For me, I imagine I'll get an updated iPod touch sometime because everything about it is considerably better than my iPhone at a crazy low price.

noted and i get what you're saying; spec wise maybe it's considerably better than your iphone, but the ipods have one missing difference :) - the ability to take phone calls... so don't you think cost wise, it's better to get a newer phone (assuming you don't have the latest/greatest yet). :)

Maybe it's a precursor to a new reasonably sized iPhone so I can replace my iPhone 5 with a new iPhone that isn't the size of a small country. Are there really that few people that don't want to carry around a phablet for my day to day work?
personally I do enjoy larger screens I would say a majority of people I know are with you on this. You may have a point, there are striking similarities between this and a potential iPhone 6c. Fingers crossed.

But the physical size difference isn't that great.

In your opinion. Look, I've used the six extensively and switched back to the 5s.

The 4" iPhones were the limit that my hand could use single handedly. That is important to me. Why defend a corporation removing options that a lot of people prefer?

If Apple would charge the same upgrade prices for the iPhone as they're doing for the iPod touch, that'd be great.

Wait, no TouchID? Seriously? C'mon.

Just ordered my new (PRODUCT)RED 64 GB iPod touch. :D

Having it shipped to a friend's house that lives near the trip I'm taking. :D Hopefully it's here before the trip is too far underway!

I agree with you. Not on my own preferences, but you don't go 5 years saying "this is the perfect size"

then suddenly "that size is crap and we're not making it anymore"

they should have kept a 4" and a 4.7" on 6 launch and then added a 5.5" for the 6s, while keeping a 4". it just made Apple look like they were chasing instead of sticking true to some of their own ideals.

there's no "perfect one size fits all" for phones. having choices is great. but Apple keeps putting their foot in their mouths with these bold claims about "perfect" sizes for things, only to a few years later, release something of new size which they attacked before

I know the antenna breaks were mentioned somewhere in this thread, but if you look closely at the silhouettes they use for the iPod Touch and iPhone, it seems as though the iPod Touch was supposed to come out with TouchID lol...

iPad has cellular but isn't a large iPhone.

Just wanted 4G data built in. Hell 3G would have done.
How do you justify selling a 4" 16 GB iPhone 5s (with an A7 to boot) for $550 vs selling a 4" 16 GB iPod touch 6th-gen 4G (with an A8) for $330?

You cannot justify it and thus you don't offer it. Most people need/want a phone (ie, want to be able to make and receive calls & texts) when they are away from home or the office (ie, away from WiFi); most people probably want other communication methods like internet-based messaging services as well. And they want that phone to either fit into a pants pocket or to be able to hold it with one hand when making a call. And most people having owned an iPhone want an iOS device as their next phone. That is what you call a captive audience. That is why they can add an extra $200 of margin to hand-holdable cellular devices.

I'm surprised by the A8 chip. I was expecting an A7. Pretty impressive for a $199 device (keep in mind even the latest iPad mini doesn't have an A8).

You know what's good about this? Apple shows it's possible to put advanced hardware (same chip and storage options as the iPhone 6) inside a super-small body (4" screen, thinner than an iPhone 6). I wouldn't be surprised if Apple comes up with a 4" iPhone that doesn't suck now.
I thought the same thing, A7 chip...I was wrong, so maybe I'm wrong about this fall's iPhone lineup...Perhaps there will be an iPhone 6c after all...6c/6/6+/6s/6s+ (hopefully new naming structure, the numbers do not make sense, only the 4 was the 4th iPhone & iOS 4), drop all the 5's, take the 5s screen, cam, TouchID, the 5c form factor, put A8, M8, NFC in there, maybe that will be the entry level iPhone with Apple Pay? I can't see Apple keeping iPhones without Apple Pay, one way or another all iPhones will have Apple Pay capability by end of year IMO. (All merchants need to offer NFC & chip payment options by end of year in the US by law.)

I really like how the home button now matches the casing.
Forgive me if I'm being thick but I don't see the difference? What's different about the home buttons below? If you meant the lock buttons (which do match the casing), they matched the colours in the last gen also.

I was hoping that they would do something special like extending FaceTime Audio to be able to call any phone number. This would have made the touch a viable cheap phone with the only limitation being that you had to be on wifi (which at least in the US is pretty much all the time). As it is, this is totally underwhelming and will continue to decline in sales IMO.
I agree iPod sales will continue to decline with or without this update. But as much as I would love to see extended FaceTime Audio, I think they will most likely continue the "c" line of iPhones as a cheaper alternative.

Because sales numbers say otherwise.
