yes but in the grand scheme, what percentage of buyers are like ya'll with 100GB+ libraries and an obsessive need to have it all in your pockets all the time.

It's not that obsessive...the way iTunes works if you have a bunch of Smart Playlists and do anything sophisticated with them you basically have to sync your whole library to get things to work right on the device. You can uncheck a bunch of songs but then they won't play in iTunes either....or you can continually uncheck/recheck which is a PITA.

People with large libraries don't necessarily just sit around thinking randomly of some 'obscure' song they want to play...many have sophisticated playlist schemes that work better the larger and more diverse the library is. It's like having a bunch of radio stations that all play great music but are all different, some play top hits, classics, or things that you haven't heard in a while if ever.

God forbid anyone might want to use lossless or have a bunch of videos as well.

I think it's pretty sad that they went from 160GB down to 120GB and have stayed there. It's kind of an embarrassment that will hopefully be rectified very soon. I personally suspect they had to recode the Classic OS in order to handle increased capacity.

iPhone OS 3.1!!!

I also see an 8gb 3gs replacing the 3g, still @ $99.

All the Ipods will drop in price, capacities will double in touch.

The one thats up in the air for me is whether or not they'll expand the app store for the nano. They must still sell more nanos than touches, and at lower margins. throw wifi in the things and away you go.

Thoughts?

Will you still eye me

i think you mean 'i me'

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure why so many people insist/hope/want (whatever) Steve Jobs to come back at one of these events.

because they still think that Apple and Steve are one and the same.

He took a hiatus, and the stock is now at nearly $170 without him being the visible front of the company.

but unlike a retirement, he was still involved. okay so it was by email and ichat and the like and not on campus every second. but you can bet he was still voicing his opinions and was still informed of everything going on.

that said, technology like this doesn't happen overnight. it takes years to have the idea, design it, patent it, prototype etc. at the very least it's many months. Apple probably has the next 3-5 years of designs already in play and a game plan for the future going out a good 8-10 years. and the folks running the show were hand picked and trained by Steve, so they get where he's going and they think Stevethink. they aren't going to suddenly turn a 180 the second he's out of the picture. Apple is going to stay Apple, for a while at least.

Personally, I wouldn't mind it if SJ is done with his events. The company has to move on at some point. It seems like it's already on a good roll and I'd like to see that stick as we go forward. Hell, he could actively be doing more (doubtful) now than he was before as long as his visibility is down and it looks like the company is performing without him I'd be happy. At some point we have to get past this 'SJ = Apple" idea... even if it has been true in the past.

Just not sure what some people are thinking.[/QUOTE]

I'm not sure about that...I remember reading an article where Apple was like "yea, iPod nano and classic sales will drop as iPod touch and iPhone sales grow, we're fine with that. There were 30 million iPod touch/iPhone users by the end of 2008. iPod took until '07 for 100 million. By the looks of that touch/iPhone is out doing it(admittedly those aren't really good ways to compare, but I'm tired and would rather not find hard numbers)

OLED
different backing
bigger case for a bigger battery
compass in the touch

I agree there's not much more they can do. after that all you have is Radio and all these little mini add on features that'll make the iPod bloated. however right now they can go beyond the simple camera and mic

Since the iPhone doesn't have OLED, neither will the iPod. iPod has never had hardware-features that iPhone does not have (apart from bigger storage-space). And why should they put in a bigger battery? The battery is not a bottleneck in the device, so they do not really have a need for beefier battery.

Compass could happen though,

Not really true. Last year's iPod Touch had a faster processor than the iPhone 3G that was released a few months before. I'm not saying OLED is going to happen, but it's not impossible.

All I want is a camera and a microphone (at the bottom for leaf Trombone please)

and a faster processor. my iPod touch can't even Run AP mobile it'll just crash

I'm sure we'll also see a compass and the new fancy oleophobic screen coating that'll wear off if you have OCD with the Flick Fishing app.

