I don't understand the appeal of having this as a color, since most everyone uses a case and can just get a red case. I like that it supports [RED] but other than that, what's the appeal?
Took my case off after a long time of using cases. Really enjoying the feel and beauty of the phone. If I drop it and get it repaired I'll return to using a case :)

I think these phones look great. I don't understand why Apple would make someone wait 7 months after the new model comes out to get a red version. I feel like a lot of people would be happy to support the cause and buy red models if they were available at the same time as the new release. I know I would.

Red at launch could mean about 20 to 25% of iPhone sales.
Apple doesn't want to donate 5% of that much money.

Now things have settled, most iPhone's of this cycle have been sold and - important! - most people won't realize there is a new color or won't care because it's late. Just remember how much hype and press every new iPhone color gets at launch.

That didn't answer my question: Why should I care about AIDS in AFRICA over people with AIDS in AMERICA?
Interesting question.
My take:
Both Bono & Apple seem to favor Africa over the 1st world - as they are both evading taxes in the West, as has been extensively documented.
That's a sign of selective social commitment - thereby showing their contempt for societies where they find most of their customers.
Doing their regular duty apparently is a bridge too far, or might offer less publicity/attention value/marketing opportunity than going (RED)

Product RED isn't made primarily because it sells well in China. But that is a nice side-benefit and makes the decision to release a Product RED phone easier. Very few things are done for a single reason only. Single reasons can tip the balance for an individual, but even then other reasons are usually required as supporting material. But more importantly, these decisions aren't made by a single person, and different people involved in the decision have often have different primary motives.

Yes, there are alway ancillary effects to anything any person or entities does. Some are unanticipated, other's known consequences. But when it comes to ProductRed, it's something Apple has a long history of involvement that reaches back to when the ProductRed effort first started. Apple was a "charter member" so to speak.

As someone mentioned, it doesn't have to be either / or.

Honestly, a person could care about both.

However in terms of Product Red, that particular organization partnered with certain companies to raise money & awareness for 8 countries in Africa. (And the Product Red phone is also available in other countries as well, so it's not an US exclusive). So that's where their focus is.

When it comes to charities & helping people, there are plenty of opportunities both home (wherever that may be for you) & abroad.

If you didn't want to support product red, there are other companies that support the cause in the US.

But again, it doesn't mean you have to CARE about one over the other.

Anyone helping anyone else is never a bad thing :)

This ALMOST makes me want to leave my X and go with the 8 Plus in Red.

Same but I like the OLED way too much. Helps with battery life savings. I would really miss the tap to wake and would be kind of difficult to adjust back.

Only if the X had a Product Red option too cause I would TOTALLY go for that.

Might order the RED tomorrow just for kicks! It will be the 8, not the huge +! I have 14 days to return it too! Expensive toy since I have the X already! LOL!

Does anyone think this will be hard to pre-order tomorrow like a normal new release? Anyone remember if the 7 in Red was back-ordered?

Sure but I don’t see this as some evil or sinister thing. At least I’m not cynical about it like some here are. If someone wants a red iPhone now they can get one. I don’t see the big deal.

Neither do I. I'm not sure how you inferred what I wrote was to suggest Apple is being evil or cynical here. Donations are donations. Never a bad thing even if it does boost sales of a product.

Businesses have product plans. They don't push out all options at once. That's just smart planning. But if ProductRed wasn't a big deal, if it's licensed products didn't raise enough revenue or awareness to be worthwhile it wouldn't exist. It is a big deal. Apple says it's raised $160m lifetime for the charity. That's just a slice of the overall revenue from those products and doubtful the whole profit. Some people do hold out because they are bored with the stock colors or waiting for red. Apple understands marketing over everything else.

I really wish they'd give the red option when the phones are initially released. I'd buy one of these for my wife to replace her 6s, but now it's too late in the product release cycle for me to consider. Case color seems an odd reason to buy a phone already more than halfway through its product release cycle.

You know, this is fabulous. People were asking for a red iPhone X and here you have it! Put the red cover over your current iPhone X and voila: the iPhone is red.

We keep asking for faster mac minis. I believe, Cook will mount a mac mini on a Space X Falcon Heavy rocket. During liftoff he can say: Look, how fast is that mac mini? It's unbelievable..."

The wandering into the philosophical aspect of business practices and donations to charity is ambiguous.

Mosquitoes and viruses don't respect national boundaries; what happens in Africa eventually happens in all inhabited continents, just like how HIV went abroad from the advanced nations.

Why fill the coffers of the governments more with revenue from products made (predominantly) overseas, when the money ends up more in the top 0.001% pockets or gets spent on more wars?

The Red product has a singular charity - places which need this small fraction of overall available charitable funds. Better than selling weapons to these nations indiscriminately, weapons they will never be able to manufacture.
