I doubt a new color really excites that many people.

You'd be surprised then. And you have pages here as anecdotal evidence. Color is a huge marketing button that many manufacturers in many industries use to pump up sales. The car industry is notorious for updating annual models with nothing more than color changes, and yes people will buy one year over the other, even at extra cost, because it's in the color they prefer. And quasi-lux makers like BMW and Audi even have "special" colors that cost a $1500 over the standard metallic paint PLUS its only available if you buy an upgraded trim line or bigger engine. Some of these colors are only shades away from much less expensive standard metallic colors. Yes, color does excite people, at least enough to make it worth companies while to offer them.

I like this but why don't they release it at launch? I am thinking about getting that Product Red leather case for my iPhone X. That will look pretty nice.

Nice looking phones, but as others stated above it is likely a marketing ploy to clear out inventory in anticipation of the next-gen coming this Fall. Phil Schiller claps his hands and the monkies dance.

Newsflash: there isn't going to be a next-gen iPhone 8.

I don't understand the appeal of having this as a color, since most everyone uses a case and can just get a red case. I like that it supports [RED] but other than that, what's the appeal?
Red and Black, it's a matter of taste. Makes it appealing, very appealing. Have a red leather case on my iPhone SE and I love it. Got a red braided Lighting cable also. Slick as hell.

Were apple to release an iPad Pro red... oh boi, my wallet would tremble.

I really should not be this excited for a new color. Is my Jet Black 7 Plus still the most beautiful iPhone? No, I really shouldn't care.

I tried that with the apple red leather case, its now discoloured and more black than red.

I wonder how much more could have been raised for this charity if the (PRODUCT) RED color option was available at launch. This looks much more like a marketing ploy to drum up mid-cycle interest as opposed to a genuine effort to support the charity.

Do you guys think we would see a totally red box, just like the other iPhone 8 boxes?

I think these phones look great. I don't understand why Apple would make someone wait 7 months after the new model comes out to get a red version. I feel like a lot of people would be happy to support the cause and buy red models if they were available at the same time as the new release. I know I would.
Dude, this! I would as well.

APPLE: you clearly listened to fans regarding (RED) with the black front. Now, please listen again: we love this phone, and the cause, but it makes no sense for us to wait 7 months for it. For the next iPhone release, please release (RED) alongside the other colors!

I don't understand why anybody is bothered by the camera bump, since most everyone uses a cases which completely hides the bump.

See what I did here? Given by how many people are bothered by the camera bump and by how many people care about what colours iPhones are available in, your contention that 'most everyone' uses a case must most obviously be wrong.

What inventory? All those surplus red iPhones they produced and are suddenly stuck with?

Seems people are also forgetting a portion of the profits goes to HIV research. So Apple not only has to modify their production lines to accommodate a new, limited edition color, but they also make less on each device sold. So they lose money twice.

Yup, sure sounds like “clearing inventory” to me.

Because despite what Tim Cook said, it was a sales disappointment and it's in the process of being discontinued, unlike the iPhone 8. :D

More lies.

A red MacBook or having red as the only color option, or just giving away money for every device sold would also give them more money. Instead, they chose to launch the red phone on a day with no other launches, making it just about the cause. That's great marketing for the cause, gives it great exposure.

It sounds as if you don't understand why anybody would wait for seven months after the new model comes out before getting it (if it weren't for the imposition of having to wait for the red version).

Maybe two-thirds of all iPhones are bought outside the launch quarter [of new phone models or 're-launches' in the form of a lower price for older models]. These two-thirds of iPhone buyers all have their various reasons why they buy their iPhone outside the launch quarter. Offering them something at least somewhat new-ish is a service to this clear majority of iPhone buyers.