Radio and OLED along with GPS probably won't be seen this year

EDIT: also a better speaker. it sucks so much when I'm trying to demo a game or show a video and my friends can hardly hear and the kids across the room have their tiny Razrs and PSP with speakers so loud. I don't care if they must make holes in the back. I don't care if they have to make it thicker and give it a speaker grill like the iPhone. just give me a better speaker Apple. Thanks for reading my rant

iPod Shuffle with a Projector?

What would be cool would be an iPod Shuffle with a pico-projector built-in and software that would allow you to project your photos and videos onto any surface. :D

What is up with all these 64bit version of this or that requests? Do you people realize what it even means for a program to be 64bit? It does not provide any speed advantages what so ever, it just means it can access more than 4 gigbytes of memory in one go. You know what, the day iTunes even thinks about using 4 gigabytes of memory is the day I nuke it off my system.

In fact, if anything, 64bit programs have more bloated memory usage than their 32bit verieties because increased pointer and data sizes.

I suppose you never used Mathematica.

They just updated headphones last year, and I am overall happy with the In-Ear Headphones, although they seriously need a boost in the bass department and should be black.

I think Apple should quit the earphone business altogether and only sell their standard white earphones, not in-ear ones. Anyone who is remotely interested in HQ sound from iPod already buys a 3rd party in-ear-phone which sound much better than Apple's offerings at a lower price. Apple can't specialize at everything.

Anyone notice that the ipod in the image on the front screen has the connector for the 3.5mm jack on the bottom? Meaning iPod Touch will most likely get quite alot of attention in this event. IMHO.

Features i think it'll have: Compass, Oleophobic layer, hopefully redesigned case similar to the 3GS. (I hate the stainless steel.) New iPod/iPhone OS would be neat. Definitely the camera, since Apple wants to implement Augmented Reality, and the iPod would benefit from it. REALLY WISH it'd have GPS! but i'm not holding my breath.

iTunes 9 (Or maybe Apple will jump the gun and give us iTunes X lol) has to be released... Snow Leopard is here, and it only makes sense. Blu-ray is a cool feature, but honestly its not really practical to have bluray 1080p on a 13" display...much less a 15". The iMac and the 17" MBP would be the only ones to benefit from the full HD. Facebook integration is really kinda useless, besides for Apple marketing. It doesn't serve any useful purpose for us.

Definitely no tablet... so yea..

The nano is cool enough to have a camera, but i doubt it'll have wifi...

What'd be really cool is if they made the iPod classic into a touch device with a HDD. haha 160GB iPod Touch! lol for all you music hoarders who honestly dont spend $60,000 on music. :p DOubt it'd happen but its something Apple might to just because the App Store would see another increase in sales from another device.

The Cocktail thing is a cool idea... if they bundle good apps, not farting ones or useless ones. Apple should go thru the app store and reject all those really useless apps that have no purpose. Possibly revamp the store so that its more organized and easier to find worthwhile apps.

The Quicktime X is going to be a Snow Leopard only app i believe. Honestly it'd just look ugly in Windows.

...mmmh...
nothing about laptops, I guess?
Although, a minimum hope for an upgrade to the MBA...

They JUST updated the MBA's. Apple never updated any of their Mac line within 3 month period. Forget it.

Actually I'd love facebook integration on iTunes. Sharing playlists with facebook friends etc, it's a brilliant idea to promote more sales.

Yeah!!!! Finally the new iPod Touch G3 comes out!!! :))

HD video out, would be really cool. I hope that Apple thought on this feature!

Radio and OLED along with GPS probably won't be seen this year

HD Radio wouldn't be that hard as most places the music is streamed as AAC plus they could use Radio Towers for triangulation of position as the digital signal has timing info built in. Aren't some places broadcasting GPS almanac data in the steam as well to do Assisted GPS.

Not to mention that HD radio will allow you to buy songs that have just played so Apple want to be right there with this one and get the transaction to occur via iTunes one way or the other.

