Could the "and touch" imply a touch sensitive bezel that acts as a home button? Weren't their patents for this a while back?

I think that would clash with a lot of cases. I'm not saying Apple would ever do it, but the tougher 3rd party cases a lot of people use might not fair so well with said bezel. Apple's smart cover wouldn't interfere though I guess.

that is ipad 3

the picture you are looking at is ipad 3. you can see the high resolution retina display, and u can also see the larger screen. if u have an ipad a finger is going to take up a whole icon, in this picture it takes half an icon. so the screen is bigger.

Did anybody compare the background image (raindrops..) to the ones on his iPad2 to confirm it's an iPad the same size as iPad2?

Yes it would hurt sales if they replaced it right now, it would hurt sales, usability, affect learning curve for people to know the device, remove a staple of design from the product and completely redefine the whole line up which is very premature. If you were older you 'd also probably be wiser to understand this. There's a reason why Jobs gradually introduced people to the technology via the phones and then the ipad. People might know a bit more than you do on certain issues because they have more experience and insight, if that authority pisses you off too bad, cause that's just how it is. Try to learn from it instead of acting like a brat.

First of all, I'm not a kid. Not even a young adult for that matter. And while I might not have owned an Apple I or II like you, I have owned many Apple products including the original iPod and iMac. And I have also been following & interested in all of Apple's products for a long time. So your "authority" doesn't impress or intimidate me one bit. In fact, If you know Apple so well, you wouldn't be saying with absolute certainity that Apple was going to do (or not do) anything. Because the truth is, you really have no clue.

Secondly, you also don't know Apple to well if you think they couldn't change that home button and still maintain that "staple" look and design. It could be done very easily. And I'm sure if Apple did change it, it would be done right. Just one simple example would be a capacitive home button that lit up under the glass and only performed the same function that the current push button does. That wouldn't change anything. Same look, same function, different technology. That's far from "redefining the entire line"...Its just making the technology better. And they take that steps further and have it rotate with you as you turned the device, incorporte gestures, etc. etc. all without changing a damn thing about that "signature look". Let's face it, the way the home button exists today is not exactly at the forefront of technology. In fact I bet it's the #1 problem part on both the iPhone and the iPad. They break down or wear out constantly. It's due for a change. Just because your vison of a button-less iPad looks and works like the capacitive buttons on a Galaxy Tab, doesn't mean that Apple would present it that way. I'm sure Apple knows exactly what that little circle with a square inside represents. But it for sure doesn't have to be presented as a clumsy, phsical push button in order for the public to identify with it. I think we both agree that the physical button is doomed at some point in the near future. What is wrong with right now?

Am I the only one seeing this invitation as being possibly fake?
I see exactly what you're saying -- as far as that hand being really in the same photo with the iPad, I believe that it is fake. If this were for an actual ad, I think Apple would've made sure the reflection was a true reflection, but this being an announcement of a keynote, they thought the "reflection" looked good enough. You are right, I believe that the hand is a separate photo and that the reflection is simple the hand mirrored and 180˚'d

That being said, I think the iPad is an actual iPad. Perhaps this was done so some slight blurring could be done on the everything but the DATE Calendar icon so that it would really stand out. Perhaps the blurring is real but... maybe not.

I love how its the Maps (cupertino address) icon then the Calendar icon (Day of the event) and then the Keynote icon (denoting a keynote)... these people are clever!

I have the feeling there's something more than just a faster iPad with a retina display. The invitation says that's something we have to "see" and "touch". Don't be surprised if we see more ui changes.

That’s kind of my contention. Apple’s marketing communications are very frugal with language, so to just add “. And touch” because it’s a device with a touch interface seems curious. Plus that period break for impact.

That really seems like it suggests there’s something about the physical nature of the product beyond the obvious “it’s a tangible product/touch interface so you can touch it”.

Weight, size, surface material, extension of the touch interface ... or maybe a sly reference regarding another product (iPod Touch) [?]

I really do hope Apple keeps the home button on the iPad 3, even if I use gestures as well. But if Apple does remove the home button from the next iPad, you could probably differentiate from the iPad 1 and iPad 2 easily.

Is this a real iPad 2?

Or has it been photo-manipulated? Is it a render?

