They don't make iPhones slow. They have some the fastest performing smart phones on the market with the A-series chips. Let's not blow this out of proportion just because of what you're reading from some users on a tech forum. There is a world outside MacRumors and those will never notice these types of tendencies at all.

But they do make phones slow. They slow down the clock speed. And then it's not one of the fastest performing phones on the market. Not even within its own generation of competitors.

The thing is, no other manufacturer of smartphones has ever had to implement a throttle to keep phones from suddenly shutting down due to battery voltage. Three and four year old phones running at the same speed as new without shutting down even though the battery is degraded to the point that it will only hold a charge for 4 or 5 hours. So what is the design flaw in Apple phones or batteries that is causing them to shut down.

design flaw = design feature

I'm just blown away that Apple had the balls to do this. With million upon millions of Apple phones sold around the globe every year, they are dissected, dropped, bent, scratched, ran though every bench mark software available, scrutinized to death - how could they possibly think this isn't going to get discovered? And it is the type of scandal that could take out a huge chunk of their devoted fans for good.

Bold move to the point of stupidity.

But they do make phones slow.

Not the point I was making. iPhones in general are some of the fastest performing phones with tasking and processing power. I mentioned this before with the A-Series chips and overall architecture are incredibly powerful. And they have been for years. The throttling issue is a side point, but it doesn't mean the iPhones in general are 'Slow.'

True. Although my 6S still performs great, I do agree I wouldn't want to buy an expensive phone that becomes laggy in a year (try asking Samsung users :D)

I also have a 6s. What these reports indicate is that the 6s won't continue to work great. And it's due to artificial software intervention. And it may not be long from now. And it may be at a battery level that would still get me through many days.

There is no design flaw. Substance over form , It’s planned obsolescence.

I've always heard "Apple's iPhones are too expensive. You can get a phone that does the same things for half the price..."

Then I hear "Even poor people working at McDonalds have iPhones..."

Can we get a clear message here? :p

I know, I know... Apple has a range of iPhones now. But still... it's funny.

Regardless of tier intentions Apple has done wrong here, and fattened their pockets. I have considered their explanation (after denials and then being caught) and they ring hollow to this engineer.

I see no point in arguing with apologists; fools abound and are incurable. The explanation was intended for them and clearly Apple thinks they are a majority.

Apple may pay a legal price, possibly, even probably - but that is not particularly important to a multi-billion dollar entity. Image is. Apple banks on image, not tech.

What is important is the bald faced demonstration that they are amoral, dishonest, and disrespectful of their customers. This is going to bite them in the ass next iPhone season. The Samsung commercials should be ... interesting. I bet they're feeling it already.

Personally, I have a throttled 6Plus, my final iPhone. I will not lick the boots or fatten the purse of these vermin.

Apple enjoyed a brief and shining moment in the Sun. It passed with Jobs.

Are you for real? You seriously believe you’re in the majority and that this will even be a blip on apples sales? You’re delusional.

Whether Apple could have handled it better or not is open for debate. Some people just don’t care that it takes an extra half a second for you to launch your call of duty game. The only people who care are the VERY small minority who get on a chat room and complain about their phone geekbench scores. Seriously. Read that again.

Go outside. Live your life. Your geekbench score will still be ok. #itsjustaphone

For all those saying Apple will lie to you about the status of your battery.

If you own an affected device then walk into any Apple store and ask them to test the battery in front of you.

Just as they do with MacBooks etc it’s quite clear to see if the battery is in a poor state of health. It’s coded Red, Yellow and Green,

Red means faulty/degraded replace FoC.

Yellow means Faulty/degrading out of warranty replace for a fee.

Green means it’s ok.

If they tell you they can’t do the test then they are lying as I had one done on my MacBook Pro and my 6 Plus a while ago. Both tests took about 2 mins each and resulted in my MacBook battery being replaced (69% health after 186 charges according to coconut and dropped straight into red for the Apple test) and my 6 Plus reporting fine (93% health after 227 charges according to coconut and finishing green in the Apple test)

I have a SE that I bought as a back up device that showed green last night when I contacted AppleCare support , coconut battery shows 83%, geekbench ~1700. Yes, ~30% throttling for a battery that is healthy according to Apple. I am an avid Apple user, haven't used any other phone ever, owned every iPhone ever released apart from the 5C, been using their computers since 2006, but I am not at all Happy that a phone that passes Apple's battery test is being throttled. What gives? And Apple subreddit is full of people having similar results.

It doesnt seem like this a part quality issue... batteries wear out and we use our phones constantly....

Except that, before this throttlegate news happened, Apple has already admitted "a very small number" of iPhone 6s models had defective batteries and issued a recall. [1] Also, batteries in earlier iPhone wear out but didn't need this software cheat that throttles the cpu.

You mean after "antenna-gate"? it's the perfect analogy, that led to "you're holding it wrong".

Good luck on your next phone purchase. You should be happy with the company and phone for your next purchase. Let us know what you wind up by acquiring.

Slower phone or dead phone, take your pick.

My one experience is my 6s is as fast as the day I bought it.

Early indications are that this is not limited to phones about to shut down, or that have critically poor battery health. It's being done on phones that may still make it through the day, or might require an extra charge.

I wonder if you'd hold the same position if your Mac had its performance massively cut back, and plugging it in didn't address the throttling, and there was not an override switch. To top it off you may have felt that its battery performance was still adequate.

My 6s is great, too. But it's only 6 months old. I foresee premature throttling related performance issues.
