I think the 1 probably means nothing - just some Apple designer enjoying watching us all trying to interpret it.

If anything, I think it just represents a notification - e.g., "you've got a message" which is what this invite is after all...

Yes, I agree. People like to believe in nothing.

Well, the invite has certainly got everyone trying to interpret it like it's a stinking Rorschach test.

In a week we will all know. One of the biggest issues with society today is the need for immediacy. Life will go on if we don't know what Apple does for another week. At least I hope it will.

Next week at this time, we will all know and can buy it or not.

I am certainly looking forward to upgrading to a new iPhone, but the suspense isn't going to kill me.

If this is the most important thing in a person's life, that's pretty sad.

All things in good time.

shut up man! don't be an idiot like a guy named "sulpfiction" on these forums

One of the programs featured in the event could likely be Navigons MobileNavigator for iPhone 2.0 update that is said to "launch sometime in September or October"

Ok, so on this side track, do you know if Navigon is going to charge for this update (like is it going to be considered a new app)? It looks enough of a change that I could see them justifying it being a new app rather than just an update (but I have to admit it would be really awesome if it is an actual update rather than new app).

That looks really nice.

I wonder if they address the fact the directions don't tell you what side of the street your destination is on until after you've either already seen it or you are in the middle of passing it cause you didn't know which side to look on.

I thought the 1 on the phone was indicating that Apple isn't that crazy ex who leaves you 20 voice messages over the course of a day. That means Steve Jobs won't be at the event.

today is the 27th day of the 9th month. So that clearly means there will be 3 flavors of the next iPhone.

My iPhone 4 is on eBay right now with 2 days left on it. Currently $310. :D
It will probably end at around $500. If they offer iPhone 5 in 32GB/$199 and 64GB/$299, I'll stick with the 32GB. 32 has been enough for me with the iP4. I'll profit on the whole deal! :apple:

Launch Code

Anyone else think the clock shows the actual launch date of availability? I know the keynote will be 10:00 (Pacific Time) but I can also see a hidden message there 10/12 :apple:

The 1 in the phone icon is for a "missed" call ... so it represents the number of "missing" iPhone 5s by Apple employees. :)

4S or 5, I'm buying either way but I'm looking forward to hear when it'll come to Canada. Hopefully it'll be released by late October or early Nov by the latest and otherwise I'll may have to lineup in the snow.

Or one message, as in you have one message waiting on 10/04....

talking iPhones (hello siri + nuance)!

and turn-by-turn navigation! (map icon!!!)

I don't think that's what the map icon means. I'd love turn-by-turn, but I don't think it's coming - Apple will turn to the AppStore to provide that functionality.

That being said, iOS maps is way behind Androids maps app. That is exactly the reason Apple doesn't want to use Googles services. The vector maps on Android look superb and load almost instantaneously, they have 3D buildings and offline caching support, not to mention turn-by-turn.

I believe Apple control the actual application (so only they can do things like manual two-finger rotation gestures), but the data they get is from Google, and limited by what Google will provide them. Unfortunately, since basically all the providers are 'hostile' (I.e. compete in smartphones, too), the long-term solution that allows Apple to innovate seems to be to do it themselves.

Personally, I think Apple should buy TomTom. They're cheap because the sat nav business is failing, but they recently bought TeleAtlas (for more than their combined current mkt cap). TA has huge mapping resources data, and actually license a lot of it to Google. Instant competitiveness for maybe €1.5Bn. They could even split off the satnav business to recoup some of that, or just use their offline routing algorithms and IP to improve the maps app yet further.

Any four icons arranged in a square indisputably says iPod nano to me. From the icons shown, it looks like we're getting a clip-on iPhone nano!

Pity there's no FaceTime icon. I guess that's next year ;)

This is how 9/11 conspiracy crap happens. It's a simple invitation. Date/Time/Location. THATS IT! It's not some ****ing Dan Brown novel!

The iPhone 4(Oct)

Ok so the 1st icon (calendar) likely hints that the next version of the phone is a variant of the iPhone 4. Then there is the fact that there are only four icons, and that the event is being held on Oct 4th. Not to mention the 1 on the 4th icon (phone) suggesting a single phone to be announced. I guess there has been so many rumors about an iPhone 5 that Apple may be tempering expectations that there will not be an iPhone 5 announcement made at this time. Personally, I was so looking forward to a larger display that I was hoping that the one on the 4th icon signified the old, "Oh, and there is one more thing".

You realize people are just having fun here, right? Breathe in.. Breathe out...

That does not represent a "missed call". Have you ever had any missed calls ?

I have.. A few and when i click on the phone icon the "notification number" goes away.

The "1" badge represents a notification of a NEW call.

Okay... just briefly: you are welcome to debate why the 1 on the phone icon, but come one folks, the other stuff is not a mystery. The map doesn't indicate turn by turn direction functionality, it is the location of the event. Notice its similarity to where 1 Infinity Loop appears on a map...

The Calendar icon -- "Here, Apple is telling us that there will be "tues" ("two" in some ancient foreign tongue lost in history) devices to be announced. The number 4 is below the word Tuesday, indicating that both new iPhones are 'raised above' or more capable than the iPhone 4. Some might say that this is indicating the date of the event, but there's much more to this icon than meets the eye."
