option is most appropriate to them, this is one of my biggest general frustrations with apple, the whole 'apple always knows best', it should simply be that data usage is an issue for the user and the carrier, the phone and software should not restrict in anyway this process, i feel the same about tethering, the phone and software support it, the carrier should not charge for this and the total data allowance should be the total used.

People that don't have data caps with an unlimited plan, don't have WiFi nearby and/or have slow WiFi at home?

Also, I'd love to know if iCloud backup is possible over 5G.

But, will 5G plans include data caps? That is a huge capital expense on Verizon's part...that i would think the shareholders would expect it to be recouped.....just a thought.

Will iOS allow users to turn off 5G like it does LTE? Many consumers are worried about health risks from 5G
You mean consumers who listen to any conspiracy theory going? About 5G masts spreading Covid and Covid vaccine injecting you with a chip? Here's a secret: 4G masts have been spreading radiation that makes you gullible and prone to believing conspiracy theories, and for years. And either Joe Biden or Donald Trump is behind it. Or maybe both.

I don't know, but if you can live with a data cap, then you can live without 5G.

Actually, I work for a telecommunications company and 5G is safer than your average microwave, and current LTE wavebands. It's fake news.
Try explaining that to people here in the UK who try to burn 5G masts down. Or who attack or threaten BT employees. There was one guy burning a mast down, tried to call his mum to tell her about his big deed, and then complained because he got no phone signal.

Only the ignorant ones who troll that line of BS as Click-Bait, or tinfoil-hat, 5G RF Tower Conspiracy nuts who claim 5G brought forth the Covid-19 pandemic - both types of which can stay back in the 2010s where their feeble minds belong.
Don't you know? Covid is spread by 5G towers, AND it is a hoax. Some people have no problem believing both at the same time.

Too bad 5G doesn’t magically give me more data so 5G is pretty useless to me. The only thing I see it being good for is downloading or streaming stuff but I am sure as hell not gonna do that on our mobile data caps here in Germany 👎🏼
Not very useful for streaming either - if you stream music at 256 kbit per second you need 256 kbit per second. 2G did that just fine.

[QUOTE="MacRumors, post: 2908503According to an internal Verizon document obtained by MacRumors, the ability to download iOS updates over cellular is limited to 5G iPhones with the "Allow More Data on 5G" mode enabled. On all previous-generation iPhones, and on iPhone 12 models that are connected to an LTE network, downloading iOS updates will still require a Wi-Fi connection.

You have been able to download upgrades & updates to iOS over cellular in some countries for nearly a decade. It will be faster over 5G, and it’s new in the US market, but it isn’t new globally.

AT&T offer a number of data plans, they can choose the one that suits them. How is it any different from me downloading a movie to watch?
I paid for unlimited data for a reason.

Management at AT&T probably complain about your downloading a movie as well. 😁

True, yes, but the cost of - say - a 100GB plan in those countries compared to the US means that even when plans are capped, the cap is usually high enough (and the price low enough) to mean that there's effectively no difference between that and unlimited for many users whose usage isn't going to be anywhere near those caps (unless they're using it as their home Internet access). For example, I'm paying £15/m with a 100GB cap, I doubt I've ever come anywhere near that - I could probably survive with 20GB/month.

Thats so cheap! If you want a good provider here in Germany that has actually reliable service you pay 39 EUR for 6 GB ... true unlimited is 83 EUR

Here in Helsinki, Finland(Northern Europe) my phone using LTE is 100mbs download and 10mbs upload(speedtest) inside my apartment building, outside even better. I live 5.33 km (3.31 mi) from Helsinki city centre.

Also my cellular plan costs 27 euros(about 32 dollars) a month, true unlimited plan(max 150mbs download speed).
Example month of July i was using my phone plan only(for phone and laptop) and that months data usage was 301,08 GB, bill for that month was 27 euros including limitless voice and text :D
About typical phone plan in Finland 👍

So my feeling is iPhone download caps are there mostly for mobile network situation in Northern America :(
100%. Here in Espoo when we hear the term “data cap”, we just shrug and recall something we read in a history book

Or just toggle off the esim temporarily when you (1) are in an area with 5G and (2) you actually need the 5G.

I still don't understand why we aren't allowed to do this over LTE. It's my data, my cell phone bill, and I don't need Apple controlling either.

carriers probably don’t want you tying up the LTE bandwidth in your cell for an hour.

Sorry, but there is absolutely no urgency to do that on a data plan. That’s what Wifi at home with your iPhone plugged in on a night stand overnight is for.

I can't believe that Apple still restricts what can be done on the cellular network. Give users a warning about data usage, but I think they should be able to choose to use mobile data if they want.
WHY 5g is good and lte not sufficient for iOS update download and why Apple made the completely right decision on that
I still don't understand why we aren't allowed to do this over LTE. It's my data, my cell phone bill, and I don't need Apple controlling either.
There's likely carrier involvement and them not wanting to take a hit on their network bandwidth when a lot of devices might be downloading larger downloads simultaneously.

Not to suggest that American telecoms are good — because they aren’t; they’re terrible and their tactics, pricing, and customer service are extortionate — but the issues around data caps I think are more tied to a country’s geography than most realize.

Canada, USA, Russia, Australia — they all have massive hinterlands that require boatloads of towers to provide coverage for very very low population density. This is, in my experience, why data pricing tends to be so much higher there; “nationwide” roaming doesn’t come cheap.
