Because sales numbers say otherwise.

I see. So the sales of a multi billion $$ corporation sway your empathy for your fellow everyday folks who wish they could have the latest tech at the size they prefer.

Think that over sometime if you ever take time to evaluate your place in this world.

This may be a small part of Apple's numbers, but it actually still has relevance and potential. My kids are not old enough to have a $700+ iPhone, but very much use their iPod Touch for virtually everything else.

I'm a little surprised Apple hasn't marketed the iPod touch for specifically that use. iPod touch when you are 10 years old, iPhone when you are ...that's a whole other debate.

They did. Steve Jobs said iPod is training wheels for an iPhone

An A8 in an iPod Touch?!? Just bought a blue 32GB, main use: VR HMDs, like the CMOAR

And an A8 in an iPod Touch bodes well for iPad Mini 4, too!

And why in the name of Satan does the iPod Nano have a cool thing like a built-in radio
and the iPod Touch have the useful built-in WEATHER & STOCKS apps, but not iPad?!?

Haha! Apple releases a teaser for July 14th, then unviels the new iPods a day later. Really clever and funny, actually. They must've been laughing it up in Cupertino.

RAM will be 1GB, or even castrated to 512MB.
It definitely won't be upgraded to 2GB.
My bet will be 1GB. They will not cut it down to 512MB anymore as 512MB devices struggles in iOS 8. Probably 2GB is only A8X exclusive for now.

It does 120fps slo-mo rather than the iPhones 6 240 so yes its the iPad air 2/iPhone 5S camera. Still this is a very very powerful update for a great price. Im tempted...just because!
Hmm. The iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5s actually use different cameras with the iPhone 5s' being better with bigger pixels. I guess we'll wait for the teardowns for details.

I am so torn...

On the one side, my 160GB iPod Classic went kaput recently. I have about 115GB so the 128GB iPod Touch would be perfect. My 64GB iPhone 5s barely has any music stored locally and is already almost full, so storing music there is not an option.

On the other hand, T-Mobile now has unlimited LTE in Mexico (which I visit several times a week, and a big reason for me wanting to have locally stored music). It should be a short matter of time, I hope, until they add Apple Music to their list of music streaming services that do my incur data usage towards your bill, making streaming a viable option. I would still have to deal with the buggy Music.app interface (which will be fixed very slowly because it's tied with iOS updates), poor audio quality (compared to both my MP3 files and Spotify Premium), and monthly costs.

Decisions!

4 inch screen for 199? LOL. The reason the iPod business is dying isn't because people don't want them. It's because they don't want to be screwed when they do buy one. But there goes Apple again attempting to gouge everyone for every penny.

Why not Touch ID & GPS? Sadly!

In the case of GPS, it's the same reason there's no GPS on WiFi iPads: Cost.

GPS is provided by the Broadcomm baseband processor on iPhones - the same chip that provides Cellular service. It's probably the single most expensive part on an iPhone, and if you added it to the iPod you'd pretty much have an iPhone.

Touch ID? Pretty much the same reason. The parts are expensive, and Apple wants to retain differentiation between iPod and iPhone.

Quite an impressive update for a product nobody actually cares about.

no,

thousands of developers are rejoicing that they can continue to keep their current price for their app licensing

instead of bringing it down or negotiating prices with companies/customers because of they discontinued the iPod

when you buy 20-50 devices, that $500 difference (between iPhone + iPod) makes a pretty huge difference.

and thats not including a bluetooth scanner or a lineapro barcode sleeve and the app licensing fee.

Yeah, people do care, and Apple is keeping this product alive if not for the consumer sales then for business sales. They want iOS to be what Windows is to the business industry, own 99% of the market.

Are you serious? ALL they did was add new colors to the Nano and call it “NEW?” And it's STILL $149 according to Apple's site.

Not kidding - it's there and starting at $199 for the 16GB model.

Yeah, the iPad Air 2 camera is slightly better than the iPhone 5 but not the 5S. Guess time will tell!

I guess when iPhone 6S is announced later this year they will also announce bigger screened iPods

The iPod is there for cheaper solutions for Businesses.

$200 instead of $700 is a no brainer for any decision maker.

Unless you're some kind of traveling sales rep that goes to places and customer sites with has no wi-fi (????? in 2015?) in a rare case, then you would need an iPhone or a cellular iPad

but besides that most of the time you just need Wi-Fi connection, there is absolutely no reason for you to waste money to get an iPhone.

The new A8 iPod Touch will be great for game emulators! It should slot nicely into my Logitech Powershell and be great for running emulators like PSPPSS.

I currently have an iPhone 5c in there, but the A5 A6 doesn't quite have enough oomph to emulate, say, PSP games at full speed. The A8, on the other hand, should have plenty!
