Hmmm, overall good news. I have a 2016 MBP with touch bar, and the keyboard has been, umm, very frustrating.

I have to assume the new keyboard is as much better as Apple could make it, but I don't know how to figure out whether I can trust it.

Patience. We will need to wait for the next round of beta-testers and repair sites to tear apart the new keyboards.

I was hoping they would bump the physical resolution up to something a little more ‘modern’.

I used the ‘Looks like 1920x1080’ psuedo-resolution (i.e. 3840x2160 frame buffer scaled down to the physical 2880x1880 pixels on the display) and I’d ideally like a 1:1 pixel mapping to stop text and images from being blurry.

But no, I guess not. Not this year, again.

The 2012-esque 2880x1800 resolution isn’t acceptable in 2018.

It’s a bit of a joke, really.

Oh well.

Ca$h saved.

I don't think you followed the conversation. 32GB is not available on the 13" and people are upset.

You might as well ask for there to be 32GB of RAM on your phone. I'm going to venture that anyone who is demanding 32GB on their 13" laptop has absolutely no clue about their computing needs, or about what this would imply for heating issues and battery life.

I'm excited though, next step is getting these 15" MBPs with LPDDR4 and an NVIDIA GPU and I'm set to upgrade my 2014 model.

Indeed, it is time for me to sleep I gather..! Yes, 32GB on 13" is really nuts at the moment. But, I fancy people may use an external GPU and a monitor to make it a powerhouse at home, and then, 32GB may make some sense? You have the best of both worlds?

This lineup looks pretty darn good. I give Apple some credit. The only thing I disagree with is that they should get rid of the stupid touch bar but keep the Touch ID power button. That said, I can work around using keyboard shortcuts. Only issue is that I use the vi editor and the ESC key is still a little annoying.

Just took the plunge on a 2.9GHz i9, 32GB DDR4, 1 TB SSD model.

Variable refresh rate display will not happen. IT's a battery killer. That's why most laptops dont' have this technology. My understanding is that G-SYnc and Free-Sync does not support optimus-like technologies.

Last time on the Nvidia/AMD talk. NAME ME the Nvidia variant GPU that has 35W TDP. Than we can talk.

For people who care about graphics performance, battery life is a much lower issue. Use the integrated graphics for general use and when disconnected, but when I plug in and fire up something that needs it - I want cutting edge graphics performance.

What the clueless people don't get is the BASE PRICE IS THE SAME AS 2017.

Most likely because creatives have started to complain loudly (read youtube influencers, journalists on tech websites) that apple is behind on the chip game. Can't wait any longer.

No. It was already in the works. Just that they didn't just slap new processors in it. New improvements at no extra cost.

Switching from integrated to discrete requires a reboot everytime. And I disagree. People do care about battery life. Also, let's be honest. the only people who care about variable refresh rate are gamers and apple does not care about gamers.

At least they haven't gone to FaceID and killed TouchID. Neither is really secure enough for a laptop, but FaceID only would be a joke.

Ordinarily I would think this is a pretty good upgrade. And $400 to bump it to 32GB RAM is pretty cheap considering what they usually charge for RAM. But it still has the butterfly keyboard, so no sale. I want nothing to do with it.

Yikes $4k for 32gb RAM and 1TB SSD and that is with the educational discount. The keyboard is the unknown quantity here.

May the keyboard be more than just quieter (i.e. fixed).

One thing that bothered me in the the educational discount for the MBPs was the language for the AC discount (for a limited time only get 20% off AC).

Glad to see a Mac refresh during Back to School.

May everyone who buys this or the 13” have no trouble with the keyboard or anything else.

Waiting on the desktops.

Sounds like you’re never buying a Mac again. Butterfly is here to stay (which isn’t to say the issues with gen 1/2 aren’t resolved) until the next major chassis overhaul.

actually, i read it incorrectly, my fault. You were referring to my TDP comment. TDP is as much about heat as it is about power. Apple can not actually fit a higher TDP component into the current chassis. People already complain about throttling. What you are asking for is APple to redesign the entire chassis just to add a more powerful graphics chip. A component Apple has never competed in and seems to be doing fine.

Gotcha - editing my response to your response :).

Yeah, thermal is probably a problem. Again the drive towards 'thin' to the exclusion of all else cripples performance.

Price is still way too high for the specs.

$1,800 base price for a laptop with an i5 and integrated graphics is just ridiculous.

$1,800 used to be the price of their base 15" MacBook Pro, but they weaseled themselves into a higher price bracket after they kept the classic and retina models together, and never dropped the price after discontinuing the classic models. They're probably gonna do the same thing with the iPhone X: keep the model priced at $1k, and sell some SE type of phone for $600-700, so if you were originally a 6+ or 7+ owner, now you'll have to spend more to keep up with the premium line of phones.

No, I will keep my 2016 MBP (which needs its keyboard replaced for the SECOND time) until the Mac Pro comes out in 2019 and buy a third-party keyboard. But you're correct in that I will never buy another Mac again that has a butterfly keyboard. They are fundamentally flawed.

True this. I have the 13" TB 2016, and it just got a keyboard replacement under AppleCare in May (before Apple announced replacement program). I like the notebook well enough. I see how the new ones have improved battery that might be the only real thing that makes a small difference of minutes to the user experience, and yes, True Tone, majorly. But apart from that, for what I use it for, it is good.

I would have been upset if I wanted or had enough HEVC 4K HDR content with me. I do not, so it is fine.

Having said that, I am still going to try to see what prices I get for my notebook in the market. Would love to have the new one, in 15" though.
I hear you. The new display is probably really nice too and worth the upgrade but being that I paid $2100 for this machine and just finished paying it off with my Apple Store credit card a few months back, it would be stupid to upgrade now and start over. I plan to hold onto my MBP for 5 years if possible before moving on which I normally don't do but its gotten to the point where I realize I have no need to upgrade a laptop every 2 years or less for what I do with it. Same with my iPhone 8 Plus and iPad Pro 10.5. I'd like to keep them for 3-4 years if they hold up. They are all beautiful pieces of hardware that are capable of standing the test of time.