...

It's gone on too long. The comparison pics have been posted. The red lines have been drawn. The replication shots have been taken. The postulations have been expounded upon. It can be witnessed in the 1000+ posts in this thread.

All tangible evidence, such as product parts, point to the existence of a home button on the new iPad. The image in the invite suggests an iPad with a retina display, which will be the most important feature of the new iPad. The image may not be real. It may be doctored. It may be that we can't see the home button because of some mystical illusion.

No one of reliable repute has suggested that the next iPad will lose a home button. I've looked.

The horse is dead. We don't need to beat it anymore.

I THINK THEY WILL ADD PRESSURE-SENSITIVE TOUCH TECHNOLOGY.

Think about it, they have always released software with iPads.

iPad 1: iwork suite
iPad 2: garage band, imovie
iPad 3: iPhoto/Aperture

They will want to show off the retina display, and what better way to do this than with a photo app. Add pressure-sensitive touch technology and you would have an amazing device with awesome functionality for photo editing.

And yet people whining about it is okay? I can't believe you're actually wasting time complaining about something so silly. And bandwidth? Really? The pic is likely well under 100K. Are you on 28Kbps dial-up?

And since I run with Flash blocked and scripting blocked for third parties, ads don't really bother me too much anymore. :D

Ever tried to load a webpage on an EDGE connection? This site isn't just desktop users.

Retina iPad should support Retina iPhone apps

Heres something I expect to see in iPad 3 that no one has mentioned. You know how on the iPad you can run iPhone-only apps, and you can enlarge them 2x but most of them look awful? Jagged text, pics and controls. But now, with the retina display on the iPad, it could support such apps in retina mode and those should look pretty great!

What are the chances we will be seeing a developer preview of iOS 6 at this event. It sort of feels like the perfect opportunity to share that. If iOS 6 is announced next Wednesday, then all signs point to a summer 2012 launch of the iPhone 5.

No, but I'm sure we will get ios 5.1 and it will have some sort of surprise. Usually, apple releases beta version of iOS something like every two weeks or so to developers, but they haven't given out a new beta in some time. This often happens right before release, but it's been so long this cycle that I feel they are holding some things back, that they put in but want to spring on us at the announcement. Like Siri, or well, many other possible things.

Wish and prediction

Everybody is so focused on the home button. What about new software?

In the same way Apple introduced Garage Band and iMovie with the iPad 2, I think this time they will launch Aperture for the iPad 3. The holy grail of the photo apps. Retouch and upload your imported pictures to your photo stream and Flickr accounts. A 9.7 inch retina display to work with your pictures by touch interface? That would be beyond awesome.

Aperture for iPad is my prediction. You read that here first.

Why is that an iPad?

Just to go in a completely different direction...

Why couldn't that be a touch-screen enabled MacBook Air screen? The foreground is about the right color to be brushed aluminum.

(just wishing!)

Wedgier!

Seems to have been quite a lot to support this. Also there've been 2 generations of iPad following essentially the same form factor. If Apple's approach to iPhone follows through to the iPad, it would suggest that this, third gen model would be in line for a more fundamental change in appearance. (And performance of course!)

Again, possibly a bit of a reach but 'going retina' could also prove to be a good time for a visual update as with the iPhone. Certainly Apple will want a reasonably clear differentiation between the old and new this time round.

Loosing the home button in conjunction with a wedge form would make a degree of sense in as much as it would mean that the simple act of holding the device would tell you which way is 'up' rather than needing the home button for orientation.

Okay you just MADE MY DAY!!!! Im like the only one who still wants and cares about it being thinner and lighter...I really hope for this...all of the other features sound amazing but your right...you need to be able to distinguish the iPad2 from the iPad 3 and this will be allowed...by a thinner design! Thank you sooo much :D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:D:apple::D:apple:

Would be great (I have an ATV2 as well), but probably very unlikely. If there is an ATV store on the way it's most likely to be ATV3 only. Backwards compatibility isn't great for hardware sales. :(

Since they'd be making 30% of every app I buy, I'm guessing they won't mind not making the $40-50 they'd earn on a new aTV purchase. Also, getting people investing in apps is a great way to lock them into your platform.

Maybe the hand is in a galaxy far, far away.
