I ordered a Space Grey 15-inch MacBook Pro with 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage the moment I found out about the new release. I'm looking forward to seeing the performance of the 6-core processor and 32GB of memory. This will replace my mid-2015 MacBook Pro which was the top of the line model for mid-2015.

Id be curious to know how many people that bitch and moan about the updates, ever use anywhere near the full potential of their current laptops or will of the new ones... I am going to go out on a limb here and say that probably most don't.

I will say though that the prices are steep but that is not news, and with non pro models, they really don't need to lower the prices, if you want a mac you get a mac, if you don't you don't is what it usually seems to be. Which is why so many people buy them to browse the web and write papers on, they will never use all the power but they want a mac, which is also fine :)

If people are bitching and moaning, then it stands to reason that they do use the full power of their machines. If they're just surfing the web and doing some light Microsoft Word style work, then they aren't pro users in the context of this discussion and probably shouldn't be so surprised that they don't understand what everyone is complaining about.

As with any product release, there’ll be some things to love and other things to lament, but on the whole, I’m happy Apple has shown itself as committed to the Mac even if it’s not everything everyone hoped for.

Personally, I’m holding out for the Mac Pro and new Apple Cinema Display.

CAD means Canadian Dollar.

I brought final cut to it's very limits with a 30 min movie, which is not remotely close to a feature film. It was mainly due to audio tracks. It was a top specced 15" 2017 MBP. So yeah, its' not that hard, especially for a professional who actually does even more complex stuff then I did. As I wrote in another thread, I sold the machine. Funnily enough this was one of the minor issues, but at least that one got addressed.

Maybe for some people. Not for me. It still has that aggravating touch bar nonsense that removes the physical escape key and function keys, it still has a crappy keyboard with one of the most mentally deficient arrow key layouts I've ever experienced, and it is still missing all the ports I *actually need*.

So, nope, it is not "truly" for professionals.

Fair enough!

I should’ve said ‘creative professionals’ - I think theyre the main target market for the MBP.

Btw I have a 2017 13 NTB and wouldn’t want to buy a TB version, for the reasons you said!

Nice upgrade to the latest Intel Chips. I wonder why the non-TB models didn't get the same upgrade when it's the same body shell? Also, glad to see the 2015 killed off!

That's nice. I'm not a power laptop/computer user and with so much you can do on a smartphone the days of me spending $2+k on a laptop are a thing of the past. Apple really needs an entry level laptop for casual users that just want a really nice screen and lower processing specs.
It's called the MacBook.

You know the one without Pro on it.
And the 13” MBP can be had at the same price, $1,299.

All interesting complains, but.... do all those inexpensive PCs run MacOS? So maybe $2300 doesn't sound too bad. You see, my wife used to complain about Macs using the same logic, they are overpriced hardware... until she started paying attention to my experience versus her experience with a PC. She now has a Mac too. Are Macs perfect? No, they aren't, but then nothing is perfect. Yet they are from my experience way more stable and reliable than any PC I ever had.

Lies about "upping". It was also $1799 in 2017. Same price, but more to offer.
I don't know about the US, but they definitely upped the pricing here in Europe. It's ridiculous.

Entry MBP 13 costs 2K EUR for the base model :D and entry MBP 15 starts at 2799 EUR. A maxed out 15 costs 8K EUR :D :D

Every year, you get more for the same price of virtually any product. Sorry, but that's a weak argument.

People like this are exactly the problem. As long as they are willing to pay premium prices for subpar configurations, Apple's going to charge 4K for the 13'' in two years to come.

So gutted the non-Touchbar models didn't get an update. But then, I guess Apple will want to slowly phase those. Probably by not updating them for, say 5 years?
I don’t think Intel will take 5 years to deliver the 8th generation 15W quad cores Apple needs before they can update the 13” nTB. They should be available sometime next year.

It certainly looks like Apple is out to appease the masses. We're seeing a couple of things here we haven't really ever seen.
  • The 13" MBP with a quad core
  • 32GB of RAM

That said, pricing has certainly gone up a lot since the mid-2012s and we haven't seen a corresponding increase in value.
