Am I right in thinking this hasn't been launched in the UK yet? Every time I go to me.com I end up with the features page. Even clicking the free trial link on the MobileMe login page takes me back to the features page.

Or am I being *really* stupid?

me.com is redirecting there at the moment as the service is down. It was up briefly earlier today, and *seemed* to have launched in the UK. Keep trying - I suspect it'll be up later tonight.

Two more thoughts:

What a lousy experience pre iPhone launch - and as stated - not much room for error.

Also - Apple has billions of $$$ available and can easily afford to purchase a server farm, staff it, and run it to Steve's high expectations.

If Apple is going to be in this sector they need to make the investment in hardware & staff and do it right.

We are in the era of high definition - the demands on servers and bandwidth are only going to grow - let's go Apple.

Fyi

if you goto to the mobileme support page you can chat with an apple rep. They told me the release date for mobileme has always been July 11... which is contradictory to what they had been releasing if im not mistaken

You aren't making any sense. Under your scenario, Apple would be offering everyone the "chance" to go to MobileMe OR to stay as customers of .Mac. That isn't what is happening here - .Mac has been terminated and REPLACED by MobileMe, meaning that I'm PAYING for the new replacement service through my subscription.

For instance, this would be like your subscription to FrenchWh*res Digest being REPLACED with Sk@nkyFrog Monthly Reader.

...I see your point. But man...those ladies over at SkankyFrog...horrible.

One of the Me.com features is being ad free--but I bet if it were running on ad revenue rather than subscriptions they'd get it up a lot faster!

I am very annoyed that I cannot send mail through Mail right now. I am an Apple contractor and was hassled into taking a refresher course with associated quiz which had misinformation littered through it and incorrect answers, and I was requested to send in screen shots to Apple so I can get my score adjusted which I can't even do because of Apple's e-mail system being down.

A paid service shouldn't be unavailable for this long like this.

I used to think that most people on here were unusually hard on Microsoft.
Now I see that you can be relentless on Apple.

In a day or two, or maybe a few more, you'll be talking about 'Remember that day'.

I mean, the Stock Market hasn't crashed. I've been frustrated in the past, but.......

uh.... all my contacts are like wiped from my iphone?

the last thing i did before me.com went down (for the ump-teenth time) was sync my calendar and contacts and all that

Man am I glad I pried myself away and showered and went to work! At this rate, looks like I'll have my iPhone 3G tomorrow with NO PUSH EMAIL!!!

I honestly am not so concerned if it launches late. I am angry that they took down the .mac website without a working replacement.

Big Cloud

Talking about a big cloud, I hope by the time they're done working up there it stops raining here. I think it's fascinating though, it kept me busy all day (this rainy cloudy day).

In my case it's not a BIG problem because i had this day of. But i can imagine it's a real problem for some people and why not let them speak up. At work I depend on the webmail.

By the way to someone who posted something like al the people cursing are macrumor newbies. Well, i'm a macrumors newbie too. That doesn't mean i'm a new mac user nor that my whining is restricted until i posted like a thousand messages.

Nevertheless I hope they get it working soon!

If the outage bothers you that much - move to another service - no one is making you participate

Your comment makes no sense and is plain stupid.

Nelmat was complaining that this thread is boring - so move on.

I have considerable work invested in the iWeb / .Mac hosting that will take considerable time / $$ to host elsewhere (contract fees / site optimization software and learning curve / etc).

That is not even Apple and Oranges for heaven's sake. What are you thinking

I assume--correct me if I'm wrong--that they have to take .mac down in order to undergo the process of putting up MobileMe. In other words, I doubt they can do all of the MobileMe setup while .mac is still running.

You can't just buy great employees - Apple has a lot of money, but their standards are very high. You have to be a very good and very creative engineer to get in. It's the same in places like Google and Microsoft.

If it were an issue of not having the server horsepower, I'm sure they'd run to the stockroom and borrow a few more. They make their own hardware, they probably have ample stock around the Cupertino campus (which is pretty big, by the way). There is some setup time, but I'd like to think a company like Apple has a flexible enough infrastructure to get it done in less than 12 hours.

It's not likely to be a server load issue. Not with the amount of time they've needed. It seems to be a software issue.

Exactly. I had stuff up on my iDisk that I can't get to, and I've needed all day long. I did not think that Apple would screw the pooch like this.

That may be the way Apple decided to do it - but it is not the only way it could be done.

Why not? .mac mail has never stopped working. Web based interface is not working, but if you are trying to "send mail through Mail" then you should have no problem (assuming you are talking about email client program using imap).

Why can't you access your idisk? It has been working all day for me using finder or even from the web at idisk.mac.com/username.

I can access my idisk and mail (send too) just fine from my desktop. (web apps, of course don't work)

Syncing between my iphone and my laptop doesn't seem to be working over the air but that isn't a huge issue right now.

I'm thinking that if you don't like the outage and have an issue with it, then take your business elsewhere.

You said it yourself "If Apple is going to be in this sector they need to make the investment in hardware & staff and do it right" - well at the same time if you're going to be so reliant on a service you should have your backup/contingency plans ready. You have "considerable work" invested - then what are you thinking by not having Plan B?

In that case - why have they been denying customers access to the product they subscribe to by have mac.com down all day.

You should've created a local iDisk on your desktop. I did.

How can you access your iDisk if you can't log in? Perhaps you know another way, but iDisk, Sync, and B2MM all require a login via the preference pane, amd I not correct?
