Nobody even remotely suggested that. A project of this caliber had to be planned years ago, and Apple has probably been building their own Maps for at least a year. I'm surprised Apple released something that wasn't at least 99% ready to be deployed to the public. Apple Maps is an utter failue.

Absolutely. Nobody argues that it takes time to build this out. The point is, Apple knew that, cut Google, and plastered this Maps client.

It takes time, yes! But a 6 year-old, mature platform, with a crappy Maps app in its infancy? You are right on.

Thank god

Which god, personally the map good is out to lunch right now so we better pray to the coding code because they are going to need it. overall I like the map and what I see and love how they did it on the ipad wifi only still works even without GPS so good job Apple and keep it coming there are always growing up pains in projects like this.

I keep posting about this because it just baffles my mind today. It's relevant to maps. I got called an "irrational Apple fan boy" today by my cousin for liking iOS 6. He told me he can't talk to me about Apple stuff anymore. This happened mainly because he hates the new Apple Maps App, which I agreed with but also said I like iOS 6 despite preferring the old Google Maps App. That's being an "irrational Apple fanboy"?

Saying the word "Apple" makes you an irrational Apple fanboy to those types. Just ignore them.

Can they please just make the Logo correct?
You can't turn off a street and take a left to float onto a highway.

PLEASE!

"Lockdown" is funny. As others have mentioned, the problem is not with the software itself, but the data... It will be fine in the long run, but there is no quick fix.

I wouldn't depend on the Apple's Maps improving much just because there are a lot of people using it. Yes, its supposed to collect statistics for stuff like traffic, but it has no way of fixing street names, correcting errors or adding business unless users do it manually. How many people are going to do that? How many people even know how to do that?

A desktop counterpart to Apple's Map's should have been released at the same time also. I feel like people would be more willing to make corrections on things while at home rather than on a mobile device while they're in the middle of getting to their destination. Apple's maps existing only on iOS devices is a big disadvantaged, it needs a web-based counterpart.

Really, this is new territory for Apple, they haven't offered any services that require the amount of data collection that goes into a projected like this. Google Maps are the best because they are the best a data mining.

Actually, I'd say about 90% of the people here are upset.

Read the reactions to a prospective Google Maps app here. Or an entire Tumblr devoted to "the amazing iOS 6 maps" here. Or this. Or this. Or this.

I agree that the majority are upset, maybe 95%. But they'll still be camping out to buy the new iPhone regardless.

I'm so surprised that Apple allowed the Maps application to go live. It's almost as like we are all beta testers for them. I hope they get google maps back up and running soon.

It is a bit odd that they would keep calling Siri "beta", and not label the new maps... obviously even more of a work in progress... the same way.

In any case, I'm so glad not to be the manager of their test group right now.

That sucks for the maps team. Hopefully they won't need to be in lockdown too long. I bet they saw this coming though. I'd say the maps team probably knew it wasn't going to be totally ready on time.

On the bright side, on day 1 I found a great transit app for Toronto (about 50 cities worldwide in total) called TransitTimes+. It's $2.99 Canadian. And it's awesome. Google Maps never had real time transit info anyway, at least not here. So this solution, while having limited rollout at first, is better in the long run.

I wonder what "lockdown" entails. Is it like what they had to do back in the 80's? Something like "90 hours a week and loving it.":eek:

Hmm,

I don't recall Google having turn-by-turn navigation. No thanks. I'll stick with you Apple. I have faith.

The main issue for me seems to be the fact that Apple's maps seemed cobbled together piecemeal from whatever. Like a nine-year-olds computer science project.

The Fact that Brighton in the UK only show the A Roads is a big problem!

I am sure this will only get better. But it is rubbish at the moment.

However I think the biggest thing I am going to miss is Streetview!! Pretty handy when I am trying to find a clients office etc.

iOS 6 is out publicly for one day and everyone is complaining about the maps already, like they really used it already.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying but it seems to me the easy fix would be to redistribute the Google map app until Apple gets their's working acceptably.

Or *horrors* let them battle it out head to head for awhile and let the best map win.

Apple prefers to decide what is best for you without competition.
