For Apple, ProductRed = ProductDead. It's a cheap way to excite customers about a product well into its sales cycle and pluck new sales. In other words, Apple doesn't need or want to use it's entire cache at launch so it holds this one out for when sales get sluggish. Nothing any company does is for consumer's convenience. It's to bolster its bottom line.
OMG - Please don’t disturb my fancy dreams.
I have been crying al morning - never realised I missed Bono so much...

Absolutely beautiful! I remember when I bought my space grey 6 Plus with the red Apple leather case. I always wished for the black front, red back combo. I am seriously tempted to get this phone despite having an 8 Plus now. And I mean SERIOUSLY tempted.

Its cos no one wants the 8 or 8 plus and new phones coming in a few months so not really worth it to me now do something like fix ios or release airpower

I'm starting to believe that they will only release the damn AirPower in September with the new Qi-compatible iPhones. Disappointing.

I don't understand the appeal of having this as a color, since most everyone uses a case and can just get a red case. I like that it supports [RED] but other than that, what's the appeal?

I certainly don't use a case. My phone is a glossy black iPhone 7 Plus -- the gloss makes it grippy enough that I never worry about dropping it. But even among those who do use cases, people definitely don't choose their phone color at random.

Product Red also sells in China as it is a colour that means good rather then danger. For example the Chinese stock market has red and green the othe way round. Where red means raise.

I think it is a move to pump a little more iPhone 8 volume. iPhone X should be doing fine and hence no need for the brush gold colour.

2 more months till WWDC, 5 more till another iPhone. Sometimes you felt things are slow, sometimes you just thought time is passing by ridiculously fast.

I doubt a new color really excites that many people.

Apple today introduced a (PRODUCT)RED edition of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, available to order on Apple.com starting Tuesday, April 10, after 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time, and in Apple Stores starting Friday, April 13.

PRODUCT(RED) editions will be available with 64GB or 256GB storage for the same $699-$849 and $799-$949 prices as the equivalent iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models in space gray, silver, and gold.

Notably, the red finish is complemented by black front bezels, compared to white bezels on the (RED) edition iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Otherwise, these are identical iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models as unveiled last September, with the new color introduced mid-cycle likely only to bolster sales.

Orders begin Tuesday, April 10 after 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time, with deliveries and in-store availability beginning Friday, April 13 at Apple Stores and other resellers in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

Availability in Brazil, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and other regions will follow later in April, with Chile, Colombia, India, Israel, Turkey, and more regions following in May.

Apple also introduced a new (PRODUCT)RED edition iPhone X Leather Folio, which will be available for $99 beginning Tuesday, April 10 from Apple.com, Apple Stores, and the Apple Store app around the world.

(RED) was founded in 2006 by U2 frontman Bono and activist Bobby Shriver to raise funds for The Global Fund, which helps people affected by HIV or AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in eight African countries, including Ghana, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia.

(RED) CEO Deborah Dugan:Apple has partnered with (RED) for nearly 12 years to sell a variety of red-colored devices and accessories. For each product sold, Apple makes an unspecified contribution to The Global Fund, raising over $160 million to date.

Apple's vice president of product marketing Greg Joswiak:Apple introduced a (PRODUCT)RED edition iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in March 2017. The special color was discontinued alongside the launch of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X in September 2017.

Ok that's beautiful.
Am I the only one who could do with a (PRODUCT)RED Edition of the iPad Pro?

Looks a lot better with the black bezels. Wish they'd have Product Red available at launch though instead of halfway through the product cycle.

Yeah, this.
I'd have bought the red version this time.
Since they introduced X I became annoyed by the bezels, and when the display is off you can't really tell where the black bezels are, while the white ones are always there. I love the red back and I'd have bought it in October, but of course I'm not going to change my iPhone just to get a new colour.

Nice looking phones, but as others stated above it is likely a marketing ploy to clear out inventory in anticipation of the next-gen coming this Fall. Phil Schiller claps his hands and the monkies dance.

I've heard of many people who like to go naked with their phone, especially people with AppleCare+ where the cost in case of accidental damage is negligible, or people in the iPhone Upgrade Program where they get a new phone 12 months later anyway. There is always a payoff between how much protection you want/need for your phone and how thin, easy and shiny you want it to be, and for people who tend to the second direction, the new color can absolutely be a big appeal.

It also doesn't strictly have to be one or the other. I oftentimes pull my 6s out of the Smart Battery Case at home where there's very little risk of damaging it, and slide it back inside when I'm about to leave home in the morning.

Apple went the extra step, which they did not have to do; and made the front "black glossy"! Wow! This just so cool! Wonder if the back side is glass? I am referring to the 8!

That is the reason Apple started making gold-tone iDevices. IF your premise was true then Apple would offer red from launch, at least in China, as that is it's most coveted market right now. Waiting until the device is practically "old hat" would be silly under your theory. Yes, red is popular in China. Lot's of other places too. But ProductRed isn't geared to sell merchandise in China.
