Still a thousand usd above a Dell XPS with similar specs

Apple Tax is just insane now... but as they say, it's not expensive, you don't earn enough :(
In this case, all you need is a MacBook or MacBook Air.
My point is that Apple shouldn't be adding the "Pro" label to something that's not Pro.

Absolutely.

I think a lot of people mad at the MBP really would be fine with an updated MBA with a retina screen etc hitting $999.

It’s not their fault really - it’s just that Apple have left so many holes in their lineup that it pushes people to (usually more expensive) machines that are overkill for their needs.

I've thought about that. Not of fan of the eBay route but I have done refurb from Apple in the past and have been extremely happy with them. I'll probably re-evaluate around Christmas which hopefully will give enough time for folks to see if the 3rd gen keyboard really is up to par.

Maybe Craigslist? As long as it’s sealed, everything should be ok. Apple will honor the warranty. It starts the second it’s activated.

I don't think it's that significant though. The fastest 2017 MBP geekbenches 15551 and the fastest 2017 iMac geekbenches 19328. This new MBP is likely to beat that score handily.

The other possibility is that maybe Apple is going to start cutting back on the performance of the iMac line entirely in favor of the iMac Pro. Perhaps the iMac will be slightly slower than the MacBook Pro from now on. That would be quite unfortunate. The rationale is that the Pro machines are always the fastest.

I don’t think so. One is mainstream and the other is a professional workstation. I’m sure both versions will continue to be sold for some time to come.

Would you care to elaborate on that?

Congress determined that ZTE is a national security threat since the Chinese government has influence over the company. They were banned from selling their products in the U.S. but Trump overturned that because the Chinese provided him with $500m for a Trump project and also hooked up Ivanka with some patents which are extremely difficult to get in China.

Haha, foolish me thinking we'd get a base nTB 13" quad core 16/256 for around $1299.

Anyone know which Beats headphones would be the best to get with my edu discount to resell in an attempt to recoup a chunk of the ~$2000 I'm going to have to fork out for my new laptop?

Or just buy the new eGPU for use with a refurbished 2017 model. You don't get the speed bump, but you're also not paying $3700 for a new machine either.

Funny, but I just advised my friend who picked up a 2017 refurbished to return it and get the new computers. She got her's on Friday so she has plenty of time left in her 14-day trial period. But she wants a portable machine and wouldn't want the external GPU in most cases.

I'm thinking about going 13" and getting an eGPU to leave on my desk.

WHAT A JOKE!! JUST 256GB SSD?!

List of professional laptop starting storage:
Surface Book - 256GB SSD
Dell XPS 15 - 1TB HD! or 256GB SSD
Razer 15 - 256GB SSD
Thinkpad Carbon - 256GB SSD

I'm laughing really hard right now.

Ha. There are so many jokes out there!

Seriously, there are many people who's workflow includes cloud based storage. In fact, pretty much all professionals should use cloud based storage. I don't know why many folks don't realize that.

IMO, if you own a 2015, you are at Peak Laptop. I replaced my 2013 with a 2017, and regretted it immensely. The 2017 was sold at a big loss.

Marco Arment was right: the MBP 2015 was the best laptop ever Apple made. Take pride in owning yours.
2015 the best? That was quite debatable until today. But no more; for anyone who can needs the cores and whose time is money, any MBP except the 2018 15” is obsolete.

Certainly anyone who uses Xcode will be much better off with the new hexacores. Xcode loves cores, and if you’re a developer and get paid for it, the new machine will pay for itself very quickly.

In previous generations of MBP, they made such a big deal about the Mag Safe power connector. Then they just do away with it, in favor of all USB-C ports. Why not include a "mag-safe adaptor"? I've almost yanked my overpriced machine off the desk a couple of times.

I'm convinced they will bring it back when they next update the design. Magsafe usb-c. It's doable, they just aren't doing it at the moment and the third party options have proven less than stellar.

$400 to make the base model get 32GB of RAM, that is now around $2800 for a 15". Ouch.

Apple's ram pricing and SSD pricing upgrades are disgraceful.

They're charging $400 for 16GB of ram, when you can get 16GB of ram for $100. ...and two 16GB sticks (for 32GBs) For $180.

Technically, the 16GB ram upgrade should be $100 (considering they get their ram wholesale).

A 512GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD is $195.
A 1TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe is $395.

Apple is charging $400 to upgrade from the 512GB to the 1TB NVMe, but without subtracting the price of the 512GB SSD in their laptops. going from $512GB to 1TB should be a $200 upgrade, not $400. Again, they're getting their components at wholesale pricing.

The 2TB SSD is $1,200.

Samsung's 970 EVO NVMe is $795. So you shouldn't be paying much more than $595 to upgrade from the 512GB to the 2TB drive.

This is one of the HUGE reasons why I no longer like Apple. They've been doing this forever, and I'm done with it.

while i do agree, people do get the benefit of charging from any port which I've taken advantage of many times

Actually, I believe anything MORE than 256 GB is a joke and unnecessary.
Any real work should be done on external hard drives or the cloud.

Then again (and no sarcasm here), maybe I'm wrong - what could the reason be for a larger internal drive on a Macbook? Maybe I don't know.

But for anyone doing photo or video work, the real work has to be done offline to be more efficient workflow wise.

where are you finding prices for LPDDR3 Ram?

but yea apple charges you a lot for upgrades. Apple has done this for eons.

That has to be one of the worst defenses I've ever heard. Many people don't use external hard drives or the cloud. I surely don't rely on those when I'm working. I usually back up every once in a while, but it's never my sole storage source. Extra storage is never a bad thing. For some users a laptop is their only Machine. People store music, photos, movies, documents, etc... So yes, it's not a joke. Thanks.

Too bad on the nTB--its the only one I would consider. I have used the 2017 15" MBP at work for the last year and will not be getting another MBP. I have carpel tunnel and while it was manageable and under control previously, since using the new keyboard, it has been getting worse--those keyboards are terrible for ergonomics. And the tard-bar just gets in the way--if my hand drifts or slips, I end up blacking out the screen, or activating iTunes or Siri. It just gets in the way and slows me down.

At home, I got a 2015 13" MBP in 2016 when the rumors about no MagSafe, no ports, etc. came out--and I am very glad I did. I will likely replace it with a Thinkpad X1 Carbon and run Linux on it--or maybe a Mac Mini (should it be worth it)--whenever my MBP dies.

Yup. 256GB is perfect for the OS and Applications - I prefer to keep my system drives lean and clean. ...I do all of my work on non-boot drives.

That said, the 256GB 15" MacBook Pro option with the 2.9GHz CPU, a 4GB Radeon RX 560 GPU, and 32GB of ram is still $3,300. Oh hells-bells, that's overpriced.

The interesting thing about this update is that the MBP is now truly for professionals.

Maybe for some people. Not for me. It still has that aggravating touch bar nonsense that removes the physical escape key and function keys, it still has a crappy keyboard with one of the most mentally deficient arrow key layouts I've ever experienced, and it is still missing all the ports I *actually need*.

So, nope, it is not "truly" for professionals.
