Can you use the $199 off towards purchasing a $299 ipod touch? Or do they only let you get certain products?

You pretty much get a credit for $199. So if you choose to get an iPod Classic ($249) or a 32,64 gb iPod touch ($299, $399), all you have to do is pay the difference.

And to those people that were sad that the iPad wasn't included in this promotion, that's because Apple does this every year to clear unwanted inventory to make room for the next generation of iPods. Currently, the only inventory problems Apple has with the iPad is that they can't keep them on the shelf long enough (or manufacture them fast enough).

Nothing in the UK? Hopefully, they are waiting for iPad to start shipping (May 28th) to release the same promo later on...

Only if you remembered to plug it in. Heck, my phone lasts a long time and I've had times when I got to work without the charger and found out that it had 5% charge left.

You haven't convinced me. I'd still rather have the paper book with me.

I think it depends how much paper you carry. In my case as a grad student, I would much rather have an e-version vs. toting seven books at one time. :)

You can, in fact, choose any iPod. It seems they are just heavily pushing the 8GB iPod touch as the default. After you pick out your mac (going through the promotion page), this is what you see:

And, to answer people's questions. They start the promotion at this time, and run it all summer. This way they get all the kids who are graduating high school as they pick out their first laptop for college, as well as the graduating seniors from college whose laptops are now 4 years old. It's good for Apple because they put a lot of iPod touches in young, trend-setting kids' hands, while also emptying out their supplies of iPods before updating them in September.

apple does these things every year, not a big surprise. and you have to be crazy to buy anything apple this close to WWDC

It's pretty safe that there won't be anything at WWDC in terms of updates to the Macbook or Macbook Pro line as they were all just updated so this would be a good time. It doesn't matter anyway, it's not like the promo ends before WWDC in order to con people into buying into the promotion.

I was thinking of buying a 15" Macbook pro. This makes it pretty tempting, but then again it's also tempting to wait and see what Apple has in store for the next generation of iPod Touches.

You have 7 classes in a day ? Back in my college years, it was 2 or 3 classes per day max, not all required huge books, and I could easily leave the unneeded books in my car.

Man, get a better schedule.

I just ordered a 13 in MBP with my education discount last week online and received it Thursday. Is there anyway I am still eligible to get a free iPod Touch? I would have waited 4 days to get a free iPod if I would have known!

if new ipod touch's are announced/released at the WWDC event on June 7th, will this promotional change? do you think it is only for the current generation (pre WWDC) ipod touch?

Why is the Mac mini not eligible? I know at least last year it wasn't, either, but still...sad face.

You would expect to get $199 off an iPod for a $599 computer purchase? Really?

Just like every other year....that's why it's called Back To School, and only for students :p

It's not just for students. Faculty and staff are eligible, as well as school board members and PTA executives of K-12 schools.

the promotion is tied with particular macs and to particular iPods...

also chance of new iPod touch zero, i think september is the time frame as usual.

Don't know about him, but several classes I've taken required three books. Friggin' engineering...

No big surprise. If you didn't know it was coming you need to read this site a little more. It only includes the models of iPods listed. New iPods released are not part of the promotion. New Macs released are part of the promotion.

strongly agreed. not only wwdc, apple has had this free ipod promotion each june for the past 5 or 6 years...

Apple usually has a policy to allow you to go in within the return period and receive any newly added promotion. If not, just return it and go back the next day and buy another one. But in my experience, even when they released newer models in the near future after I purchased a MacBook, I was able to swap it for the better model for the same price with no hassle.

Umm..... ok .....

I've had times I forgot one of my paperback books too, so then I couldn't read it when I wanted to. What's your point?