Next year would be to late.

Beatles coincidence??

haha, I guess they thought people would be looking for a Beatles theme. They went with the better band!

(love them both really)

Recent quote from The Times:

"a remastered version of the Beatles’ entire back catalogue due to be released on September 9."

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure why so many people insist/hope/want (whatever) Steve Jobs to come back at one of these events.

I'll admit here, that I did not take the time to read all 13 pages. I made it through a few, and that was enough for me.

I would love SJ back and involved as much as anyone else. For whatever his downfalls may be, I completely respect what he's done and the products that he is responsible for. With that said, look at the truth. The guy has to retire sometime. How long has the talk about 'what will Apple be like' without SJ argument/discussion been going on? Well, look at it now. He took a hiatus, and the stock is now at nearly $170 without him being the visible front of the company. Even if he's back and has assumed the same role he was working before his break, wouldn't it make since to take him out of the public vision right now despite what his future plans may or may not be?

Personally, I wouldn't mind it if SJ is done with his events. The company has to move on at some point. It seems like it's already on a good roll and I'd like to see that stick as we go forward. Just not sure what some people are thinking.

are you an investor? it seems that only investors try to get people on the "apple is more than Steve Jobs" band wagon.

apple is Steve Jobs. the future is uncertain without him. just look at the past. how can one say that apple will be fine without him. their wrong, just like the board was wrong to push him out the first time. wish it wasn't true but I really think it is.

I think that's just bollocks. Just because the first time Jobs was out Apple went down doesn't mean it was only about him. Jobs next big thing was Nextstep which didn't actually make a lot of money either and was forced to quit the hardware business later on.

I'm not an investor and a Jobs fan, but I'm pretty sure Apple will do just fine without him from now on. You do realize that neither iPod nor Clickwheel interface were Jobs' ideas?

Ok heres what I think will go down, I could possibly be very wrong.

Reversing back to the 50's Diner where the ad was filmed. What is retro, still can be related today and found popularly in a 50's diner? This:

I believe that this cocktail project is actually some widespread UI project that we will see implemented in iTunes, the iPod/iPhone lines AND an apple tablet (face it, there's just too many rumors to deny its existance).
This Jukebox interface will have a cocktail of information, all about the album, with original booklets like found when you buy a physical copy of the album.

We will see iTunes 9. This will appear because of this new jukebox/cocktail UI, with a fresh new look for the whole thing. I think we will see SOME social networking intergrated into it (twitter first, followed by facebook, myspace, digg, ect later).

Per usual, we will have new iPods. The clickwheel line will see a new User Interface, a simpler version of the cocktail/jukebox UI previously mentioned. The clickwheel iPods will NOT get camera's, at least not this time around. The classic will get a HDD bump to some ridiculous size 3 people actually need, while the nano has two ways of going. They will either go to a black/silver approach like the classic, or they'll have a minor design change, 32gb models and introduce some new colours ^_^

The iPod touch will see a re-work. It will get a processer/ram bump just like the 3GS. The storage sizes will stay the same, with a drop of 10-20 us$ depending on how generous Apple are feeling. It will get a camera, oleophobic screen and perhaps a newly shaped back. It will get a major change in the software I believe, Reworking the actual iPod app. We will see a cocktail/jukebox makeover of the UI, making it a lot prettier. It will be a free update to all current iPod touch owners.

The iPhone will just get an update to the Ipod app, bringing it up to par with the iPod touch.

Last but not least, we WILL see a tablet. This tablet will be released at the end of the year for the holiday season, and It's main feature will be an amazing cocktail/jukebox interface, making this the ultimate entertainment device. It will be able to handle 720p video. It will use an atom processor from intel, so 1.6ghz will give it some real juice.
We wont see a full OSX tablet at first, that will come if the tablet is a widespread success.

Please dont tear this post apart, just my predictions :p
